CHAPTER III

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter present a research methodologies used in the study. This includes the research design, research

locale ,research respondents, research instrument, data collection procedure, and the statistical treatment of

data.

Research design

The researcher used the Descriptive Method to identify Impacts of sleep insufficiency on the academic

performance of selected HUMSS 12 student of Immaculada Concepcion College. This method is used to

identify the relationship between sleep and academic performance of students. The questionnaire is designed to

be used as a tool to identify the effectivity of sleep insufficiency on the academic performance of selected

HUMSS 12 student of Immaculada Concepcion College. Descriptive method is also used to be able to gather

data from the selected grade 12 HUMSS to answer the sub problems and the main problem stated in the Chapter

1 and to provide relevant results to it.

Research Locale

The researchers have chosen the respondents to be the senior students comprising of six sections, namely:

Amethyst, Amber, Aquamarine, Diamond, Emerald and Garnet from Immaculada Concepcion College. The

population, 12 HUMSS, is composed of one hundred and thirty-eight (138) students.

Below is a table that shows the breakdown of the respondents per section:

Research Respondents

The total population of 12 HUMSS is 210. The total sample size is 138, and was determined at 95% confidence

level, with 5% margin of error. The surveys were created using Google Forms, and disseminated through social

media applications.

Research Instrument

The questionnaires that the researcher used for conducting the survey consist of three (3) parts with fifteen

(15) questions in total. The questionnaire is divided into three parts. The first part is sleep insufficiency it aims

to know what are the reason why students experienced sleep insufficiency. Also, the hour item in the first part

was used to identify sleep deprived and non -deprived- students. The purpose of the second part is to know the

academic performance of students. Lastly, the third part seeks to know how sleep insufficiency affects the

academic performance of student. The questionnaire that has been distributed and answered by the chosen

respondents who are selected 12 HUMSS senior high school of Immaculada Concepcion College is all about

impacts of sleep insufficiency on the academic performance of selected HUMSS 12 student of Immaculada

Concepcion College.

Procedure of Data Collection

An online survey was chosen as the method for data collection given the popularity and convenience of the

Internet for students. Moreover, all of the materials that have been gathered by the researcher are reliable and

able to support the study. Additionally, after the thesis adviser approved the questionnaire, the researcher

disseminated the questionnaire to the 138 out of 210 HUMSS Grade 12 student of Immaculada Concepcion

College. The data collection period was four days. To increase response rate, using a messenger the researchers

message a reminder to those who had not yet responded to the questionnaire.

Furthermore, the questionnaire is consisting of three (3) parts which answers only one sub problem each. The

first part is made up of checkboxes and multiple choices. It is consisting of four (4) different questions which

aim different answers to the respondents. Its only goal is to know the causes of sleep insufficiency among the

grade 12 HUMSS students.

The second part is containing of three (3) questions. The respondents were given a choice that will agree to

their answer which are: Always, Frequently, Sometimes, Rarely, and Never. The researcher uses the scaling

system, the Likert Scaling Technique in particular, to find out the general weighted average (GWA) of students

and their academic performance. This will serve as an answer on what is the effect of sleep insufficiency in their

academic performance in class.

Last part is made up of one (1) questions. The respondents answer by choosing the corresponding to the given

situations. This will serve as a basis to answer the sub problem number 3.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The researcher of this study used the following formulas to analyze the results gathered from the survey

questions. Statistical treatment of data is essential to make use of data in the right form . Moreover, the

organization of data is equally important so that appropriate conclusion can be drawn (Siddharta Kalla,2009).

Frequency is the number, proportion or percentage of items in a particular category in a set of data.

Percentage is the proportion or share in relation to a whole. In addition, this is the formula used by the

researcher because aside from it is simple and easy to use; it is also highly accurate because it gives results

directly

The formula for the frequency and percentage:

f
p= x100
n

Where :

P=percentage

F=frequency (number of respondents falling under a particular category)

N=total number of population

The researcher used a percentage and frequency distribution in a display of data that specifies the

percentage of observations that exist for each data point or grouping of data points. Also, it is a particularly

useful method of expressing the relative frequency of survey responses and other data.

Another formula used by the researcher of this study is weighted mean which is used when a data

consists of a frequency. Additionally, a weighted average (weighted mean or scaled average) is used when we

consider some data values to be more important than other values and so we want them to contribute more to the

final "average".

The formula for weighted mean is:

Σ fx
x ¿
−¿ n

Where:

X = is the weighted mean

f = frequency

X = score

n = sample size

The researcher used the Likert Scaling Technique to interpret the assessments of the result of the survey

answered by the respondents. This method assigns a value for each different response . Additionally, to know

the response of the respondents , every category has assigned numerical value like always which is equal to 5

and never is equivalent to 1.The following are the different Likert scale used:

5 -point Likert Scale

Interval Degree of Influence
4.21-5.00 Very High Influence
3.41-4.20 High Influence
2.61-3.40 Influenced
1.81-2.60 Low Influence
1.00-1.80 Not Influenced

Another formula used by the researcher is Cohen’s d to indicate the standardized difference between two means

of this study. Cohen’s d is one of the most common ways to measure effect size. Moreover, the researcher used

this formula because it shows how large an effect of sleep insufficiency to the academic performance of

HUMMS 12 students.

The formula for Cohen ‘s d is:

Where :

M2 ¿Weighted mean2

M1=weighted mean 1

SD1=standard deviation 1

SD2= standard deviation 2

The formula for standard deviation (SD )is:

√ Σ¿ ¿ ¿

Where:

X=individual score

M=the mean of the sample9 ( the group of scores)

N=the sample size

The following are the different Cohen’s rule of thumb used:

Value Interpretation
0.2 Small effect
0.5 Medium effect
0.8 Large effect
