A. Development of the Lesson

Concept Note 4:

ROCKS

Petrology – study of rocks

Characteristics of a rock
 Color
 Texture
 Appearances
 Hardness
 Brittleness

Types of Rocks
1. Igneous
 Formed by the cooling and crystallization of hot, molten rock material called magma.
 Igneous means “formed by fire”
 It makes up 95% of the crust.
A. Types of Igneous Rocks
a. Intrusive – solidified magma
b. Extrusive – solidified lava

2. Sedimentary Rocks
 Derived from the word sedimentation means “settling”
 Accumulation of materials
 Formed due to compaction and lithification

Types of Sedimentary Rocks

a. Clastic - Rocks that formed from sediment fragments of rocks
b. Chemical - Rocks formed when dissolved minerals drop out of solution
c. Organic - Rocks that are formed from the remains of once living organisms
3. Metamorphic Rocks
 Formed under conditions of heat and pressure
 rocks that form from the transformation of pre-existing rocks

A. Types of Metamorphic Rocks

a. Foliated – with band
b. Non- foliated – without band

ROCK CYCLE

B. Analysis
Directions: Answer the question in 3-5 sentences.

C. Abstraction
Rocks and minerals are all around us! They help us to develop new technologies and
are used in our everyday lives. Our use of rocks and minerals includes as building
material, cosmetics, cars, roads, and appliances. In order maintain a healthy lifestyle
and strengthen the body, humans need to consume minerals daily. Rocks and minerals
play a valuable role in natural systems such as providing habitat like the cliffs
D. Application/Assessment
Directions: Identify the term described in each item. Write your answer on the
blank provided below.

___________1. The study of rocks

___________2. The color of the powder and mineral
___________3. The appearance of the mineral surface in reflected light.
___________4. The weight of a mineral compared to a weight of an equal
volume of water.
___________5. The resistance of the mineral that can scratch a diamond
___________6. The tendency of minerals to break along planes of weak bonding
___________7. The only mineral that can scratch a diamond
___________8. The building blocks of rocks
___________9. These are rocks that have undergone solidification from a molten
condition.
___________10. The study of minerals
