As a result of years of research, we know that too much animal fat is bad for our health. For example,
Americans eat a lot of meat and only a small amount of grains, fruit, and vegetables. Because of their
diet, they have high rates of cancer and heart disease. In Japan, in contrast, people eat large amounts of
grains and very little meat. The Japanese also have very low rates of cancer and heart disease. In fact,
the Japanese live longer than anyone else in the world. Unfortunately, when Japanese people move to
the United States, the rates of heart disease and cancer increase as their diet changes. Moreover, as
hamburgers, ice-cream, and other high-fat foods become popular in Japan, the rates of heart disease
and cancer are increasing there as well. People are also eating more meat and dairy products in their

IS THAT PORTABLE GENERATOR IN THE GARAGE GOOD ENOUGH?
It isn’t. Make no mistake about it: The power never goes out on a nice sunny day. If you lose power, it
will probably be on a cold, wet, or snowy day. With the ElectroGen automatic standby electric
generator, you won’t have to lift a finger to get the electricity running. Put it in the garage, and … well,

ElectroGen takes over. That’s right, ElectroGen begins providing power for the vital circuits in your
home within mere seconds of a power outage -automatically. That old portable just doesn’t compare. It
has to be brought out of storage and moved to where you need it. It must be fueled frequently. To use
it, you have to run extension cords to all your appliances. So if you want to avoid the walk to and from
the garage in the freezing rain to get your generator up and running, call your ElectroGen dealer today.

Passage 3
The great ship, Titanic, sailed for New York from Southampton on April 10 th, 1912. She was carrying
1316 passengers and a crew of 891. Even by modern standards, the 46,000 ton Titanic was a colossal
ship. At that time, however, she was not only the largest ship that had ever been built, but was
18
regarded as unsinkable, for she had sixteen water tight compartments. Even if two of these were
flooded, she would still be able to float. The tragic sinking of this great liner will always be
remembered, for she went down on her fist voyage with heavy loss of life.
Four days after setting out, while the Titanic was sailing across the icy waters of the North Atlantic, a
huge iceberg was suddenly spotted by a look out. After the alarm had been given, the great ship
sharply turned sharply to avoid a direct collision. The Titanic turned just in time, narrowly missing the
immense wall of ice which rose over 100 feet out of the water beside her. Suddenly, there was a slight
trembling sound from below, and the captain went down to see what had happened. The noise had
been so faint that no one thought that the ship had been damaged. Below, the captain realized to his
horror that the Titanic was sinking rapidly, for five of her sixteen water tight compartments had
already been flooded! The order to abandon ship was given and hundreds of people plunged into the
icy water. As there were not enough life boats for everybody, 1500 lives were lost.

Passage 4
ONE TO WATCH!
Essay by Jessica Bourne
I’m a big fan of films featuring the spy James Bond. I’ve got most of them on DVD. We’ve recently
bought Quantum of Solace, in which Daniel Craig plays the part of Bond. I don’t know why the film’s
got that name – but it’s a great movie, anyway.
All the actors who’ve played James Bond have been great, but Daniel Craig, who’s made lots of other
films, plays the part better than any of them. Even though he doesn’t talk very much, I think he’s the
most perfect actor for the role. He even does a few of the more dangerous things in the film himself,
instead of getting someone else to do them. I did wonder sometimes whether he’d be clever enough to
defeat the bad people – but I’m not going to tell you the ending! The actress who stars with Craig gives
a fantastic performance too – I loved all the glamorous clothes she wore!
The director probably had a hard job making this Bond film as full of action as earlier ones. But the
excitement starts right at the beginning here, with a car chase along a mountain road, and plenty of
other thrilling scenes, too – Bond leaping off tall buildings and so on. Unfortunately I found the story
difficult to follow in places, and it also seemed to be over very quickly – It lasted under two hours. I
also felt there weren’t as many jokes as in the old Bond films. And where was all the ridiculous Bond
equipment – the underwater car or exploding watch that everyone laughed at? This is a more serious,
darker Bond film, but I still really enjoyed it.
1. What is Jessica trying to do in her essay?
A. Explain what first attracted her to Bond films
B. Tell readers about the Bond DVDs she owns
C. Give a balanced view of a Bond film she has seen
D. Describe how Daniel Craig got the part of James Bond.
2. What can a reader find out from Jessica’s essay?
A. Whether Quantum of Solace is her favourite Bond film
B. What other films Daniel Craig has made
19
C. Which other actors have played James Bond
D. Whether she thinks Daniel Craig is the best James Bond
3. What does Jessica tell us about Craig in the new Bond film?
A. He performs some of the action scenes.
B. He wears some stylish clothes.
C. He is given a lot of lines to say.
D. He looks strong and fit enough to fight the criminals
4. What is one problem with the film, according to Jessica?
A. It seems a bit too long.
B. It’s sometimes hard to understand what’s happening.
C. It has too much silly technology in it.
D. It has jokes that aren’t very funny.
5. Which of these might appear in a magazine review of the new Bond film?
A. It’s full of excitement, with Bond jumping across rooftops, so don’t be disappointed by
the slow start.
B. The director wanted to move away from the last Bond film and include a bit less action.
C. I’m not sure the title tells you much… but be prepared to watch a rather different kind
of Bond movie.
D. Daniel Craig performed well as James Bond, but the main female star was
disappointing.

Passage 5
Living Tomorrow
If you want to find out what houses might look like in the future, you should visit the Living
Tomorrow exhibition. It’s a permanent exhibition near Brussels in Belgium, where you can see for
yourself how tomorrow’s technologies will integrate into our daily lives.
The house of the Future consists of a living room, bathroom, kitchen, home theatre, sleeping space and
office. Everything works via remote control, from warming up food, to authorising access to the
supermarket delivery man. The living room has touch screens which control the light, music and
windows. You might want to read, relax or just chat to friends there. However, you won’t see a TV
there. You’ll find out why when you go upstairs.
The kitchen can be whatever you want it to be. Appliances like the oven, fridge and dishwasher slide
in or out of view as needed. They even change colour automatically when you adjust the lighting. The
oven and microwave are designed to recognise different kinds of food and decide automatically how to
cook them. The only thing that doesn’t move here is the flat screen on the wall. Among other things,
you can use this screen to do your shopping easily and safely online.
Upstairs is the ‘home theatre’, with specialised acoustics and large screens. The latest 3D technology
makes watching TV a whole new experience! Next to this, in the ‘sleeping space’, you can try out a
bed that adapts to your size and shape.
The bathroom, which has water-free toilets and voice-controlled taps, is also equipped with an
‘intelligent mirror’. This acts as both a mirror and an electrically controlled screen. You can watch the
news on it, check the weather forecast or listen to music while you clean your teeth. The mirror will
even check your blood pressure and temperature, and remind you to take your medicine if necessary!

(Center City) The Metro Airport Authority (MAA) announced at a news conference today that it has
reached a long-sought agreement with Great Lakes Airways to increase flight service at both local
airports. MAA spokesman William Henry James told reporters the airline had agreed to add two new
weekly departures for and one new daily arrival from Chicago to its existing City Airport schedule,
and that County airport would see one new daily round trip to Chicago and one more daily departure
for Buffalo. Though the starting dates for the new flight service have yet to be formalized, James said
that he and Great Lakes representatives had an understanding that all new flights would be on the
airline’s schedule by the end of November or early December. Making the announcement at city hall

Passage 7
So, what did you think of “Catch Me If You Can?” Tell me your comments:
Tania: I found the movie entertaining, but I really don’t believe a teenager could pass himself off as
an airline pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer. It just doesn’t seem possible that people would believe that. He
probably passed some fraudulent checks, but the rest seems unreal. The film goes all out to shock.
Ben: Tania, if you read the book, you’d know that Abagnale really did all that stuff and more. The
book’s got a lot more detail about stuff like banking codes and how Abagnale used his knowledge to
get money, lots of money – two million dollars isn’t just beginner’s luck. The guy was a genius!
Pete: I saw the film and I read the book, but I think the film makes too much of the FBI agent who
tried to track down Abagnale. He’s not a big deal in the book. From my point of view, the book gives a
better understanding of Abagnale’s motives. That’s what really sets it parts for me.
1. Which person only saw the film?

Passage 9
Winter Driving
Winter is dangerous because it’s so difficult to know what is going to happen and accidents take place
so easily. Fog can be waiting to meet you over the top of a hill. Ice might be hiding beneath the
melting snow, waiting to send you off the road. The car coming towards you may suddenly slide
across the road.
Rule number one for driving on icy roads is to drive smoothly. Uneven movements can make a car
suddenly very difficult to control. So every time you either turn the wheel, touch the brakes, or
increase your speed, you must be as gentle and slow as possible. Imagine you are driving with a full
cup of hot coffee on the seat next to you. Drive so that you wouldn’t spill it.
Rule number two is to pay attention to what might happen. The more ice there is, the further down the
road you have to look. Test how long it takes to stop by gently braking. Remember that you may be
driving more quickly than you think. In general, allow double your normal stopping distance when the
road is wet, three times this distance on snow, and even more on ice. Try to stay in control of your car
at all times and you will avoid trouble.
1. What is the writer trying to do in the text?
A. complain about bad winter driving

A. People should avoid driving in the snow.
B. Drivers should expect problems in winter.
C. People drive too fast in winter.
D. Winter drivers should use their brakes less.
4. Why does the writer talk about a cup of coffee?
A. to explain the importance of smooth movements
B. because he thinks refreshments are important for drivers
C. because he wants drivers to be more relaxed
D. to show how it can be spilled
5. Which traffic sign shows the main idea of the text?

A. DRIVE CAREFULLY
ICE ON ROAD AHEAD

B. REDUCE SPEED NOW

FOG AHEAD

C. DRIVE CAREFULLY
ROAD REPAIRS

Passage 10
When I opened the first “Body Shop” in 1976, my only object was to earn enough to feed my children.
Today, “The Body Shop” is an international company rapidly growing all around the world. In the
years since we began I have learnt a lot. Much of what I have learnt will be found in this book, for I
believe that we, as a company, have something worth saying about how to run a successful business
without giving up what we really believe in.
It’s not a normal business book, nor is it just about my life. The message is that to succeed in business,
you have to be different. Business can be fun, a business can be run with love and it can do well. In
business, as in life, I need to enjoy myself, to have a feeling of family and to feel excited by the
unexpected. I have always wanted the people who work for “The Body Shop” to feel the same way.
Now this book sends these ideas of mine out into the world, makes them public. I’d like to think there
are no limits to our “family”, no limits to what can be done. I find that an exciting thought. I hope you
do, too.
1. What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this text?

Passage 11
Some people have complained about this year’s collection, New Writing 3, although I can’t understand
why. Surely 500 pages of original writing of this quality, for 6.99 pounds, is pretty amazing?
Fiction – both parts of novels and complete short stories – makes up most of the book. There are some
enjoyable pieces by famous writers, such as Candia McWilliam and Rose Tremain. It’s a strange fact
that the less well-known people seem to have written mainly about food. Take my advice about Jane
Harris’s Those Nails – this piece should definitely not be read just after meals. It contains some very
unpleasant scenes which could turn your stomach!
There is fine work from nineteen poets, including R.S. Thomas and John Burnside. There are pieces
from novels-in-progress by Jim Crace and Jane Rogers. Finally, there is a little non-fiction, which
includes a very funny article by Alan Rusbridger on certain newspapers, and an extraordinary piece
about herself from Ursula Owen. This is an exceptional collection and I for one can’t wait to see what
next year’s choice will include.
1. What is the writer trying to do in the text?
A. give her opinions about a new book
B. give some information about new writers
C. give some advice to writers
D. give her opinion of newspaper journalists
2. Why should somebody read the text?
A. to find out more details about something
B. to learn what next year’s collection will contain
C. to find out about Alan Rusbridger’s new novel
D. to decide whether to complain about something
3. What does the writer think of New Writing 3?
A. It’s too long.
B. It’s very amusing.
C. It’s very good.
D. It’s too serious.
4. How might you feel after reading Jane Harris’s piece?
A. hungy
B. excited
C. unhappy
D. sick
5. Which of the following describes New Writing 3?
A. Great value: two novels, poems and articles for only 6.99 pounds
B. Great value: the best of new writing for only 6.99 pounds
C. Great value: poems by Tremain, Harris and Burnside for only 6.99 pounds
D. Great value: newspapers for a whole year for only 6.99 pounds
