Lesson Plan in:Earth and Life Science

I. Topic: Earth’s internal structure (CN #3)

II. Objectives: At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

a. Identify and differentiate the different layers of the Earth’s interior;

b. Determine the properties of each layer of the earth’s interior;
c. Enumerate the different layers of Earth’s interior; and
d. Create a simple model of Earth showing its different layers.

ACTIVITY

FACT CHECK

Determine whether the following HEADLINES are LEGIT NEWS or FAKE NEWS.

1. The shape of the earth is oblate spheroid. LEGIT NEWS

2. The earth is the fourth planet from the sun. FAKE NEWS
3. The earth is tilted by 25.3 degrees Celsius. FAKE NEWS
4. Around 71% of the earth is covered with water. LEGIT NEWS
5. The approximate age of the earth is 4.6 million years old. FAKE NEWS

ABSTRACTION

FIVE CONCENTRIC LAYERS OF THE EARTH

1. Crust
2. Mantle
a. Upper mantle
b. Lower mantle
3. Outer Core
4. Inner Core
5. Atmosphere

INNER CORE

- Has 2,600 km in diameter and consists of solid iron and nickel alloy.
- Has an approximate temperature of 5,000 degrees Celsius. This is 250 percent hotter than the next
layer which is the outer core.

OUTER CORE

- Has approximate temperature of 2,000 degrees Celsius and has a thickness of 250 km.
- Made up of molten iron and nickel alloy.

The boundary between inner and outer core is called “lehmann discontinuity”. It is named after Inge
Lehmann who is a Danish Seismologist who discovered that the outer core is molten and the inner core is
solid.
MANTLE

o The mantle is the intermediate zone between the crust and the core and consists mostly of
solid rocks.
o The mantle makes up the 80% of the Earth’s volume and 68% of Earth’s mass.
o It has an approximate thickness of 2,900 km with a temperature of ranging from 15,000
degrees Celsius to 30,000 degrees Celsius.
o The mantle is mainly made up of silicate rocks specifically the elements, Silicon, Iron, Oxygen
and Magnesium
o The mantle is SOLID since both s waves and p waves can pass through it.

REGIONS OF THE MANTLE

1. UPPER MANTLE- Has thickness of 670 km

2. TRANSITION ZONE
3. LOWER MANTLE- Has thickness of 2,230 km

In the mantle, we can find the layer called Asthenosphere or the low-velocity zone. It is a soft, weak, top
layer of the upper mantle that is made up of molten materials. It has a thickness of 180 km and has a
temperature ranging from 300 degrees Celsius to 800 degrees Celsius.

The boundary between the outer core and lower mantle is called “Gutenberg Discontinuity” named after
Beno Gutenberg who is an American-German Seismologist.

The boundary between upper mantle and crust is called “Mohorovicic Discontinuity” named after Andrija
Mohovicic who is a Croatian Meteorologist and Seismologist.

CRUST

- Is the thinnest outermost, rocky layer of the earth.

TWO PARTS OF THE CRUST

1. Oceanic Crust
o Has a thickness of 7 to 10 kilometers
o Found under ocean floors and is made up of dense rocks such as basalt
2. Continental Crust
o Has a thickness of 35 to 40 kilometers
o Mainly made up of the elements sodium, oxygen, silicon, aluminium, potassium, and calcium.
o The Continental Crust is usually found under land masses and is made up of less dense rocks
such as granite.

ASSESSMENT

Guide questions:

1. What are the layers of the earth interior?

2. What do you call the boundaries in each layer?
3. What are the properties of each layer?

ASSIGNMENT

Have an advance reading about Rocks and Minerals.
