THE PROBLEM
INTRODUCTION
(2007), improving students’ access to higher education has been cited as a major
reason for offering DL courses and programs. Distance Learning involves a student-
centred approach in which the instructor takes the role of the facilitator and students
The literature on education cites several examples of research that has been
conducted on DL (Chambers, 2006; Hagel and Shaw, 2006; Liao, 2006; Muilenburg and
According to Sahin and Shelley (2008) students’ needs and perceptions should be
central in the design, development and delivering distance education courses. Overall,
the literature suggests that there is a need to understand better the variables that affect
understanding of the benefits and limitations of learning by distance and could be useful
enrol in Gingoog City Colleges. Distance learning was positive. Respondents indicated
that they are satisfied with teaching and learning by distance and also satisfied with
learner support provided by the host institute. There remain concerns, however,
regarding the provision of prompt feedback on assignments by facilitators, lack of
enough study facilities to help students with their program and difficulty they
experienced with learning materials that were not self-explanatory. Addressing these
concerns will improve students’ distance learning experiences and enhance students
learning by distance.
As we approach the year 2020, the student population has continued to change
delivery modules have also changed to include on-line (education access through the
internet) and distance education (interactive learning). Often these new educational
technologies are implemented without fully understanding their impact. The traditional
delivery system for higher education has been a classroom setting with a professor
giving a lecture and students listening and writing notes. Interaction between the
professor and student has been viewed as an essential learning element within this
this paradigm. Advances in information technology (IT) are enabling little use of
educational delivery methods such as distance learning (DL) to gain new life. In addition,
The result is that many institutions of higher learning have adopted distance and
on-line education as the next logical step in educational delivery systems. These
systems are being promoted as the educational pedagogy of the future. As distance
learning becomes more prevalent, countries and institutions of higher education (IHE)
that do not provide distance learning courses will need to look at this option to retain and
receptive to taking such online courses and are prepared to do so. This study was
distance and on-line learning. The results of this research provide some strategies to
Theoretical Framework
This study is anchored on the theory of Keegan (1980) that presents key aspects
of distance learning. Some of the elements are: physical separation of teacher and
learner, learning occurs in the context of an educational institution, technical media are
used, teacher and learner communicate, face to face meetings are possible, and an

space (Keegan, 2002) which means it can happen away from an academic institution
and can lead to a degree or credential (Gunawardena, McIsaac, & Jonassen, 2008).

Students. Someone who is studying at a private school that experiences a new mode
of learning.
Teacher. Someone who nurtures and helps to build the knowledge of the students.

country’s largest island Luzon and other major cities under lockdown. Halfway into the
second semester, schools had to cease all face-to-face learning activities. Local and
international electives were cancelled. The national internship program was likewise
suspended, and the physician licensure exam postponed indefinitely. Since being
declared a global pandemic by WHO, there has been great concern in all circles and
levels of society. This has an impact on changing attitudes and behavior patterns in
society, including the enthusiasm for learning. Due to the widespread use of COVID-19,
changing technologies. More efforts are required by all online educators to integrate
current online learning environment to the students or learners, by providing a space for
information exchange and to generate deeper thinking, but only if educators understand
how it would work and how students learn in the online environment. Since education is
no longer held within the school, students play a vital role as facilitators with a
connection to the teacher. Their primary role in distance learning is to establish a
connection and guide the students; (FlipScience, 2020). Distance Learning refers to a
learning delivery modality, where learning takes place between the teacher and the
learners who are geographically remote from each other during instruction. This
modality has three types: Modular Distance Learning (MDL), Online Distance Learning
According to Watts (2016) live streaming video and/or audio are used for
other this is not considered a face-to-face interaction because of the physical separation
(Keegan, 1980). Asynchronous instruction means that teachers and learners do not
have synchronous sessions and that students have access to course content through
the Internet at any time they want or need. Communication among the participants
occurs mainly through email and online forums and is typically moderated by the

Yet another type of Distance learning is blended learning (BL). Garrison and Kanuka
(2004) define Blended learning as combining face-to-face classroom time with online
learning experiences. Although it is not clear as to how much time is allocated to online
in the blended model “the real test of blended learning is the effective integration of the
two main components (face-to-face and Internet technology) such that we are not just
teaching strategies and instructional technology can be used to help individuals who
have different learning styles, needs and interests (Tseng & Walsh Jr., 2016).
Isman (2002) examined that student role from the sense of constructivist
approach. These roles can be fit to the role of student in distance education as well.

collaborative learning with their class members through the technological support,
Students are self-responsible on their learning. They should decide what they want to
learn and make individual study on their subject; Students should come to the solution
for problems with data through the research instead of implementing available data.
Therefore they should be researcher, Students should be problem solvers. They should
implement what they learn on problems and set solutions strategies with using
relevance information, Students should be well informed from the technology to not face
with communication barriers because of technology. In addition to this; they should use
technology to construct the learning with rich materials, Students should be learners
through the life. The students should know how to access and use the information
whatever the instruction was finished. They should reach the information immediately if it
is necessary.

people nowadays live in a technology and media-driven environment, they are expected
to be familiar with skills related to information, media, and technology such as accessing
and evaluating information, using and managing information, analyzing media, creating
media products, and applying technology effectively (Partnership for 21st Century

their instruction to ensure their students meet the requirement of 21st century skills. The
relevant knowledge is expected to establish students’ skills for competitive careers and

21st century learning involves the engagement of students in collaborative work and

for innovation and complex problem solving, metacognitive skills to engage in self-
reflection and self-learning, productivity skills to organize work effectively and efficiently,

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
This chapter presents the methods and procedures to be used in conducting the study. It
includes the research design, research locale, and the respondents of the study, data gathering
Research Design
This study investigated the student perception on distance learning in Gingoog City
Colleges. This study utilized a qualitative design to obtain the opinions of the respondents. The
Research Locale
This study will be conducted at Gingoog City Colleges (GCC), a school that abides by the
core values abbreviated as HALL (humility, accountability, integrity and loyalty). GCC is one of
the leading private schools in Gingoog City which is home to many talents and skills in both
extra-curricular and academics. The school has four departments; Elementary, Junior High
School, Senior High School and College Departments. The basic Education from primary to
Senior H.S offers all subjects and computer subjects. The college department is subdivided into
courses namely; BEED, BSed Major. In Filipino and English, BPE, BSCRIM, BSOA, BSBA and BSIT.
in the second year college students will be selected as the basis of this perception about
Distance learning.
We, the researchers, prepared five questions that are connected to our main topic of
research. The researchers chose respondents that were qualified for this study who were the
The researcher asks permission first and explains clearly what they are going to do. After
giving the questions the respondents will answer five questions the respondents will answer five
questions that are related in online class. And the researchers will collect all the data and read
it.
Research Instrument
The instrument that the researcher will use in this study is composed of 1 part. The style
of the questionnaire was essay type. It depends on the students how many sentences they
write, based on their own opinions. The questionnaire focuses on the main topic that is
connected in our situations nowadays. Asking them what are the reasons why students take
online learning, their perception towards distance learning, we also ask in our questions if they
prefer traditional mode or distance learning, how is it effective for distance learning and what
are the advantages of distance learning. We chose those respondents and tried their best on
CHAPTER 4
Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of data
This chapter presents the data, analysis and interpretation of all the findings that
were covered to answer all the problems presented in chapter 1.
The data are presented, arranged and organized following the order of the problems
given in the chapter 1.
Q1. In your own opinion what is the reason why the student takes online learning
in this present situation?
R1 - It is because it's required to take online learning in order for us to not be left behind
and not wasting time.
R5 - Because of the Covid-19 and this virus is very harmful to everyone that's why we
take online class to prevent the spread of the virus.
Among of this statement the most common answer that this respondent is the Covid-19
because it is the main reason why we take this distance learning due to a fact that it
secure Students safety in terms of health aspect.
R1 - Distance learning will somehow the reason why many students will be failed
because of the connection, no availability of loads and more.
R2 - For me, distance learning gives a lot disadvantages to us students. Where, not all
are capable and stable in life.
R3 - It is a new type of learning strategies that students will stay connected to school
even if the take classes at home.
R4 - Distance learning classes are very intimidating hence, we student could attend
classes online.
R5 - Distance learning for me is what we are currently doing and that is the online
learning.
Among of this statement there are two respondents who said that distance learning may
affect to those students who do not have an stable internet connection or who do not
have enough gadgets to use during their studies and there is possibilities that students
will be failed.
Q3. Which do you prefer, traditional mode of learning or distance learning? Why?
R2- I prefer traditional learning, because it’s more liable than distance learning.
R3 - I prefer traditional learning because you can listen actively during class discussion
without any disturbance on any social media.
R4 - I prefer traditional mode of learning because it is the best way and the most
advantage thing when it comes to learning process.
All of the respondents prefer on traditional learning rather than the distance learning
because traditional learning is very effective for those students who are slow learners
and it is the best way when it comes to learning process.
R1 - For me, it's not just totally effective because as a student it's really hard for me to
learn, to acquire the lesson easier in this kind of learning process.
R2 - Distance learning is effective in a way that students are just in their houses to study
and be resourceful enough with their activities.
R3 - Distance learning is quite effective because students can able to work in their
convenient time and they may also participate in classes which it well give them an
opportunity.
R4 - For me distance learning is not that effective than traditional mode for learning.
R5 - Distance learning is effective in giving us flexible schedule and also in our health
because we can stay away and be safe from the virus.
Among this statement the most common answer of the respondents is that distance
learning is effective in this pandemic where Distance learning can give student an
opportunity to continue their studies despite on the increasing rate of the pandemic.
Q5. In your own opinion what are the advantages of the distance mode of
learning?
R2 - The advantages of distance learning are in favor for those students who are
capable enough having gadgets and stable connections.
R3 – It well provide benefits for students to stay in touch in classroom settings away
from the deadly virus and also it will give them time to find opportunity or part time job
without a conflict of classes.
R4 - the Advantage of distance learning process is we can be lessen the school fund
and have an opportunity to learn and stay in touch in the classroom setting.
R5 – The advantages of the distance mode of learning is the flexible time, lower
expenses in transportation, our health it hinders us to not be sick from the virus, passing
of the assignments, activities and etc. is easier and allows you to be more independent.
As per respondent said that distance learning has an advantages such students has an
opportunity to stay in touch in the classroom setting and learn even when you're at home
or in work because you have the opportunity to find part time job and allows to be more
independent.
Interpretation
As the study of Sahin and Shelley (2008) students’ needs and perceptions should
be central in the design, development and delivering distance education courses.
Overall, the literature suggests that there is a need to understand better the variables
that affect student enjoyment of distance learning courses.
Q2. Which do you prefer, traditional mode of learning or distance learning? why?
Out of the survey provided the common answer of the respondents is traditional
mode of learning for the reason that it is more liable than distance learning. More likely
students prefer on having a conducive where they felt the essence of being a students
and acquired lessons personally.
CHAPTER 5
SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
Summary
The main goal of our research is to help the students understand what the purpose of

learning? Why?
Out of the survey provided the common answer of the respondents is traditional
mode of learning for the reason that it is more liable than distance learning. More likely
students prefer on having a conducive where they felt the essence of being a students
Therefore we conclude that this study is very vital in the student’s life it’s because
they may learn what the differences of Traditional mode are or Distance learning. Even
in this pandemic all people may adjust what’s happening in the surrounding especially to
all students who tried their best and eager to learn. But based on our observation few
students who focused on their study it’s because we only used Distance learning. Some
of the students feel relaxed because they didn’t felt the essence of being a student the
essence of their teachers physically. But some also of the students eager to learn but
It hurts to see children miss the dear opportunity to get education. As a future
teacher, we encourage learners worldwide to take heart and have hoped that we shall
overcome. Teachers all over the world have an obligation to educate. We pray to God
that, even as we continue to use science to combat this pandemic, He may continue to
guide us and protect us. Let the entire world stand strong and united against this
pandemic.”
Recommendation
Based on the findings and conclusion the following recommendations are
1. Since the students are experiencing this distance learning nowadays they must
2. The teacher must be elastic for understanding every students situation and they
must give more interactive activities so that student can understand well.
3. The researcher for the next research must consider a problem that is best
manifested by the selected subject so that the result of the research is good.
