GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT
SIKKIM
SIKKIM IS STATE OF INDIA, LOCATED IN THE NORTHEASTERN
PART OF THE INDIA, IN THE EASTERN HIMALAYAS. IT IS ONE OF
THE SMALLEST STATES IN INDIA. SIKKIM IS BORDERED BY
THE TIBET AUTONOMOUS REGION OF CHINA TO THE NORTH
AND NORTHEAST, BY BHUTAN TO THE SOUTHEAST, BY THE
INDIAN STATE OF WEST BENGAL TO THE SOUTH, AND
BY NEPAL TO THE WEST. THE CAPITAL IS GANGTOK, IN THE
SOUTHEASTERN PART OF THE STATE. SIKKIM BECAME
A PROTECTORATE OF INDIA IN 1950 AND AN INDIAN STATE IN
1975. ITS SMALL SIZE NOTWITHSTANDING, SIKKIM IS OF GREAT
POLITICAL AND STRATEGIC IMPORTANCE FOR INDIA BECAUSE
OF ITS LOCATION ALONG SEVERAL INTERNATIONAL
BOUNDARIES.
BIODIVERSITY IN SIKKIM: FLORA AND FAUNA

Covering just 0.22% of the geographical area of India, Sikkim shows great
biological diversity. The vast altitudinal variation of elevations from around 300
m to 8598 m within very short distances is responsible for the varied
ecoregions of the State.

1 NATIONAL PARK, 7 WILDLIFE SANCTUARIES AND 1 CONSERVATION
RESERVE THAT COVERS 30.77 PER CENT OF THE TOTAL GEOGRAPHICAL
AREA OF THE STATE.
FORESTS OF SIKKIM
Forest is one of the richest natural resources of Sikkim. With
luxuriant forest abounding in all part of state, Forestry has been the
major land use in the State and 82.31% of the total geographical area
of the State is under the administrative control of the State Forest
Department.
CLIMATE OF SIKKIM
• The temperature plays a vital role while deciding when to visit a destination. When it
comes to Sikkim, due to its geographical location, the temperature varies from region to
region. Sikkim is divided into four parts and the altitude variation leads to changes in
Sikkim temperature. From subtropical in the south to tundra in the north, the Sikkim
weather alters from place to place. 
• Most of the inhabited regions of the state experience a temperature climate with Sikkim
temperature not crossing 28°C in summer. The average annual temperature in Sikkim
remains around 18°C, making it a perfect holiday destination. The soothing aura and low
temperature of Sikkim, make it a perfect getaway to get a respite from summers and
enjoy snowfall as well.

• The beauty of Sikkim is incomparable and rivers add to the value of the
scenic view. Here’s the list of most gorgeous rivers in Sikkim that you
must visit.
• The topography also doesn't allow for construction of large irrigation channels and for
use of large harvesting machinery. The farming in Sikkim is mostly done on subsistence
level. Nearly one third of the cultivation is of the shifting (jhum) type. Canal irrigation is
quite low at around 12–13%.
• The Sikkim State of NE Region is endowed with natural features of Biomass, solar, wind
and hydro- power to generate energy from renewable sources of energy.
AGRICULTURE
• Agriculture in Sikkim seems to be the basis of the socio-cultural
pattern of the territory. In Sikkim, the aborigines of the land were
nomads who spent their time hunting for food. But gradually,
when the Bhutias came and settled in Sikkim they started
practicing a semi-pastoral form of farming.
SOIL AND MINERAL
RESOURCES OF SIKKIM
• The important mineral resources of the State are copper-lead-zinc and silver,
reported in Bhotang, Rangpo and Dikchu in East Sikkim districts.
• Soils of Sikkim have been classified into red loam and red and yellow soils.
They are generally dark brown in colour on the surface and reddish in sub
surface. The depth of the soil varies, being deep in the valleys and shallow on
the hills.
MAJOR STEPS TAKEN BY SIKKIM FOR
ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION AND CONVERSION
• It banned the use of packaged drinking water in government
offices and government events. Second, it banned the use of
Styrofoam and thermocol disposable plates and cutlery in the
entire state in a move to cut down toxic plastic pollution and
tackle its ever-increasing garbage problem.
