3. Testing Of MV KV cables
3.1.1 Procedure
1. Ensure the correct identification of Cable. The cable is disconnected at both ends. The cable
ends are maintained adequate clearances between conductor and metallic bodies. All ends
shall be provided with separation and temporary insulated.
2. Barricade the area with proper signage and a stand-by person shall be allotted other endwith
proper communication facility.
1. Check the cable phase identification and continuity by earthing each core individually in farend
and check with the multi meter in the test end side and ensure the phases are matching with
panels terminals.
2. Each core of the cable shall be checked for correct phase marking and recorded in the test
report sheet.
1. Apply 5 kV DC Voltage using a insulation resistance megger, for a duration of one minute in
one phase (other 2 phases will be shorted and earthed) and readings are to be taken and
recorded. Insulation Resistance acceptance criteria is 1 GΩ.
2. Discharge the Cable using Earth discharge stick wearing HV Rubber gloves
1. Equipment HV leads are to be connected to cable phases by crocodile clips. Earthing shall be
connected to the cable armour
2. Apply voltage and increase gradually to RMS value of 13.5 kV at a frequency range of 0.1
Hz for duration of 30 minutes on each phase with other phases earthed and leakage current
should be noted and the cable HV withstand is checked, the kit trips automatically if the
leakage current 5mA.
3. Discharge the phase after applying HV Test and repeat the test in other two phases. All values
shall be recorded.
1. Apply 5 kV DC Voltage for a duration of one minute in one phase (other 2 phases will be
earthed) and readings are to be taken and recorded. Insulation Resistance acceptance criteria
is 1 GΩ
2. Discharge the Cable using Earth discharge stick wearing HV Rubber gloves
4. On Satisfactory completion of test and approvals all cable shall be terminated to respective
terminal. All terminal bolts shall be tightened with adequate torque requirement
5. Proper housekeeping shall be done and all covers shall be closed. Barricading and signage
shall be removed and closeout all permits.
