FINAL EXAMINATION
GE 7- Science, Technology and Society
Second Semester; SY: 2020-2021

I. IDENTIFICATION
Instruction: Read and analyze the following statements. Write your answer on the space
provided before each number.

Agricultural Plants 1. One of the most frequently cited examples of genetically modified

organisms (GMO).

Biodiversity Loss 2. Is attributable to several causes but by far the biggest culprits are habitat

destruction & overexploitation of species, driven by our exploding numbers & unsustainable

consumptions.

Transgenic Animals 3. Routinely bred to carry human genes, or mutations in specific genes,

thus allowing the study of the progression & genetic determinants of various diseases.

Nanoscience and Nanotechnology 4. The study and application of extremely small things & can

be used across all the other science fields, such as chemistry, biology, physics, materials science

& engineering.

Descending 5. Types of Nano-technology in which mechanisms & structures are miniaturized at

the Nano metric scale – from one to 100 Nano meters in size. It is the most frequent to date,

especially in electronics.

Wet nanotechnology 6. It is based on the biological systems present in an aqueous environment

– including genetic materials, membrane, enzymes and other cellular components.

Li-ion batteries 7. One of the most important and widely used secondary batteries for the energy

storage.

Nanotechnology 8. Defined as a dual – use technology, due to the fact that it brings with it both

the opportunities for progress & the development of mankind, but also may pose a serious threat

to the health & life of humans & the environment.

Habitat Destruction 9. Ever more people need ever more space.

Overexploitation10. Ever more people need ever more things.

Agricultural Intensification 11. Ever more people need ever more food.

Climate Change 12. Ever more people produce ever more climate emissions.

Chlorofluorocarbons 13. Synthetic compounds entirely of industrial origin used in a number of

applications but now largely regulated in production & release to the atmosphere by international

agreement for their ability to contribute to destruction of the ozone layer.

Environmental Awareness 14. Serve as an educational tool making people understand the

economic, aesthetic & biological importance of preserving resources & reducing or eliminating

the harmful impacts of alterations caused by man.

Disaster Risk Management 15. Application of disaster risk reduction policies & strategies to

present new disaster risk, reducing existing disaster risk & management residual risk,

contributing to the strengthening of resilience and reduction of disaster losses.

Wet Deposition 16. The sulfuric and nitric acids formed in the atmosphere fall to the ground

mixed with rain, snow, fog or hail.

Corrective Disaster Risk Management 7. Address and seek to remove and reduce disaster risks

which are already present and which need to be managed and reduced now.

1971 18. The year in which the first debate over the risks to humans of exposure to GMOs began

when a common intestinal microorganisms, E. coli was infected with DNA from a tumor-

reducing virus.

Acid Rain 19. Brad term that includes any form of precipitation with acidic components, such as

sulfuric or nitric acid that fall to the ground from the atmosphere in wet or dry forms.

Efficient Hydrogen Storage 20. Regarded as the key challenge in large-scale applications of

hydrogen energy.

II. ESSAY

Instruction: Answer the following questions substantially. Each question is worth 10 pts.

1. Explain the relationships between cells and genes.

- Genes can be discovered deep within cells, which are the basic building elements of

all living things. Genes are tiny portions of DNA that hold genetic information as

well as instructions for the production of proteins, which aid in the development and

maintenance of the body.

2. What are the ways in your daily activities that contribute to acid deposition?

Explain

- Two of my daily actions that lead to acid deposition are burning plastics and riding a

motorcycle. Human activities that result in chemical gas emissions such as sulfur and

nitrogen are the main causes of acid rain. Among the activities are factories, power

plants, and autos, which emit sulfur and nitrogen pollutants into the atmosphere.

Human activities are the primary cause of acid rain. Over the last few decades,

humans have released so many different chemicals into the air that the mix of gases in

the atmosphere has changed. The majority of sulfur dioxide and a considerable

proportion of nitrogen oxides are released when power plants burn fossil fuels like

coal to create electricity. Automobiles, trucks, and buses also release nitrogen oxides

and sulfur dioxide into the air. These compounds are the cause of acid rain. Electricity

generation without the usage of fossil fuels is a fantastic way to avoid acid rain.

Alternative energy sources such as solar and wind power can be used instead.

Renewable energy sources help to reduce acid rain since they emit significantly less

pollutants.

3. What else can be done to enrich or improve environmental education in our

schools? Write an essay.

- Environmental education in our schools should be improved and expanded. Before

we go into the best ways to improve your environmental education, it's important to

grasp the benefits of this type of training. Education's goal is to prepare students for

the world and the future. As a result, teaching students about the environment as part

of their own development is vital. We are all dependent on the environment, thus

protecting and improving it is our obligation and life mission. This is entirely new

territory in terms of environmental education. This is why many teachers use natural

elements in their classrooms or hold courses outside. Environmental education does

not end when the lessons do, but it can be tailored to prepare and inform students

about the importance of environmental preservation at least during their formal

education.
