individual.

AND MAY GOD BLESS HIS CHILDREN

By Nilda G. Milan

What has come to our youth now fondly called the millennials?

As the world continues to march to a future where human beings are expected to get
liberated from hard labor and be completely marveled by the sweet taste of technology, the
future of our youth is doomed.

Technology should have made students smarter and diligent, unfortunately, it`s the flip
side of it. Their addiction to gadgets has greatly affected their performance in school. Instead
of hustling themselves to finish a certain task, they were snagged on the lures of cybergames
such as the addicting mobile legends. When students were assigned with a home reading
7
task, they are lethargic on doing it but have heightened vibrance and energy reading wattpad
stories, doing groupchats, having selfies in all angles only to realize they need to cram only
for compliance to piles of school requirements.

Addiction to gadgets and other sorts of technology poses a more serious problem than
the one cited earlier. For one, the youth is also exposed to pornography which has an easy
access. Before they knew it, they got hooked on the sticky web of pornhub. And if worse
comes to worst, they became the villain of their own story where they put into practice the
things they learned from obscene videos. They tasted and enjoyed the dirty flavors of
forbidden videos not reckoning the destructive effects of restricted films in their lives. And the
domino effects? – absenteeism, poor grades, school dropped- out, low self-esteem,
deteriorated health, teenage pregnancy and even death due to helplessness, misguidance,
and deprivation of sleep and good nutrition.

There are other numerous negative repercussions of technology affecting not only
teenagers but the whole humanity. This is called iDisorder. According to Professor Larry
Rosen of California University, this disorder exhibits signs and symptoms of psychiatric
disorders such as narcissism and ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder). These lead
to overuse of technology, obsessive need to check for text messages, desperate desire to
constantly update Facebook status and addiction to iPhone games as mentioned earlier.

Thanks to science and technology, we live in an era of comfort and improvement so to

speak. However, technology makes the youth excessively engrossed with these most loved
products of technology- cellphones, tablets, and computers which seriously endanger their
future. According to a study, technology should be used by people with a special kind of
responsibility called Digital Responsibility. This means we need to be aware of the impact that
technology has on our health, environment, and society at large in order to avoid the
aforementioned harmful effects of it.

May God bless these children. And may He intervene through proper guidance and
supervision of parents, guardians, and teachers, inculcating in the minds and hearts of these
young individuals the importance of developing positive values and fear of God through
technology. At the end of the day, the youths of the 21st Century triumph as a promise of a
bright tomorrow awaits them for they eventually took advantage of technology the positive
way especially at this time of pandemic.

Notes to the Teacher

The activities in this module are arranged from simple to complex to help the learner
gradually master the desired learning competency. Give him/her the needed support
and guidance so that he/she will be able to perform the task to prepare him/her later on
in gaining a richer understanding of the text by questioning, dissecting and relating to
it. The various tasks should also help them cultivate an appreciation for literature and
for critical analysis of the ideas presented.

8
Close reading has become a widely-used approach in teaching comprehension. Close
reading is an approach to teaching comprehension that insists students extract meaning from
text by examining carefully how language is used in the passage itself.
The main purpose of close reading is to engage students in the reading of complex
texts and to gain a richer understanding of the text by questioning, dissecting, and relating to
it. This practice should also help to cultivate an appreciation for literature.
Close reading or thorough reading through a text is the most effective way to
understand a journal, article, book, etc., but it also takes commitment and focus.

The following are techniques for close reading.

1. SURVEY - Scan images, titles,

emphasized terms that are underlined or in bold.

Example:
Look at the images, what do you think is the selection about?
You`re right? It is about the bad effects of technology to teenagers.

Make a survey on the title “And May God Bless His Children”, what does it suggest?
You`re right! The title suggests the intervention of God to save young ones from the harmful
effects of technology.

2. QUESTION – Before you start reading, write down one

question for each section of the text theorizing on what the author
may be trying to say.

Example:
In the first paragraph, you may ask – With the onset of technology, why is the future of the
millenials doomed?

Very good! This question helps you interact with the writer that technology, when used
irresponsibly, ends the dreams of millenials.
9
3. READ – Read each section closely to
answer the questions that you wrote down.

Example:
What can be inferred about the author`s stand on the issue?

Your answer may be: The author clearly states her stand that technology has eaten the
system of young ones which greatly affects their future.

You may say I agree with her because as a millennial, I am a living witness to the irresponsible
use of technology.

In the sample question, you were asked to infer. Remember that when you close read a text,
you are expected to make inferences. And how can you make an inference? It's simple. When
you make an inference, try to understand by using clues from the text and what you know
based on your personal experiences. These are keys to help you figure out what is not directly
stated in the text.

Aside from making inferences, you also need to justify your answer. This means that you need
to show or prove to be right or reasonable by citing lines or statements from the text.

Example:
Technology can make students intelligent and independent learners.
Say Agree or Disagree by citing points from the text.

Your answer will be disagree because from the text, it says- Technology should have made
students smarter and diligent, unfortunately, it's the flip side of it.

4. REVIEW – review the notes you have taken down.

Example:

10
Close reading, however, may not always be about reading a complex text. This means
that a teacher may use texts beyond PIE (Persuade, Inform, Entertain) so that students who
are applying close reading skills may not get bored. There are innovative ideas like song lyrics,
talking about sign post, picture talk, reading a journal and others. In these cases, students
need to pay attention to all the details and make an intelligent analysis of the ideas presented
in order to extract meaning.

will experience mild to moderate
respiratory illness and recover without
requiring special treatment. Older
people, and those with underlying
medical problems like cardiovascular
disease, diabetes, chronic respiratory
disease, and cancer are more likely to
develop serious illness.
The best way to prevent and slow
down the transmission is to be well-
informed about the COVID-19 virus, the
disease it causes and how it spreads.
Protect yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-based
rub frequently and not touching your face.
At this time, there are no specific vaccines or treatments for COVID-19. However, there

My Father’s Legacy
By Nilda G. Milan

Building homes, chattels, and crafts under the scorching
sun`s rays
A simple sip from his cup makes him vibrant and antsy
In my heart, I looked up to him in many ways.

Day and night, he raised us from sweat and blood

So when a traitor of health befalls and brings us to a deep dread
His unfathomable valor triumphs as he takes the excruciating

Dear Journal,

We`re here in the summer capital of the Philippines. The climate is still great, that`s why
local and foreign tourists always include Baguio in the list of must-see places not only during
18
summer. Strawberries are still in season. I love going to the market to look for the best peanut
brittle and the tastiest ube jam.

We spent a good part of the day in Camp John Hay- on horses. I looked for my friend Milky
but I saw another girl already on top of him. It`s okay, any of the horses would do.
Before going home, we heard mass at the Cathedral. Any visit to Baguio won`t be complete
without dropping by the Cathedral. I thanked God for a very pleasurable summer and prayed
for a safe trip home.
Love lots,
Sophie
