SKELETAL AND MUSCULAR

SYSTEM
(JOINT)
JOINT

The point at which two or more bones meet

or allowing movements
Types of Joint

1)Fixed/Immovable- This is fibrous joint where

no movement is
Types of Joint
2)Slightly movable/Cartilaginous- This provides
small range of movement joined by
Cartilage and ligament.
● It can be found vertebrae of the spine
Types of Joint
3) Freely movable/synovial- This provides a large
range of movement ball, socket and hinge joints.
● It can be found in the knee,
shoulder,hip,elbow and ankle.
The 5 Component of Synovial Joint
1) Synovial membrane - Rate is to protect the inside of the joint and provide
additional structure to keep those bones in place
● Lines the inside of the joint capsule
● Surrounds the joint capsule with synovial fluid

2) Synovial Fluid

● A lubricant that reduces friction

● Allows for smooth movement
● Reduces wear and tear
The 5 Component of Synovial Joint
3) Joint Capsule - Is made of fibrous membrane and sit just outside of the
synovial membrane

● Surround and protect the joint

● Helps to hold the bones together
● Made of fibrous membrane and a synovial membrane
4) Ligaments
● Stong, elastic fibers
● Connects bones together and holds them together
The 5 Component of Synovial Joint
5) Cartilage

● Is made of strong, flexible material

● Found at the end of bones
● Cushions the bones

6) Tendos

● Tough, fibrous tissue

● Connects muscle to the bone
● Helps the joint with stand tension
Types of Synovial Joint
1) Ball and Socket

● Provide a range of movement

● Less stable and more prone to injury
● Located at the hip and the shoulder

Example: Provides a large range of movement for action like serving in tennis

2) Hinge Joint

● Only allow movement in direction

● Located at the elbow and the knee
● More stable and less to injury
● Movement possible flexion and extension

Example: The elbows and Knees allow you to bend and straighten the arms and the legs when performing

jump shot in basketball.
