1. INTRODUCTION
This Design Note consists of the Analysis and Design of Steel Composite I Girder Superstructure
for the following span of Flyover A at Santragachi Bus Terminus:
Sl. No. Span mkd. Girder No. Span Arrangement Girder Length
( n x L) (m)
1 P# – P# 4 1 x 19.50 19.450
2 P# – P# 4 1 x 19.50 19.500
3 P# – P# 4 1 x 19.50 19.450
This design note covers the analysis and the design of the Steel Composite I Girder Superstructure
for the Loading classified by IRC for Road Bridges.
The design of various components of the flyover, in general are based on provisions of latest IRC
Codes. The list of IRC Codes (latest revisions) given below will serve as a guide for the analysis
and design of the structure.
A IRC: 5 – 1998
B IRC: 6 – 2000
C IRC: 18 – 2000
D IRC: 21 – 2000
E IRC: 22 – 1986
4. LOADING
The self-weight of I girder has been considered as the DL for the analysis and design.
The weight of the wearing coat and the weight of the crash barrier have been considered as the
SIDL for the analysis and design.
560617771.xls Introduction
2 lanes of Class A or Single 40R wheeled load as described in IRC: 6-2014 with impact are
considered for analysis and design.
The various types of Load combinations considered for design are as per the IRC guidelines.
The superstructure has been modelled and analysed in STAAD for the following conditions:
In the construction stage, the model is analysed for the static load that may occur in the
construction period. The section is checked for the construction stage stresses as per the codal
provisions
In the service stage the model is analysed for the combinations of the different loads at service,
namely the Dead Load, Super Imposed Dead Load and worst combination of Live Load. The
section is checked for the service stage stresses as per the codal provisions.
In the ultimate stage the model is analysed for the combinations of the different loads for failure
condition at ultimate load, namely Permanent Load, Super Imposed Dead Load and worst
combination of Live Load. The section is checked for the ultimate stage forces as per the codal
provisions.

As per Cl 611.4.1.1.3, based on the fatigue strength of connector and the range of horizontal shear per unit length of
Shear Connector is given by : P = ∑Qr / Vr
Where, Qr = the allowable range of hor. Shear for each connector = a . A. 10-3 (for h/d≥4)
Here, a = 55 Mpa for 20x105 cycles
A = Area of stud = ( 3 x PI() / 4 x 22^2 ) = 1140.4 mm2
