Analysis

Let`s Experiment!

Charles` Law Experiment

Materials:
1 Large Beaker or glass
1 balloon
1 Tape measure
Boiling water
Fridge or freezer

Procedure:
1. Inflate the balloon and measure its circumference.

2. Pour boiling water into a large beaker or glass

3. Put the balloon in hot water for 2 minutes, then measure again its circumference.

4. Measure the circumference of the balloon at room temperature.

5. Put the balloon inside the fridge or freezer for 2 minutes. After 2 minutes, get the balloon and
measure its circumference using a tape measure.

Record the result in the table below.

Table 1.

Guide Questions:
Q1. What happens to the size of the balloon as the temperature decreases?
-It expands and get bigger.
Q2. What happens to the size of the balloon as the temperature increases?
-It decreases in size or it shrunk.

Q3. Why does the balloon change its size?

-This is because temperature affects the volume of the balloon. As the temperature increases
the size of the balloon increases in size too and vice versa.
Q4. How does the change in the temperature relate to the volume of gas in the balloon?
-This is due to the gas particles inside the balloon. When it is heated up, the gas particles will
move faster causing the balloon to expand its size and increase its volume. However, if the
temperature decreases, the gas particles inside the balloon will move slowly resulting to the
reduction of its volume size.

Abstraction
1. Explain briefly the relationship of volume and temperature based on the said simple
experiment.
-Temperature and volume is directly proportional to each other. As the temperature
increases, the volume increases too and vice versa.
2. What do you call the relationship shown by the change in volume and temperature of a gas
inside the balloon?
-Mutual or directly proportional relationship.
3. State Charles` Law in your own words.
-It says that for a gas, temperature and volume are directly proportional. The relationship
between factors is constant. As the temperature goes up, volume goes up too and vice
versa. This is because of the gas particles reacts to a given temperature.
4. How would you express Charles` Law in mathematical expression?
- In mathematical expression Charles’ Law is V=kT or k=V/T.

Application

What`s Possible?

1. Displaying balloon outside

- The intense sunlight increases the temperature, causing the air to expand inside the
balloon. If the balloons are not attached, they will remain suspended in the air because
the density of the gases inside the balloon decreases as the gases expand as the
temperature increases.

2. Exposing bicycle tire in the snow.

- it will make the bicycle tire flat as the cold temperature made the gas inside the tire to
deplete or shrunk in size.
