Sets: An Introduction
OVERVIEW…
The Foundation of Mathematics starts with the basic understanding of the ideas of the sets which
introduced by George Cantor (1845-1918). Concept of sets and set operations enable manipulation of
complicated mathematical concepts. In 1939, Nicolas Bourbaki expanded this when he said “Nowadays it is
known to be possible, logically speaking, to derive practically the whole known mathematics from a single
source, the Theory of Sets.”
The development of set theory in the second half of the 19 th century has been one of the most
important developments in the history of mathematics.
Content Standards: The learner demonstrates understanding of the sets and the real number
system.
Performance Standards: The learner is able to formulate challenging situations involving sets
and real numbers and solve these in a variety of strategies.
Learning Targets: After accomplishing all the learning activities in the module, I can;
1. Illustrates well-defined sets, subsets, universal sets, null set, cardinality sets, union and
intersection of sets and the different of two sets.

“such that”.

Roster or Listing Method

Rule or Defining Property Method
M= {counting numbers less than 10}
Set-Builder Notation
M= { x | x is counting numbers less than 1 0 }
We read this as: “the set of all x ' s such that x is counting numbers less than 10

If every member of set A is also member of set B, then A is said to be a
subset of B, written as A B (also pronounced as A is contained in B). A
Otherwise, it is not a subset ().
Equivalently, we can write B A, read as B is superset of A, B includes A
or B contains A.

CARDINALITY SETS
The number of distinct elements in the set.
|S| denotes the Cardinality of S.

UNIVERSAL SETS

A set that contains all objects or elements of A
other sets, including its own elements.
Denoted by the symbol “U”
Suppose set A is consisting of all even numbers such that A = {2, 4, 6, 8, 10 …} and set
B consist of all odd numbers such that B= {1, 3, 5, 7, 9 …}. The universal set U consist
of all natural numbers, such that, U= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 …}.
L= {r, o, a, d}, U= {s, t} and P= {b, l, u, e}. The universal set will be U= {b, l, u, e, r, o,
a, d, s, t}
Two sets A and B are said to be Equality of sets if they have precisely the same elements. Example:
A= {1, 2, 3} and B= {2, 1, 3}, therefore A=B.

The intersection contains the elements that the two sets have in common.
Denoted by the symbol ∩.
A – B is not equal to B – A
A= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5} and B= {3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8}
B – A = {6, 7, 8}
