Solve the following:

1. Determine the CN for a development on soils consisting of 30 % group A and 70 % group D.

The proposed land use is

32 % Residential which is 25 % impervious

18 % Residential which is 65 % impervious
15 % Paved Roads with curbs and storm sewers
17 % Open Land with 60 % fair cover and 40 % good cover
18 % Parking Lots, plazas, schools, etc.

Soil Groups
Group A Group D
Land use % CN product % CN product
Residential 9.6 54 518.2 22.4 85 1904
Residential 5.4 77 415.8 12.6 92 1159.2
Roads 4.5 98 441 10.5 98 1029
Fair cover 3.06 49 149.94 7.14 84 599.76
Good cover 2.04 39 79.56 4.76 80 380.8
Parking 5.4 98 529.2 12.6 98 1234.8
30 2133.9 70 6307.56

2. A 1,400,000 m² watershed is to be developed. The CN for the proposed development is 80,

and 60 % of the hydraulic length will be modified by gutters and storm drains; 30 % of the
area will be impervious. The average slope is 2 %. Compute the present and future peak
runoff from a 75 mm rainfall. The present CN is 70.
Solution:
Given,
𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 1,400,00𝑚!
𝐶𝑁 = 80
𝑀𝑜𝑑𝑖𝑓𝑖𝑒𝑑 𝑐𝑎𝑢𝑠𝑒𝑑 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 60%
𝐼𝑚𝑝𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑖𝑜𝑢𝑠 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 30%
𝑅𝑎𝑖𝑛𝑓𝑎𝑙𝑙 = 75𝑚𝑚

Using Interpolation:
!"""#$"" %!""#$""
%.'#%.!(
= )#%.!(
𝑌 = 1.2933
Present Peak Runoff:
𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 13.6: 𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑟𝑢𝑛𝑜𝑓𝑓 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ=18𝑚𝑚
𝑝𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒=0.07
𝑄=𝐶𝐼𝐴=18(0.07)(1.2933)
"
𝑄 = 1.63 𝑚 M𝑠

Future Peak Runoff:

𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡𝑎𝑏𝑙𝑒 13.6: 𝐹𝑢𝑡𝑢𝑟𝑒 𝑟𝑢𝑛𝑜𝑓𝑓 𝑑𝑒𝑝𝑡ℎ=51𝑚𝑚
𝑃𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑒𝑛𝑡 𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑑𝑖𝑠𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑟𝑔𝑒=0.09
=0.09(1.2933)(1.16)(1.40)
"
𝑄 = 5.92 𝑚 M𝑠
