Q1. (a) Assume that it takes 8.00 minutes to fill a 35.0 gal gasoline tank.
(1 U.S. gal = 231 cubic inches; 1 inch = 0.0254 meter)
Calculate the rate at which the tank is filled

(i) in gallons per second, and (2 marks)

(ii) in cubic meters per second. (3 marks)

(b) The air frictional force F on a vehicle depends on the velocity v of the vehicle,
the density ρ of air and the cross-sectional area A of the vehicle. By using
dimensional analysis, derive an expression which relates F to v, ρ and A.
(7 marks)

(c) Vectors P = (6.00, 120°) and Q = (7.50, 9.00) lie in an x-y plane. Calculate

(i) 2 P • Q , and (6 marks)

(ii) P × 3 Q in unit-vector notation. (4 marks)

Q2. (a) A toy gun can launch a ball straight up with an initial velocity of 3.20 m/s.
Assume that there is no air friction, determine

(i) the maximum height the ball will go, (2 marks)

(ii) the time taken by the ball to reach its highest point, and (2 marks)

(iii) the time when the ball returns to the level from which it started.
(1 mark)

(b) A car is driven along a street at the speed limit of 35.0 miles per hour (mph) and
50.0 m before reaching a traffic light, which is becoming yellow. The car is
accelerated to cross the traffic light within the 3.00 seconds it takes to turn red.
Calculate the car’s speed (in mph) as it crosses the traffic light. Assume that the
acceleration is constant and that there is no air resistance.
(Given that 1 mph = 0.447 m/s) (5 marks)

Q3. (a) Figure 3.1 shows an adventurous archaeologist stops to rest at the middle of the
rope between the cliffs. He has a mass of 90.0 kg and the rope will break if the
tension in it exceeds 2.50 × 104 N.

Figure 3.1

(i) If the angle θ is 10.0°, calculate the tension in the rope. (3 marks)

(ii) Find the smallest value the angle θ can have if the rope is not to break.

(b) Block A with mass 200 kg and block B with mass 50.0 kg are connected by a
light string over a pulley that is frictionless and of negligible mass. Block A will
move 6.00 m down the incline from rest. The coefficient of kinetic friction
between block A and the incline is μk = 0.200 and the angle of the incline is 30.0°
from horizontal. Determine
