3D SHAPES AND OBJECTS

FOUNDATION MATHS - GEOMETRY


AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM LEARNING OBJECTIVES

 ACMMG0091: Sort, describe and name familiar two-dimensional shapes and three-
dimensional objects in the environment.

RESOURCES REQUIRED
 2D Shapes I Know2 (2.54 minutes) captioned online video with equipment to display video
 3D Shapes I Know3 (3.18 minutes) captioned online video with equipment to display video
 Classroom examples of different shapes and objects.

LESSON OUTCOME: students can sort and describe a range of shapes and objects including
squares, circles, triangles, rectangles, spheres and cubes.

Lesson outline:
1. Quick Think activity: teacher draws a triangle, square, rectangle and circle on the board and
asks students to names the shapes. Ensure all students are familiar with these shapes.
2. Teacher plays the first video on 2D shapes to consolidate the Quick Think activity.
3. Teacher explains the difference between 2D and 3D shape, e.g. that 2D objects are flat and 3D
objects are fat.
4. To introduce 3D shapes, teacher plays the captioned video on 3D shapes.
5. When the video is finished, teacher draws a cube, sphere, cylinder and pyramid on the board.
Class discussion can be had over objects students know that are these shapes. Students can
be asked to find an object in the classroom and identify its shape, either 2D or 3D.

HOMEWORK/EXTENSION

Students can search their house for 5 3D objects of their choice and report back to the class, with
the possibility of bringing one in for a ‘show and tell’ presentation.
