3 P# – P# 4 1 x 19.50 19.450

This design note covers the analysis and the design of the Steel Composite I Girder Superstructure
for the Loading classified by IRC for Road Bridges.

2.    DESIGN STANDARDS

The design of various components of the flyover, in general are based on provisions of latest IRC
Codes. The list of IRC Codes (latest revisions) given below will serve as a guide for the analysis
and design of the structure.

A IRC: 5 – 1998
B IRC: 6 – 2000
C IRC: 18 – 2000
D IRC: 21 – 2000
E IRC: 22 – 1986

3.    GENERAL DETAILS

A Overall Span (Face to Face of Girder) = 19.500 m

B Effective Span (C/C of Bearing) = 18.500 m
C Clear Carriage-way width of flyover = 6.00 m
D Overall width of flyover = 6.90 m
E Nos. of Longitudinal Girder = 4

4.    LOADING

4.1          Dead Load (DL) or Base Load

The self-weight of I girder has been considered as the DL for the analysis and design.

4.2          Super Imposed Dead Load (SIDL)

The weight of the wearing coat and the weight of the crash barrier have been considered as the
SIDL for the analysis and design.

4.3          Live Load (LL)

560617771.xls Introduction
2 lanes of Class A or Single 40R wheeled load as described in IRC: 6-2014 with impact are
considered for analysis and design.

4.4          Load Combination (LC)

The various types of Load combinations considered for design are as per the IRC guidelines.

5.    STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN

The superstructure has been modelled and analysed in STAAD for the following conditions:

5.1          Construction Stage

In the construction stage, the model is analysed for the static load that may occur in the
construction period. The section is checked for the construction stage stresses as per the codal
provisions

5.2          Service Stage

In the service stage the model is analysed for the combinations of the different loads at service,
namely the Dead Load, Super Imposed Dead Load and worst combination of Live Load. The
section is checked for the service stage stresses as per the codal provisions.

5.3          Ultimate Stage

In the ultimate stage the model is analysed for the combinations of the different loads for failure
condition at ultimate load, namely Permanent Load, Super Imposed Dead Load and worst
combination of Live Load. The section is checked for the ultimate stage forces as per the codal
provisions.

Calculation of Load & Moment for Long Girder during Construction of Deck Slab
Consider the construction to be done without Tressle suports.

Effective Width of deck slab

For G1 = 1500 mm
For G2, G3, G4 & G5 = 1500 mm
For G6 = 1500 mm
Using maximum width for all girder 1500 mm
Unit weight of Green Concrete 2.6 t/m3
Live Load at the Time of casting of Deck Slab 0.3 t/m2
Depth of Slab 200 mm
C/S area of Slab = 0.3 m2
C/S area of Haunch = 0 m2
Total C/S area = 0.3 m2
Dead Load per Running metre = 0.78 t/m
S/W of Steel Girder 0.71 t/m
Live Load per Running Metre of Girder 0.450 t/m
So, Total udl 1.94 t/m
Distance between C/C of Bearing 37.2 m
Max Bending Moment 335.58 t-m
Max Shear Force 36.08 t

Hence, no of bolts required, n = SQ.RT (6Mw / m.p.R)

Where, Mw = Moment taken by Web only = M x Iw / I
M = Total Bending Moment = 535.61 ton-m
Iw = Moment of Innertia of Web only = 0.01 x 1.136^3 / 12 = 0.0012 m4
Iw = Moment of Innertia of the complete section = 0.0204 m4
Hence, Mw = 535.61 x 0.0012 / 0.0204 = 32.04 ton-m
m = no of rows of bolts = 4 Row p = horizontal pitch of bolts = 70 mm
R = bolt value = 48/10 = 4.80 ton
Hence, no of required bolts, n = SQRT ( 6 x 32.04 / ( 4 x 0.07 x 4.8 ) ) = 11.96

∑x = 293982.1248 mm2 =
2
0.294 m2
∑y2 = 3567200 mm2 = 3.5672 m2
So, ∑r2 = ( 0.294 + 3.5672 ) = 3.861 m2
Max. r = SQRT(105^2 + 420^2 ) mm = 433 mm = 0.433 m
So, Fm = ( 36.04 x 0.433 / 3.861 ) ton = 4.042 ton

Force on each bolt due to direct shear, Fa = 26.659 / ( 13 x 4 ) ton = 0.513 ton

If q is the angle between Fm and Fa, then, cosq = 105 /SQRT(105^2 + 420^2) = 0.243

Hence, Resultants Force, Fr = Sqrt ( Fm^2 + Fa^2 + 2.Fm.Fa.cosq ) = 4.196 ton

Force in splice plate= 40303.2 Kg
< 1/2 capacity of Splice plate provided = 134540 Kg
Capacity of each Bolt:
Here, minimum plate thickness = 16 mm
So, Bolt Capacity = Minimum of 101.6 kN & (6x16) kN = 96 kN
Total No of bolt required = Maximum of ( 1.05 x 403.032 & 1345.4 ) / 96 = 14.1 Nos.

WEB SPLICE :
Area of Web plate = 11360 mm2 = 113.6 cm2
Min area reqd for splice plate = 1.05 times of Area = 11928 mm2 = 119.28 cm2

Consider Web splice at both side of web.

Depth of Splice consider, ds = 950 mm.
So, required thickness of each splice plate, t = tw x dw2 / ( 2ds2) = 10 * 1136^2 / ( 2 * 950^2) = 7.15 mm
Provide: 2 No 950 X 8
Area provided = 2*950*8 = 15200 mm2 = 152 cm2
Shear stress in web(v) = 308.90 Kg/cm2

Hence, no of bolts required, n = SQ.RT (6Mw / m.p.R)

Where, Mw = Moment taken by Web only = M x Iw / I
M = Total Bending Moment = 36.65 ton-m
Iw = Moment of Innertia of Web only = 0.01 x 1.136^3 / 12 = 0.0012 m4
Iw = Moment of Innertia of the complete section = 0.0204 m4
Hence, Mw = 36.65 x 0.0012 / 0.0204 = 2.19 ton-m
m = no of rows of bolts = 2 Row p = horizontal pitch of bolts = 90 mm
R = bolt value = 48/10 = 4.80 ton
Hence, no of required bolts, n = SQRT ( 6 x 2.19 / ( 2 x 0.09 x 4.8 ) ) = 3.90
Provide 12 Nos

Provide, 2 Row 12 Nos. 20 mm dia HSFG Bolt at a pitch 70 mm c/c and edge distance of 90 mm.

Moment about CG of the bolt group = Mw + V x distance of bolt CG from splice centre.
= 2.19 + 59.5311 x (45 + 0.5x90) /1000 ton-m
= 7.55 ton-m

Force on the extreme right top or bottom bolt, Fm = M x r / ∑r2

Here, ∑r = ∑x2 + ∑y2
2
∑x =2
48600 mm2 = 0.0486 m2
∑y2 = 1401400 mm2 = 1.4014 m2
So, ∑r2 = ( 0.0486 + 1.4014 ) = 1.450 m2
Max. r = SQRT(45^2 + 385^2 ) mm = 388 mm = 0.388 m
So, Fm = ( 7.55 x 0.388 / 1.45 ) ton = 2.02 ton

Force on each bolt due to direct shear, Fa = 59.5311 / ( 12 x 2 ) ton = 2.48 ton

If q is the angle between Fm and Fa, then, cosq = 45 /SQRT(45^2 + 385^2) = 0.116

Hence, Resultants Force, Fr = Sqrt ( Fm^2 + Fa^2 + 2.Fm.Fa.cosq ) = 3.375 ton

< 4.8 ton Hence, Safe

DESIGN OF SHEAR CONNECTOR: ( As per IRC 22-1986)

Here, use HTS shear Studs as shear connector.
Consider, Diameter of stud = 22 mm dia 100 mm Long & 3 Nos. in a row
So, h/d = 100 / 22 = 4.545 ≥ 4, Hence OK

Spacing of Studs : Maximum : a) 3 times the thickness of deck = 600 mm

400 mm b) 4 times the length of Stud = 400 mm Whichever is minimum
c) 600 mm
Minimum : 75 mm (Ref clause 611.4.2 of IRC:22-1986)

Vr = Horizontal shear per unit length= VR Ac Y / I (Ref clause 611.4.1.1.2 of IRC:22-1986)

VR = Vertical Shear
Ac = Area of transformed Section
Y = Distance of centroid of area Ac from NA of composite section
I = Moment of inertia of composite section

At Support
Type Load (VR) Aconc Y I Vr
(t) mm2 mm mm4 N/mm
SIDL 13.80 113.33*200 = 22666.67 708.2-100 = 608.20 3.180E+10 59.83
LL 25.61 226.67*200 = 45333.33 585.3-100 = 485.30 3.85E+10 146.36
Total 206.19

As per Cl 611.4.1.1.3, based on the fatigue strength of connector and the range of horizontal shear per unit length of
Shear Connector is given by : P = ∑Qr / Vr
Where, Qr = the allowable range of hor. Shear for each connector = a . A. 10-3 (for h/d≥4)
Here, a = 55 Mpa for 20x105 cycles
A = Area of stud = ( 3 x PI() / 4 x 22^2 ) = 1140.4 mm2
Qr = 62.72 kN
Hence, Pr = ( 62722 / 206.19 ) mm = 304.2 mm

As per Cl 611.4.1.2.1, Maximum Horizontal force in the Slab :

H1 = Asl.fy.10
-3

= ( 460*25+440*25+10*1136/2 ) x 250 x 0.001 kN = 7045 kN

H2 = 0.85.fc.bf.hf.10
-3

= 0.85 x 40 x 1.7 x 200 x 0.001 kN = 12 kN

As per Cl 611.4.1.2.2, Ultimate strength of HT stud connector :

Qu = 0.5A ( fck.Ec ) x 10
1/2 -3

= 0.5 x PI/4*22^2 x ( 31622.78*40 )^0.5 x 0.001 kN = 213.8 kN

Hence, number of shear connector between points of maximum moments and supports,
n = H / l Qu
= Min( 7045,11.56 ) / ( 0.85 x 213.8 ) =0

Here, distance between points of max. moments and supports = 18600 mm

Hence, required spacing of Shear Connector = -18600.0 mm
Provided spacing of Shear Connector = 250 mm Revise

DESIGN OF CONNECTION Consider the Bolt for connection is

Calcluation of Bolt Capacity :
Here, bolt used for all connection : HSFG Thread M 20

Therefore, as per IS 4000:1992,

From Table 2, for Single Shear Capacity of Bolt = 50.80 kN
From Cl. 5.3.4 Bearing Capacity = 1.2 x fy x d x t = 6.0 kN x Corr. Plate Thickness
Whichever is Less

Shear Connection
Plate thickness = 12 mm Hence, Bolt Capacity = 5.08 ton
For Outer Girder Location Shear Force = 49.50 ton
Bolt Required = 9.74 Say 10 Nos
For Inner Girder Location Shear Force = 90.98 ton
Bolt Required = 17.91 Say 18 Nos

Moment Connection
Try With 32 mm mm thick Flange Plate
