1. Answer ALL questions
2. Write down the answers on hardcopies, take pictures of (or scan)
them, and then insert them in the appropriate positions under each
question. Finally make a single file (in a single PDF format).
3. Send the file (your answer script) by email at
Instructions (ete322.eee@gmail.com) as an attached file. No google link is
acceptable!
4. Also upload a copy to google classroom where this problems
statements are posted.

Q1. Answer the following: [CO1]

(a) Discuss the concepts/techniques to increase both coverage and capacity in cellular mobile 7
communication network without using new spectra. Also explain their limitation (if any) and the
mitigation technique with necessary diagram.
6

6
(b) Explain the basic concept of the spread-spectrum technique. Also discuss the reason why open and
closed loop power control schemes are essential for the CDMA system.
(c) Briefly explain a typical mobile communication network’s architecture with the aid of appropriate
functional block diagram.
(d) Briefly discuss various nonlinear effects in optical fiber and also explain how these effects can be
minimized.
(e)

Q2. Answer the following: [CO2]

(a) Show that signal-to-interference ratio, , where, N is the number of cells in a

cluster, is the path loss gradient, and is the number of interfering cells.
(b) Calculate the coverage of a BTS if the transmitted power, receiver sensitivity, reference point loss,
gain of the transmitting antenna, and path loss gradient are 1kW, -80dBm, 20dB, 3.0dB, and 3
respectively.
(c) Prepare a look-up table for (2, 1, 3) convolutional code, where the polynomials for v1 and v2 are
(Octal conversion of any one appropriate digit of your SID) and (0, 1, 1), respectively. Also encode
the bit sequence of 1001 for (2, 1, 3) convolutional code using Trellis diagram.
(d) Sketch the waveform of the MSK modulation schemes for the bit sequence of 11010010. Assume
one carrier is 1.5 times higher than the other.
(e) Calculate the threshold power for stimulated Brillouin scattering for a 10-km fiber link operating at
1550nm and having a loss of 0.2dB/km. Assume that Aeff=50µm2 and gB=5.5x10-11m/W at 1550nm..
5
(f) A fiber-optic transmission link was specially designed to keep the receiving end power
higher than the receiver sensitivity. However, during installation of the link, a pre-amplifier 6
is inserted to keep the receiving end power at a level of 0.0dBm. If the transmitted power is
10.0dBm, gain of the post-amplifier is 17dB, link attenuation is 0.4dB/km and the pre-
amplifier gain is 3dB, then calculate the length of the transmission link.
