GE 1: UNDERSTANDING THE SELF

First Semester, SY 2020-2021
PRELIMS

ACTIVITY #1

TOPIC: Philosophical Perspective of the Self

A. Select one (1) item/statement and explain it comprehensively (25 points).

1. The unexamined life is not worth living.

“THE UNEXAMINED LIFE IS NOT WORTH LIVING”

Throughout our life, we are always asking our selves what really is the purpose of our
life. And obviously neither of us cannot easily answer or explain the meaning of life.
Nonetheless, we have life because God gave us a purpose to live and we must examine our life
so that it will be worthy.
There is this one friend of mine who asked me, “what’s the purpose why do live today?”
and I just shrugged and asked the same question to myself. I really don’t know what should I
answer to her when in fact I also don’t know the purpose of my life. But then, one of our
teachers, who happened to be a priest said to us, “God made us because we have a purpose and a
mission to do why we are alive today. And you, yourself is the one who can find your purpose in
life, not your friend, not your teacher, neither your parents. It’s yourself.” That taught me that no
one can’t find the answer except myself due to the fact that we have different perspective, not
just that but we are also have different purpose in this world. And in order to know that, we
should examine our life.
We examine our life for us to be worthy. We are in the world that everything changes, we
must move on and adapt any situations but the lessons we have learnt from the past should stay
in our minds and hearts. But let us put in our minds that through our journey in examining our
life we should know what we are doing and know the goal of our life. We should also seek for
goodness, be hopeful and don’t forget to be happy every day. And I think that’s the life worth
living.
