Pull Test Standard Operating Procedure
1. Pull Tests shall be in general conformance to ASTM D3689 and D3966.
2. All operations in connection with post load testing shall be carried out in accordance with the GameChange Solar
Corporate Safety Policies as stated below in order to minimize, avoid, or eliminate the exposure of people to
hazard. In particular, the following safety rules shall be followed during pull testing operations:
o Subcontractor will provide a site-specific Job Hazard Analysis (JHA)
o If a potential safety issue arises, work will stop immediately, and GCS must be notified. Work will resume
once all parties involved have been notified and a plan is developed to deal with the issue.
o Follow all relevant local, state, federal and national safety standards as well as industry standard safety
procedures.
o Wear all applicable PPE items such as hard hats, steel toe boots, safety glasses, safety vests and hearing
protection.
o Keep all test areas and walkways clear of scrap, debris, small tools, and accumulations of snow, ice,
mud, grease, oil, or other slippery substances.
o Provide timbers, blocking and cribbing materials made of quality material and in good serviceable condition
with flat surfaces and without rounded edges.
o Hydraulic jacks shall be equipped with hemispherical bearing plates or shall be in complete and firm contact
with the bearing surfaces and shall be aligned to avoid eccentric loading.
o Loads shall not be hoisted, swung, or suspended over anyone and shall be controlled by tag lines.
o The test beam(s), reaction frame, reaction posts, anchoring devices, and their connections and supports shall
be designed and approved by a qualified engineer and installed to transmit the required loads with an adequate
factor of safety.
o For tests on inclined posts, all inclined jacks, bearing plates, test beam(s), or frame members shall be firmly
fixed into place or adequately blocked to prevent slippage upon release of load.
o All reaction components shall be stable and balanced. During testing, movements of the reaction system
should be monitored to detect impending unstable conditions.
o All test beams, reaction frames, and test apparatus shall be adequately supported at all times.
o Only authorized personnel shall be permitted within the immediate test area, and only as necessary to monitor
test equipment. As best as possible, locate pumps, load cell readouts, data loggers, and test monitoring
equipment at a safe distance away from jacks, loaded beams, and their supports and connections.
o Make sure to have a spill kit onsite and ready in the event of a hydraulic leak. This can be something as
simple as a 5-gallon pale with each piece of equipment with some absorbent pads. Any and all spills are the
contractor’s responsibility and reporting must be made in the event of such an occurrence.
o Prior to leaving the test location, driven posts are to be equipped with flags or high-visibility paint or high-
visibility markings to ensure they are obvious to any personnel on the site from any angle. If the site consists
of planted farmland, flags shall be installed on poles taller than the crops to ensure visibility.
3. Locate underground utilities on the site, near pull test locations, by using the applicable one-call, 811, or dig safe
system in place in the jurisdiction of the project. All posts used for testing should be galvanized, Refusal piles can
be used without galvanization.
4. If the procedure includes 15 or more test locations, a site visit must be performed by all parties involved prior to
mobilizing equipment to the site.
5. Daily reports must be sent at the end of each working day detailing progress and any communication with
landowners. This can be in the form of an email. GCS may also request scans of data sheets as testing
progresses.
6. Record all coordinates of test locations in the field with a minimum accuracy of a cell phone GPS. If locations are
offset, note the reason and attempt to keep it within the proposed array layout pictured on the pull test procedure.
7. If the pile installer is a separate subcontractor, the pull testing subcontractor must have a representative onsite
overseeing the pile installation. The ratio of representatives to pile driving rigs should be 1:1.
8. Drive posts and wait at least three days to conduct tests as this will increase pull out resistance. Tests conducted
without a waiting period will produce lower pull out results than real world conditions. Do not drive posts in gravel
roadbeds or any roadways for testing.
9. Apply the test loads in the increments shown in the tables in the site-specific pull test procedure provided by
GameChange starting first with the vertical test, followed by the lateral test. Apply vertical loads concentric to the
post so that no eccentricity is created by the load. Apply lateral loads so that the load is directed through the vertical
axis of the post. Lateral load shall be applied at the elevation above ground indicated in the pull test procedure. Do
not apply the lateral loads at the east or west faces of the post as this will cause the post to twist about the vertical.
10. Loads shall be applied by smooth operation hydraulic equipment such as a Gradeall (e.g. Lull), hydraulic jack or
equivalent equipment with precision hydraulic control so that applied load levels are within 25 kg of the target load
levels shown on the GameChange pull test procedures. It is not permissible to apply lateral loads by driving
equipment farther from the post. Add each load increment in a continuous fashion, immediately following the
completion of movement readings for the previous load interval. During each load interval, keep the load constant
for a time interval of no less than 2 minutes and use the same time interval for all loading increments throughout
the test.
11. Equipment for applying vertical and lateral loads to the test post shall not be closer than 2 meters from the test
post.
12. Loads shall be measured by a calibrated load cell.
13. Displacements shall be measured by a calibrated micrometer or similar equipment with a resolution of 0.1 mm
or finer and. Micrometer must be capable of measuring a minimum of 50 mm. Submit calibration certificates
for load cell and micrometer to GameChange along with pictures showing the date of the last calibration and
the serial number of the “calibration stickers” on cells and gauges. It is not permissible to measure
displacements visually using a string line, tape measure, or ruler. Loads must be measured in increments as
an accumulated results e.g if the displacement at 50% of target load =2 mm and the post moves an additional
4 mm while sustaining 75% of target load then results recorded at 75% of target load is 6 mm not 4 mm.
14. Equipment for measuring vertical and lateral displacement shall be supported by a steel reference beam. The
steel reference beam shall be supported on either end by wood blocking or similar. (remove snow from the
ground if testing in winter) The supports for the reference beam shall not be closer than 1.5 meters from the
test post. The use of a post is acceptable as a reference beam.
15. Add load increments until reaching and maintaining 150% of the target load or reaching a failure load: 40 mm of
movement or greater for vertical and 25 mm or greater at grade for lateral. If the post releases during vertical
testing AND post driving equipment is still on site, redrive the post 150 mm and perform the lateral test. 72-hour
wait is not required under this instance.
16. Test all embedment depths, even if “A” test posts have enough capacity to resist 150% of the target load in both
the vertical and lateral directions.
17. If refusal is encountered when driving a test post, move to location 3 meters away and retry with a new post.
Refusal is defined as a blow count of 100 or more per 250 mm or 2 minutes of continuous driving with no
movement. If refusal is encountered again, stop driving and perform vertical and lateral pull tests per the
instructions above.
18. All test posts must be removed from each site at the end of testing unless abandoning posts in place is explicitly
approved by GameChange Solar in writing. Backfill holes made by posts with Bentonite fill, indigenous soil, or
other approved material. Holes shall be filled until they are flush with adjacent undisturbed soil.
19. All removed test posts must be checked for flare at the bottom of the post. If post flared, note on the pull test
procedure and photograph showing the post number.
20. If ground is frozen, remove soil immediately around posts to depth of frost. If frozen ground is in contact with the
test post it will result in artificially high load capacities.
21. For sites with refusal testing, at refusal test locations drive posts to maximum “B” depth of any test location on the
site. Note refusal if any and then remove posts. Loading and deflection measurement is not required. The purpose
of the test is to identify likely rate of refusal during post driving.
22. Fill out and return the “Pull Test Report Template” along with the relevant photos, data, and calibration certificates.
If the subcontractor has their own report template it must be approved by GameChange and include the pull test
procedure field sheet as an appendix.
