History
Archimedes - Archimedes of Syracuse was a Greek mathematician,
physicist, engineer, inventor, and astronomer. Although few details of his
life are known, he is regarded as one of the leading scientists in classical
antiquity.

born c. 287 BCE, Syracuse, Sicily Italy and died 212/211 BCE, Syracuse),.

one of the most famous mathematician and inventor in ancient Greece.

Archimedes is especially important for his discovery of the relation between
the surface and volume.

The Archimedes principle

Archiemedes Principle stated that when a object is totally or partially immersed in fluid, it
experience an upthrust equal to the weight of the fluid displaced.
the principle is most frequently applied to the behavior of the objects in the water. And helps to
explain the floating and sinking, and why objects seem lighter in the water.

If a glass is filled to the top with water and then ice cubes are added to it, what happens?
Just like the water spilled over the edge when Archimedes entered his bathtub, the water in the
glass will spill over when ice cubes are added to it.
If the water that spilled out were weighed (weight is a downward force), it would equal the
upward (buoyant) force on the object. From the buoyant force, the volume or average density of
the object can be determined.
Density

Fresh water is less dense than sea water and warm water less dense than cold water so warm fresh
water need to displaced more to keep the upthrust force equal with weight of the boat so it still can
float.

Fact the dead sea is usually a high salt concentration means that people can easily float in dead sea due
to natural buoyancy

Buoyancy
Buoyancy is the force that causes objects to float. It is the force exerted on an object that is
partly or wholly immersed in a fluid. Buoyancy is caused by the differences in pressure acting
on opposite sides of an object immersed in a static fluid. It is also known as the buoyant force.
What cause buoyant force?
 Buoyant force is the upward force on an object exerted by surrounding fluid.
 When a object pushes water, the water pushes back with as much force as it can.
 If the water can push back as hard. The object will float., and if it not the object will sink

Forces acting on buoyancy

 the buoyant force is caused by the difference between the pressure at the top of the object
(gravitational force), which pushes it downward, and the pressure at the bottom (buoyant
force), which pushes it upward
 since the pressure at the bottom is always greater than at the top, every object submerged in
a fluid feels an upward buoyant force

(KEEP IT SIMLE)

 buoyancy = the floating force

 water is heavier than the object so the object floats (depend on the place)
 buoyant force is measured in Newtons(N)

Condition of equilibrium of floating and sub-merged bodies

 Positive buoyancy: buoyant force is greater than weight so the object floats.
 Neutral buoyancy: buoyant force is equal to weight so the object is suspended in the fluid.
 Negative buoyancy: buoyancy force is less than weight so the object sinks.
