Function of private hydrant

Hi, Till now I have confusion regarding the function of the private fire hydrant which is with two hoses (2 1/2") and 4" pumper outlet, as:
01- it is mentioned in NFPA 24 that is used for delivering water to the fire department truck so the residual pressure will be 20 PSI, but I find a lot of design engineers making the
minimum residual pressure for it 100 PSI.

so I have two questions

01- what is the function of the fire hydrant.
02- how to calculate the required flow and pressure for it.

Thanks...

The pressure and flow required for a fire hydrant will depend on the fire protection strategy, AHJ requirements and whether or not the building owner wants staff to be able
to fight fires using equipment located on site (i.e. hoses in cabinets near hydrants).

You assumed correctly, the function of a fire hydrant is usually limited to supplying water to a fire truck. The 100 psi design flow is apparently from NFPA 14, being the
pressure required for fire fighting operations for a hand held nozzle and is not applicable to external fire hydrants unless these are to be used for fire fighting without the use
of a pumping appliance.

The type of hydrant to be used (whether or not it has a 4" outlet) depends entirely on the AHJ as NFPA 24 states that hydrants need to be of an approved type (i.e.
approved by the AHJ).

NFPA 1 chapter 18 gives some guidelines for hydrant design flows i.e. 20psi and 500 - 1500gpm . This is not necessarily required for a private hydrant, but it can be used
as a reference.

External hydrants are for external fire extinguishing, also they can supply fire truck. To use it you need fire brigade anyway.

20PSI is a minimum pressure, 100PSI seems to be maximum pressure that lets people to keep the hose.

To calculate it you can use Hazen Williams formula (for simultaneous flow through three hoses) or any other formula if you need to calculate 1 hose only.
