Adding Vectors End to End

Find the sum of each pair of vectors EXPLANATION AND STEP-BY-STEP

PROCESS BELOW
(magnitude of the resultant vector).

Count the number of blocks covered by two vectors.

x=4y=5

To find the resultant vector's magnitude, use the Pythagorean Theorem.

a2 + b 2 = c2

The resultant is:

x2 + y2 = r2

\
42 + 52 = r2

r =√ 42 + 52

r =6.40
Drawing Vectors

Draw the indicated vector and show the components into which it is resolved.
Calculate (after estimating) all your answers.

Every Sunday, Sandy goes for a morning walk in West of

South at 55 ̊. She walks at least 3 km.

EXPLANATION. STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS.

Draw the indicated vector.

Start with an arrow going in a southwesterly direction.

The arrow should be at a 55 ̊ angle.

The length of the arrow should indicate that it equal to 3 km in distance.

We will insert negative sign “-“ in both x and y-components as both are in direction of
negative x-axis and negative y-axis.

x = -3 sin55 ̊ y = -3 cos55 ̊
= -3 x .817 = -3 x .573
= -2.451 = -1.719

So, x = -2.451 km and y = -1.719 km

Finding the Components of a Vector

Find the x and y components of the following vector.

EXPLANATION. STEP-BY-STEP PROCESS.

You can find the x and y coordinates using the formulas:

x = r cos 0 y = r sin 0

We know that the variables are:

r = 25 m, cos 50°, sin 50°

Plug the numbers into the formulas complete finding the coordinates.

x = r cos 50° y = r sin 50°

x = 25 x .642 y = 25 x .766
x = 16.05 y = 19.15

Answer is: x = 16.05 m, y = 19.15 m

SCALAR and VECTOR

Based from the two sets of quantities, how do you differentiate

SCALAR from VECTOR?

Scalars are quantities that are fully

described by a magnitude (or
numerical value) alone. Vectors are
quantities that are fully described by
both a magnitude and a direction.

To further understand scalar and vector quantities, study the given situation below about distance
and displacement. Refer to the illustration.

Suppose an object moved from point A to B

with a distance of 30 meters. Then it moved
backwards from point B to point C covering 10
meters.

Given: d1 = 30 m; d2 = 10 m

Answer the following questions. Use the given formula.

1. What is the total distance (dT) 2. What is its displacement (dR)? Remember that DISTANCE
covered by the object? is the length of the path
dR = (d1) + (-d2) travelled by a body moving
dT = d1 + d2
from initial to final position,
while DISPLACEMENT is the
dT = 30 m + 10 m dR = (30 m) + (-10 m)
shortest distance between
the initial and final position
dT = 40 m dR = 20 m of the body.

The negative sign for d2 means

that this displacement has an
opposite direction to d1.
