Narrative Report
st
1 Classroom Observation (MAPEH 10) – March 23, 2021

Observation
a. Instructional Materials
As to what I have observed, the instructional material being utilized by the learners at that time was via
Microsoft PowerPoint. It is an electronic program that has a collection of sequential sub-topics contained
in each slide and was put together according to the learners' preferred theme of creativity since group
reporting was scheduled for that day's session. The content of each group's presentation was excerpted
from their respective subject textbook of which was assigned by the teacher. Considering that the
subject matter was all about photography and its basic position and angles, the learners artistically
made their report presentations commendably. On top of that, the learners had the initiative to
incorporate pre-recorded videos of themselves which they discussed and shared their topic fluently.
Furthermore, every after group presentation, the teacher then encouraged the learners to share to the
class their ideas extracted from valid articles coming from the internet every time he proposed follow-up
questions.

b. Classroom Routines and Procedures

Before starting the class properly, the teacher announced that he will give 10 more minutes to let the
other learners join who weren’t there yet in the Google meet. After that, the teacher then checked the
mental status of the learners like asking how they are doing and greeted them. Recapitulation was then
followed where the teacher called some learners to summarize what happened from the last Google
meet session. Then, the teacher announced the commencement of scheduled group report
presentations. Every time one group would successfully present their topics, it was notable that the
teacher would always supplement stimulating real-life scenario questions with reference to the specific
topic being discussed in the class. Consequently, it was noticeable that the teacher's strategy was to first
announce the question, give the learners time to comprehend for a bit of time and then calls a learner to
answer. If ever the called learner could not convey his/her answer to the question, the teacher would
give chance to the other learners and would also mention undergraduate student observer to answer. If
a particular learner has difficulty in answering due to internet connection interruptions, the teacher
would mention another learner to repeat the question that would ensure his learners were actively
listening. The cycle would be like that ‘til he was satisfied with the class' participation and then proceeds
to the next group of reporters until the subject time has ended. Before ending the day’s session, the
teacher commended all the learners for their effort in their group reporting presentations and said he
will be expecting to see the class next session.

Analysis
All through the class observation, I have noticed that the teacher executed admirable teaching technique
which he utilized one of the most powerful teaching tool; the Socratic Method. In my point of view, this is
an effective strategy amidst new-normal education since classes are held in an online setting. In view of
the fact that the teacher doesn’t have the 100% guarantee that all of the learners are paying attention
to the class session, Socratic Method is the best strategy where the teacher poses questions rather than
providing answers of which can stimulate active class participation among learners as well as can boost
learner’s confidence in speaking up. Plus, it is a commendable strategy that the teacher incorporated
collaborative learning where the class was particularly assigned to prepare and present a topic report. In
this way, the learners are solely responsible for their own learning absorption and for also helping their
co-learners to learn. Furthermore, I liked the idea that even though, we, the 3rd-year undergraduate
students were only tasked to observe his class, the teacher wanted us to participate in the class
discussion just like the rest of his regular students to encourage active listening and grasp the experience
enjoyably.

Reflection

For this first day’s observation, I have reflected that this kind of grasping new knowledge is very essential
for us undergraduate students. Since we are delving on classroom observation, it is an immense help to
shape us and train ourselves to become efficient and innovative educators soon. Especially that we are
now in a generation of technologies and applied science innovation, future educators should learn and
has to be versatile in handling classroom management since it is a great challenge sustaining teaching
and learning engagement in an online setting With my firsthand experience in an online class
observation, I can say that I am honored to clench new learnings and observe gaps with reference to
managing teaching strategies and in giving out quality learning experience for learners.

Gap/s (for the Action Research)

Based on my observation, I have noticed that there is a great inconsistency of sustaining teacher and
learner relationship. Consistent interaction among the learners has been quite difficult for the teacher
especially given the fact that the classes in new normal education are commenced through online
setting. The teacher doesn’t have the full control in the learning engagement because some learners
don’t have great access to internet connectivity or maybe the learners are just lazy to engage in the
class. The quality of education the teacher has been providing has been received less by the learners due
to the fact that the guarantee to a strong student-teacher interaction is weak.
