Work Instructions
10 ROUTINE PUMP PERFORMANCE MONITORING
20 Ensure all pressure gauges / transmitters required for pressure measurement
are within calibration and functioning. Visually inspect all cables and
fittings.
30 Ensure range of transducer are appropriate to the suction and discharge
pressures being measured.
40 Ensure that the flow meter used to perform the tests is within calibration
and functioning. Visually inspect all cables and fittings.
50 NOTE: Adjustment to process conditions may be required. Co-ordinate test
activity with Control Room as required.
60 Where a portable flow meter is required, visually survey system pipework
associated with the pump for which flow is to be measured, to ascertain
suitable transducer locations in accordance with flow meter operating
instructions manual.
70 Whenever possible the flow meter installation site should be as close to the
pump discharge as possible whilst remaining within the flow meter
installation guidelines.
80 This prevents possible unknown effects from passing valves, leaks, etc. from
indicating false flow rates.
90 When selecting installation sites, pipework orientation should be carefully
considered whilst remaining within the flow meter installation guidelines.
To avoid partially filled pipework, vertical downward flow should be avoided.
100 Refer to relevant flow meter manufacturer’s user manual for precise flow
meter set up procedure.
110 If pump to be tested is not of the submersible type, i.e. diesel or surface
motor driven, prepare visible area of drive shaft and apply reflective tape to
enable accurate speed measurements to be taken.
120 For general pump testing, install calibrated pressure transducers (0-20 bar
or other suitable range) in parallel with facilities' suction and discharge
pressure analogue gauges, in order that accurate pump suction and
discharge pressures can be recorded.

JOB PLAN TITLE Performance Testing: Pump

130 If pump to be tested uses pumped medium for other purposes, i.e. diesel
engine cooling or vent fan operation, then suitable additional flow
measurements must be taken to add to the measured pump flow rate.
132
140 Request operations staff to operate pump under test in accordance with the
installation operating procedures manuals. Start the pump under test.
150 Allow the pump to stabilise before beginning performance assessment.
160 Monitor pump operating parameters and request operations staff to set the
pump at its normal operating point.
170 Prior to commencing performance test check flow meter diagnostics against
flow meter manufactures recommended limits. Only if the diagnostics are
within limits, should the performance test proceed.
180 Once the pump under test has stabilised, and providing that the diagnostics
parameters remain within acceptable limits the performance test may be
carried out.
190 Using a log sheet, record speed, pressures and flows as applicable.
200 At this point any other uses/losses of the pumped medium, i.e. diesel engine
cooling flow should be measured and recorded on the log sheet.
210 Testing of the complete head/flow characteristic increases the diagnostic
capability of the test. It is recommended that measurements are acquired at
a minimum of 6 head/flow operating test points across the curve.
220 If possible it is recommended that measurements are recorded with the
pump taken ‘up and down’ its performance curve, including minimum flow
conditions if possible.
230 Periodically throughout the test, additional measurements of cooling flows
etc. must be measured and recorded.
240 If the pump is to be shut down on completion of the test then request
operations staff to shut down the pump. Ensure that indicated flow is zero.
If indicated flow is other than zero, record flow on log sheet.
250 NOTE: Data corrections should be used when there is a requirement to
compare test data with data recorded under different test conditions, i.e.
different fluid density, pump speed static lift etc.
