Types of Speech Context

Context is defined as the environment where communication takes place. Communication context can
be intrapersonal or interpersonal.

1. Intrapersonal Communication-refers to a person’s communication with himself or herself. In other

words, it is communication with oneself. Communication is taking place in the mind (Syjueco,2016). The
speaker act both as the sender and the receiver of the message. “The message is made up of your thoughts
and feelings. The channel is your brain, which processes what you are thinking and feeling. There is
feedback in the sense that as you talk to yourself, you discard certain ideas and replace them with
others.”(Hybels & Weaver, 2012, p.16) Examples:
• You felt happy while thinking about how your teacher appreciated you for submitting
your projectbefore the due date and you reflected on why this was so.
• Telling yourself to stop doing certain things which you know are harmful to you. •Making
plans or decisions

2. Interpersonal- refers to communication between and among people and establishes personal relationship
between and among them. It could be face-to-face or via gadget such as cell phone. Interpersonal
communication can be classified not only by the number of the participant involve but also differentiated by
its purpose. Interpersonal communication can be:
a. Dyad Communication- Communication that occurs between two people Examples: •
You offered feedback on the speech performance of your classmate.
• You provided comfort to a friend who was feeling down.
b. Small Group – This refers to communication that involves at least three but not more than twelve people
engaging in a face-to-face interaction to achieve a desired goal. In this type of communication, all participants
can freely share ideas in a loose and open discussion.
Example:
• You are participating in an organizational meeting which aims to address the concerns of your
fellowstudents. You are having a discussion with your group mates on how to finish the assigned tasks. c.
Public – This type refers to communication that requires you to deliver or send the message before or in front
of a group. The message can be driven by informational or persuasive purposes. “In public communication,
unlike in

interpersonal and small group, the channels are more exaggerated. The voice is louder, and the gestures
are more expansive because the audience is bigger. The speaker might use additional visual channels such
as slides or a Power Point presentation.” (Hybels & Weaver, 2012, p 19) Examples:
• You deliver a graduation speech to your batch.
• You participate in a declamation, oratorical, or debate contest watched by several people. d.
MassCommunication – This refers to communication that takes place through television, radio, newspapers,
magazines, books, billboards, internet, and other types of media.
Example:
• You are a student journalist articulating your stand on current issues through the school’s newspaper

Speech Style

In the previous lesson, it was mentioned that people use different strategies when they talk to other people in
various situations. Doing this, a person considers factors like age, education, gender, culture and so on. While
talking to a person, one should put attention to the words he/she utters and the way he/she delivers it. These
brought in the speech styles used in the different communication contexts.

Speech style is “the way in which something is said, done, expressed, or performed,” and it corresponds to
speech contexts (Diwa-Syjueco, 2016). According to Martin Joos (1959) there are five speech styles. These are
(1) intimate, (2) casual,
(3) consultative, (4) formal, (5) frozen. Each style dictates what appropriate language or vocabulary should be
used or observed.

A. Intimate-is non-public Speech Style that uses private vocabulary and includes nonverbal messages
(holding hands, kissing etc.). It is a style in which meaning is shared even without “correct linguistic forms”.
This occurs among people who have known each other for a long time and have shared many experiences.
Because they know each other well, they can sometimes complete each other’s sentences and know what the
other person is thinking even before they open their mouths.
This style is private, which occurs between or among close family members or individuals. The language used
in this style may not be shared in public

B. Casual-is a Speech Style used among friends and acquaintances that do not require background
information. The use of slang is common, and interruption occur often. Casual Style is used when there are no
social barriers.
This style is common among peers and friends. Jargon, slang, or the vernacular language are used.

C. Consultative-is the opposite of the intimate style because this style used precisely among people who do
not share common experiences or meaning. This does not preclude disclosure of background information later
in order to become the basis of shared meaning. Consultative Style requires two- way participation and
interruptions can occur during the communication. This style is the standard one. Professional or mutually
acceptable language is a must in this style. Examples of situations are communication between teachers and
students, employers and employees, doctor and patient, judge and lawyer, or President and is constituents.

D. Formal-is used only for imparting information. The speech is well- organized and correct in grammar
anddiction. Technical vocabulary and exact definitions are important in the Formal Style, such as in
presentation. Straightforward and direct, with no circumlocution, this style does not allow interruptions. This
style is used in formal settings. Unlike the consultative style, this is one- way. Examples are sermons by
priests and ministers, State of the Nation Address of the President, formal speeches, or pronouncement by
judges.

E. Frozen- is a formal style whose quality is static, ritualistic, and may even be archaic. Frozen Style
isexemplified by prayers that have been recited in the same way for years, the Pledge of Allegiance or
Panatang Makabayan, and the Oath of Office of any officer, whether of the Student Council or of Congress.
This style is “frozen” in time and remains unchanged. It mostly occurs in ceremonies. Common examples are
the Preamble to the Constitution, Lord’s Prayer, and Allegiance to country or flag.
