CORRELATIVE CONJUNCTIONS

Definition

Correlative Conjunctions
What are
In English,
correlative
conjunctions? Co >> means together or with
Relative >> means that the things or activities are
related,kind of the some, there are two words that are basically
the same,and they are work together.

Conjunctions >> are word that we use to join things


together.

So, Correlative Conjunctions means join statements of related information.

Functions :
Menghubungkan
 Nouns with nouns
ex : Both tomato and chili grow well in my garden)
 Adjectives with adjectives
ex : My mother is not only preety but also kind)
 Prepositional with prepositional
ex : We will have vacation either in Jakarta or in Bandung)
 Independent clause with independent clause
ex : I not only sweep the floor,but also wash the dishes)

Types :
 Either … or  Neither … or
 Both … and  Not only … but also

EITHER … OR (Choice)  Baik … maupun


Characteristics :
 Used to express alternative or choice between two (+)
(digunakan untuk positive sentence)
 We used it to emphasize choices
 You have to choose/do one or the other.
 Referring to a choice between two possibilities
 The verb depends on the noun / the pronoun that follows or.
(Subjek yang terdekat dengan verb yang menentukan bentuk singular/plural)
 If it’s singular use the singular verb,
 If it’s plural use the plural verb.
Form :
Either + … + or…
(sebagai subject)
(…) bisa berupa nouns,adjectives,prepositional,atau independent clause
S + V + either …or…
(sebagai object,karena diletakkan setelah V)
S + either + V + or + V
(menghubungkan IC)

Examples :

1. X : The Clerk has the keys


Y : The secretary has the keys
Either the Clerk or the Secretary has the keys

2. X : You can stay with us


Y : You can stay with us
You can either stay or come with us

3. Sarah is going to make dinner


The girls are going to make dinner
Either Sarah or The girls are going to make dinner

Characteristics :
 Two negative alternatives
 not X,not Y
 The verb agrees with a second alternative
(Subjek yang terdekat dengan verb yang menentukan bentuk singular/plural)

Neither + … + nor…
(sebagai subject)

(menghubungkan IC yg letaknya setelah subject)

Examples :

1. X : John not mentioned anything about moving house


Y : His sister mentioned anything about moving house
Neither John nor His sister mentioned anything about moving house

2. X : I don’t smoke
Y : I don’t drink
I neither smoke nor drink

3. X : The cat not sleep


Y : The not eat
The cat neither sleep nor eat

Jika dalam sebuah kalimat sdh ada kata NEITHER…NOR,maka kata NOT tidak
dibutuhkan lagi.
Not only … but also (surprise)  tidak hanya … tapi juga
Characteristics :
 Use to emphasis of two coordinated element in a sentence
(the two things that are parallel or similar)
 1st case is surprise,and the 2nd caseis even more of a surprise
 Subjek yang terdekat dengan verb yang menentukan bentuk singular/plural
 If it’s singular use the singular verb,
 If it’s plural use the plural verb.

Form :
S + V + not only … + but also …
(sebagai object)
(…) bisa berupa nouns,adjectives,prepositional,atau independent clause
Not only …+but also…+V
(sebagai subject)
(diperlukan penambahan aux.verb/helping verb sesuai dgn Subject atau tenses)
S + not only…+but also…
(menghubungkan IC yg letaknya setelah subject)

Example:
1. X : Mary is beautiful
Y : Mary is clever
Mary is not only beautiful but also clever

2. X : She like the artis Katy Pery


Y : She like the artis Taylor Swift
Not only does she like the artist Katy Pery but alsoTaylor Swift.

3. X : Ari help my homework


Y : Ari deliver me to go to house
Ari not only help my homework but also deliver me to go to house

both … and (including)  keduanya


Characteristics :
 Used to connect two coordinated element in a sentence
 Noticed that the two things that is joins should be the same
 Diikuti kata kerja jamak atau plural (jika plural tdk +s/es)

Form :
S + v + both…and…
S + both V + and V
(menghubungkan 2 IC)
Both + S + and + S + V

Example:
1. X : I like coffee
Y : I like tea
I like both coffe and tea

2. X : We love our parents


Y : We respect our parents
We both love and respect our parents

3. X : My father plays tennis


Y : My mother plays tennis
Both My father and My mother play tennis
