Core Assignment 3

Part 1:
Grade: Second Grade

Subject: Mathematics

Standard: 2.CA.1 Add and subtract fluently within 100

Part 2:
Assessment Method: Performance Assessment

Task: Students will be given a story problem that involves adding or subtracting. The student will have to
show their work to demonstrate how they found the answer.

Question: Jane has 30 cookies. She gave 13 cookies to her students, then she bakes 12 more cookies.
How many cookies does Jane have now?

Instructions: Students should show their work and explain how they solved the story problem.

Part 5:
Group 1: Reteach

Justification: These students need to be taught the lesson with deeper explanations and in
smaller groups because they exhibited little to no understanding of solving the problem,
explaining, and showing their work.

Group 2: Practice

Justification: These students should receive practice problems because they showed that they
understand parts of the lesson and just need to fine tune some of the requirements. These
students might just need a reminder of expectations to get full credit.

• E.g. students may have gotten the problem correct but did not write their answer in
a complete sentence.
• E.g. students may have written the correct work but did not give a written response
or a written answer.
Group 3: Challenge Group

Justification: This group exhibited near complete understanding of the mathematical concept,
showed proper work, and wrote their answer with correct formatting.

Further Instruction 1: For the challenge group, they will get more complex problems that are multistep
combining more than three required calculations, and some that have numbers over 100.

Justification: These students will have a more of a challenge requiring them to take more steps
to get their answers. With more steps it will challenge students by making them pay more attention to
the small details that will make a big difference in the end.

Further Instruction 2: For the students who probably understand but need more practice, they will work
in pairs, to solve problems. They will stick to the same type of problems, like done in the assessment.
The students will collaborate to make sure they meet all requirements and are taking each step in the
right direction.

Justification: Students will work in pairs so that they can realize and fix their mistakes as they
are happening. If one student does not get the problem, correct then their partner can help guide them
in the correct direction.

Further Instruction 3: For the students who need the lesson retaught they will work on their iPads
individually and with the teacher to relearn the lesson. The students will be able to learn at their own
pace and stop to ask questions when they need to.

Justification: This allows students to learn at their own pace and get more direct one on one
help. Students will also be able walk through as many problems as they need to until they understand.

Follow-up Assessment 1: For the challenge group they will have to solve a puzzle, by doing problems. If
the students get the problems correct, they will solve the puzzle.

Justification: These students have had enough practice that they should be able to solve all
problems to get the puzzle correct and use problem solving skills in doing so.

Follow-up Assessment 2: The group that needed more practice will redo the assessment done
previously with different numbers.

Justification: This will be done to check to see if they are clearly understanding all parts of the
question and that they are ready to move onto more challenging questions.

Follow-up Assessment 3: The students that needed to be retaught the lesson will be assessed on only
the mathematical concept. (Will only be required to show their work and give the correct answer in
number form). They will be given problems with only numbers and addition and subtraction signs.

Justification: This assessment is done this way because these students need to first understand
the mathematical operations first before doing a story problem.
