A Sense of Tranquility in the Middle of a Lockdown

through Urban Gardening
INQUIRER.net BrandRoom / 03:16 PM August 06, 2020

The “new normal” is a phrase often heard

nowadays ever since the pandemic broke out.
Wearing a mask when going outside and practicing
social distancing are just some of the rules that need
to be followed now. Despite this, it’s inspiring to see
people think of ways to keep themselves occupied
while on quarantine.

While some resort to bringing out their inner

artist, others are experimenting more with food and
how they can put together a decent yet tasty meal
with what they have in their fridge. This is because
of the supply shortage that happened when the lockdown started. But this also
birthed the interest of many to plant their own produce at home. Not only do you
get that farm-to-table experience but planting also helps reduce stress and anxiety
by bringing a sense of tranquility.
To be able to engage and unite the community, ARC Refreshment
Corporation launched its new advocacy program dubbed as “Tulay ng Pangarap”.
This is a long-term program that demonstrates the company’s resiliency amidst
the new normal. In line with this is the kickoff of the “My Gulay Garden” project,
which aims to promote gardening and sustainability by encouraging their
consumers to reuse their colorful RC Cola PET bottles as plant pots for the fruits,
vegetables, and herbs that they want to grow in their own space here in the
metro.

Answer the following questions:

1. What is the excerpt about?

2. For whom is this topic addressed to and why?
3. What do you already know about this topic? Where and how have you
acquired this knowledge?
4. Where can you get additional information if you want to know more about the
given topic?
5. What new ideas are here for me to consider?

Notes to the Teacher

The activities in this module are arranged from simple to complex to help the learner
gradually master the desired learning competency. Give him/her the needed support and
guidance so that he/she will be able to recognize and differentiate the various types of sources.

5
Title: Researching a Topic Using Varied Sources

Information can come from virtually anywhere — media, blogs, personal

experiences, books, journal and magazine articles, expert opinions, encyclopedias, and
web pages — and the type of information you need will change depending on the question
you are trying to answer. Look at the following sources of information. Notice the similarities
between them.

TYPES OF INFORMATION SOURCES

Books cover virtually any topic, fact or fiction.
For research purposes, you will probably be looking
for books that synthesize all the information on one
topic to support a particular argument or thesis.
Libraries organize and store their book
collections on shelves called "stacks."

Uses:
• when looking for lots of information on a
topic
• to put your topic in context with other important issues
• to find historical information
• to find summaries of research to support an argument

Encyclopedias are collections of

short, factual entries often written by different
contributors who are knowledgeable about the
topic.
There are two types of encyclopedias:
general and subject. General encyclopedias
provide concise overviews on a wide variety of
topics. Subject encyclopedias contain in-
depth entries focusing on one field of study.

Uses:
• when looking for background information on a topic
• when trying to find key ideas, important dates or concept

A journal is a collection of articles usually written

by scholars in an academic or professional field.
An editorial board reviews articles to decide
whether they should be accepted.
Articles in journals can cover very specific topics
or narrow fields of research.

6
Uses:
• when doing scholarly research
• to find out what has been studied on your topic
• to find bibliographies that point to other relevant research

A database contains citations of articles

in magazines, journals, and newspapers. They
may also contain citations to podcasts, blogs,
videos, and other media types. Some databases
contain abstracts or brief summaries of the
articles, while other databases contain complete,
full-text articles.
Uses:
• when you want to find articles on
your topic in magazines, journals or
newspapers

A magazine is a collection of articles and

images about diverse topics of popular interest and
current events. Usually these articles are written by
journalists or scholars and are geared toward the
average adult. Magazines may cover very "serious"
material, but to find consistent scholarly information,
you should use journals.

Uses:
• to find information or opinions about popular
culture
• to find up-to-date information about current events

A newspaper is a collection of articles about

current events usually published daily. Since there is
at least one in every city, it is a great source for local
information.
Uses:
• to find current information about
international, national and local events
• to find editorials, commentaries, expert or
popular opinions

A library catalog is an organized and searchable

collection of records of every item in a library and can be
found on the library home page. The catalog will point you
to the location of a particular source, or group of sources,
that the library owns on your topic.

Uses:
• to find out what items the library owns on your topic
• to find where a specific item is located in the library

7
The Internet allows you to access most types of information on the Internet through
a browser. One of the main features of the Internet is the ability to quickly link to other
related information. It contains information beyond plain text, including sounds, images, and
video.
The important thing to do when
using information on the Internet is to know
how to evaluate it!
Uses:
• to find current information
• to find information about
companies
• to find both expert and popular
opinions
• to find information about
hobbies and personal interests

Remember!

In your search for information, you eventually face the challenge of evaluating
and selecting those sources you judge to be most appropriate for your needs.
Examine each information source and assess them using the following criteria:
timeliness, authority, audience, relevance, and perspective.

1. The Department of Health (DOH), in partnership with the World Health

Organization (WHO), is jointly raising awareness on the importance of public
mental health, especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
The DOH has launched a multi-sectoral approach for mental health with
programs and interventions across a variety of settings (e.g. workplaces, schools,
communities) aimed at high-risk groups. The commemoration of World Suicide
Prevention Day also calls attention to the plight of those who are undergoing
severe forms of depression.

Example: raising awareness on the importance of public mental health

.

Over 21 million kinder to high school students have enrolled for the coming
2. school year.
Authorities are considering proposals to allow limited face-to-face classes in low
risk areas. But for the most part, classrooms will remain empty due to safety
concerns. Instead of physical classes, the Department of Education will implement
distance or remote learning. This method delivers lessons through various ways,
including online, television, radio, and printed materials.
Colleges and universities are also shifting to distance learning, affecting over
three million higher education students.

Months after the first COVID-19 case in the country, the threat of the pandemic
still persists. As most of the country is now under general community quarantine
3. and more establishments slowly resume operations, some people may start to be
more lenient with the necessary precautions. But nobody should be any less
vigilant in complying with health guidelines.
Most people already have their disinfecting routine down pat, which involves
taking off the mask and disposing of it properly, leaving shoes by the door,
thoroughly washing their hands, and disinfecting whatever was brought inside the
house. It’s easy enough to remember doing all these steps, but not everyone
disinfects as well as they should. Some people tend to gloss over everyday items
that should be cleaned as well.

Depression is a common illness worldwide, with more than 264 million people
4.
affected. Depression is different from usual mood fluctuations and short-lived
emotional responses to challenges in everyday life. Especially when long-lasting
and with moderate or severe intensity, depression may become a serious health
condition. It can cause the affected person to suffer greatly and function poorly at
work, at school and in the family. At its worst, depression can lead to suicide. Close
to 800,000 people die due to suicide every year. Suicide is the second leading
cause of death in 15-29-year-olds.

In June, on a post on Facebook group “Who’s Your Pupper,” a 200,000-strong

group of passionate pet lovers, Nurse Trisha Sulit talked about her “furbaby” Primo,
5. a Golden Labrador.
“Primo helps me with the anxieties I am experiencing right now. The pandemic
really took its toll on my mental health. The broken system and even the little things
bother me. Primo makes sure I get a good laugh everyday. Most days, it's
heartbreaking to leave, but I know I have to continue to help flatten the curve and
work hard so I can spoil him too. It's priceless whenever I come home to him (after
disinfecting of course) because he greets me like I'm the best human in the world!
He keeps me going despite all the hardships because I know that at the end of the
day, I'll always have him to come home to.”
