WHAT’S IN: ACTIVITY 1. How can a person engage with media and information channels in a meaningful
manner?

It is very evident that the present world is gifted with so many media and information channels. People
nowadays are offered great choices in terms of which media and information channel to use. However,
in order to maximize these media and information channels, we must use it in a purposeful way.

 First, in order for us to be able to use in media and information channels, we must know first
our purpose. By knowing our purpose, we are able to direct ourselves to the right media and
information channel and use it in a purposeful manner.
 Second, observe the netiquette. The netiquette will guide us to act appropriately or to become
responsible users of media and information channels. Responsible use of media and information
channels engages always in a purposeful manner.
 Lastly, understanding the different media and information channels. If we are familiar with the
different media and information channels, we can surely use it in a purposeful manner.

WHAT’S NEW: ACTIVITY 2. Media Use Log

Weekly Interaction Log with Information and Information Providers

Media or Information Provider Number of hours in a week

Facebook 7 hours
Instagram 18 hours
YouTube 12 hours
Television 3 hours
G-mail 11 hours

What social media are you mostly hooked to? Why?

- The most social media I am hooked to is Instagram. Instagram is the first social media platform
that I've known ever since I've been a teenager. Instagram is my source of communication to
others and it is also an information provider. Most of the celebrities are active on Instagram as
well that's why I keep updated on my favorite celebrities both local and international. Also, on
Instagram, most of the sources or accounts for information are reliable. Unlike in Facebook, the
community is very toxic and there are lots of fake news.

What's More: Activity 3. Flash News and Visuals

1. Did you believe these news items were true? How did you know they were true or false?

- No, because the news above came from online and there is no link attached for the credits of
sources and information used in the news. Even if it is in the newspaper and posted in public
you can't trust those kinds of news because there is no source or it is not proven. You know that
the news was true if there's significant or concrete evidence on that news and if it comes from a
reliable source.

2. Are all news and information on the internet true? Why or why not?

- Not all information online/internet is true because anybody with access to the world wide web
and people with the ability to post and share information can put up anything online which can
lead to misinformation and disinformation.

3. Who gets to post new items online? Expound.

- Anyone with access to an internet and ability to post something gets to post news items online.
As long as such person has an Internet connection that's good, the person can post news items
online. Some people also have their websites where they post news items, this is also allowed as
long as the person has the funds to pay and maintain the website.

WHAT I HAVE LEARNED: Activity 4. Wrap up!

A. Media Literacy

It is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and create media in a variety of forms. It aims to empower
you by providing the knowledge and skills necessary to engage with both traditional and new
technologies.

B. Information Literacy

communicate information in its various formats.

C. Technology Literacy

responsibly, appropriately, and effectively.

D. Media and Information Literacy

Media and Information Literacy consists of the knowledge, the attitudes, and the sum of the skills
needed to know when and what information is needed; where and how to obtain that information; how
to evaluate it critically and organize it once it is found; and how to use it in an ethical way.

ASSESSMENT: ESSAY WRITING

How do Media Literacy, Information Literacy and Technology Literacy and Media and Information
Literacy differ in terms of use?

Media literacy creates a conscious awareness, the ability to understand, analyze, the messages various
media like the newspapers, the radio, that is for the consumer, and it also promotes how best media
create information for production.

While information literacy and technology literacy differ from other literacy asked in the question above,
as information literacy and technology could be used when describing getting information through
adequate research and further dishing out this available information so as to effectively use the
information with the aim to solve problems, create awareness, or educate, through technologies such as
for example, email.

Lastly, media and information literacy differ in terms of use from the other two explained above, as
media and information literacy describe discerning information credibility, accuracy, and objectivity of
sources they come from, and it shows people how important it is to have credible information to make
informed judgments and the ethical use of the information they consume.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES: ACTIVITY 6. REFLECTION. Does the advent of media and information literacy
helps us to become closer to God, our family and nation? Support your answer.

Media and Information Literacy can improve our relationship with our families, friends, and the Christian
community. It can help spread the Gospel, play worships song, and even strengthen fellowship with
Christians. But for God, it is a different case because:

 And without faith, it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must
believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. - Hebrews 11:6

Developing a personal relationship with God also requires faith and spending time with him. That means
a time for prayer and worship in a quiet place with God.

 But for me it is good to be near God; I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all
your works. - Psalm 73:28

Media and Information Literacy is limited to communicating with humans and is of no use when
communicating with God.
