Substance Procedure

1. PURPOSE
The purpose of this procedure is to ensure that all chemicals are stored in accordance with Heineken
specification during receiving and storage. The procedure is to provide guidance regarding safe storage
of chemicals based on their compatible storage schemes.

2. Scope
This Procedure applies to all chemicals stored on the factory and all members of the workers including
guests who work with the chemicals.

3. DEFINITIONS
Chemicals storage area: this covers all chemicals used in the laboratory and process for the
production of beer stored in any room, space or piece of furniture where chemicals are stored for
departmental, laboratory or individual use.

Combustible Liquid: A liquid having a flash point at or above 37.8° C.

Flammable Liquid:- A liquid with a flashpoint below 37.8°C and lowering a vapor pressure not more
than 275.8kPa (absolute) at 37.8°C.

Flash Point:- The lowest temperature at which a flammable liquid, within a container, gives off enough
vapor to form an ignitable mixture with air near the surface of the liquid.

Separate storage: means locating chemicals in different storage areas. A storage area is a section of
a warehouse is separated from other rooms by either by fire-resistant walls and ceilings or safety
cabinets or both.

Segregated storage: means storage of chemicals in the same storage area where the products are
separated from one another by gaps or barriers (walls, non-combustible substances of storage class)
or in safety cabinets made of non-combustible material.

Substance Procedure

6.1 Handling and storage of chemicals

6.1.1 General procedure
➢ Containers of corrosive chemicals shall be stored in trays large enough to contain spills or
leakage.
➢ Chemicals shall be stored by reactive class (i.e., flammables with flammables, oxidizers with
oxidizers).
➢ Incompatible chemicals shall be physically separated from each other.
➢ Chemicals shall be transported in an appropriate manner
➢ Spill kits shall be accessible and in proximity to chemical storage areas and storage areas shall
be designed to contain spills, including the water used for firefighting purposes.
➢ All containers shall be properly labeled with appropriate supplier labels or workplace labels.
➢ Labels shall be firmly attached to the containers and be legible.
➢ Keep chemical containers closed with properly fitted caps when not in use.
➢ Storage locations shall be equipped with fire extinguishers.
➢ In all cases, the MSDS shall be consulted for specific instruction on safe storage and
incompatibility information.
➢ Areas that have chemicals in use or stored shall be equipped with an eye-wash station or
overflow shower as required by the MSDS.
➢ Ventilation shall be used as required by the MSDS.
➢ Apply signage to the doors of chemical refrigerators stating: NO FOOD, BEVERAGE, or ICE
FOR HUMAN CONSUMPTION."
➢ Cold rooms have closed air-circulation systems that re-circulate escaped vapors within the
chamber.

Substance Procedure

6.1.2 Acid Storage

➢ Large bottles shall be stored on a low shelf or in acid cabinets.
➢ Oxidizing acids shall be segregated from organic acids, flammable and combustible materials.
➢ Acids shall be separated from caustics and from reactive metals such as sodium, magnesium
and potassium.
➢ Acids shall be segregated from chemicals which can generate toxic gases on contact such as
sodium cyanide and iron sulphide.
6.1.3 Caustic storage
➢ Caustics shall be stored away from acids.
➢ Solutions of inorganic hydroxides shall be stored in polyethylene containers.
➢ Caustics are stored below eye level.
➢ Spill control procedures and materials (neutralizers, absorbent pillows) shall be available.
6.1.4 Water Reactive Chemicals storage
➢ Water reactive chemicals are stored in a cool, dry place protected from water sources.
➢ Alkali metals (lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, and cesium) should be stored under
mineral oil, or in waterproof enclosures such as glove boxes.
➢ In case of fire, a Class D fire extinguisher is used.
