FIELD STUDY 1 LEARNING EPISODE

The School Environment

FS 1 1
Spark Your Interest
This Episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on a school
environment that promotes leaning and development.

TARGET Your Intended Learning Outcome

At the end of this Episode, I must be able to determine the characteristics of a school
environment that is safe, secure, and is supportive of learning (PPST 2.1.1).

REVISIT the Learning Essentials

1. A physical environment conducive for learning is one that has consistent practices
that:
 keep the school safe, clean, orderly and free from distraction;
 maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
 address the physical, social and psychological needs of the students.

2. Display boards can be powerful in communicating information about the learning

environment. They help in building and establishing the school culture. These boards
become one way for everyone to learn about the vision-mission, goals, and values
that the school upholds.

3. As a basic part of the school's visual environment, display boards have four general
purposes:
 Decorative- They offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetics. They
set the social and psychological atmosphere of the school.
 Motivational- They encourage students to perform better and have greater
confidence. An example would be the display of students' outputs that
show that each output is recognized and valued. The bulletin boards help
celebrate the learners' growth and progress.
 Informational- They are used as a strategy to readily disseminate
information.
 Instructional- They move students to respond and participate through
interactive displays. They get students to think about and communicate
their learning
4. The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays includes effective
communication, attractiveness, balance, unity, interactivity, legibility, correctness and
durability.

1. Visit a school. Look into facilities and support learning areas in the campus, then in the
classroom.
2. Observe and use the checklist as you move around the school premises.
3. Analyze your gathered data about the school environment.
5. Reflect on the characteristics of a school environment that promotes learning.
6. Present your idea of a good school environment through any of these:

a) Descriptive paragraph b) Photo essay

c) Sketch or drawing d) Poem, song or rap

OBSERVE

As you move round the campus, observations forms are provided for you to document
your observations. It is advised that you read the entire worksheet before proceeding to the
school site. A good understanding of the activities and tasks to be accomplished in the
activity sheets will yield better learning results.

1. Would you like to teach in the school environment you just observed?
Why? Why not?

Yes, because it would be close to home. And I believe the school has a positive attitude
toward its learners.

2. What kind of school campus is conducive to learning?

A school with minimal pollution and clean campus premises is considered to be

extremely conducive to learning.

3. What kind of classroom is conducive to learning?

The classroom should always be clean, ventilated, and well-lit, as well as big enough
even for activities to allow students to move around freely. A conducive learning
environment fosters learning, allows for growth, recognizes accomplishments as a job
well done, and allows for emotional and intellectual engagement. Peers in their age
groups communicate with one another, and criticism and new ideas are welcomed. An
atmosphere in which a new lesson is learnt, comprehended, and accepted as having a
beneficial influence on their future life.

4. In the future, how can you accomplish your answer in number 3?

I need to be extremely careful while arranging items and classroom materials,

and I need to be prepared for every circumstance in the classroom. I must keep in mind
that students' attention spans are limited, and I must be aware of how to deal with
various types of behavior. With the support of everyone in the class, I am capable of
achieving anything. Willpower and determination alone will not be adequate until the
educational system, teachers and staff, parents, and pupils themselves provide
assistance. I'm just hoping for the best since I know I'll be heading in that route.
However, I'm praying for the best. The mind of a child is complicated. As a teacher, I
believe that every child deserves a bright future. It is our responsibility to help them
excel us, to lead them every step of the way so that they may improve, and that their
progress will be reflected in the growth of society.

5. Write your additional learning and insight here.

It's critical to realize and accept that no class has everyone learning at the same
pace or at the same level. Each child is entirely unique, and their multiple intelligences
vary considerably and tend to behave on their own.

Activity 1.2 Observing bulletin board display

Resource Teacher: _________________ Teacher’s Signature: ____________ School: _________

Grade/Year Level: _________________ Subject Area: __________________ Date: ___________

The display board, or what we more commonly refer to as bulletin board, is one of the
most readily available and versatile learning resources.
To achieve the Intended Learning Outcomes, work your way through these steps:
1. Examine for bulletin board display. Include samples of those found at the entrance,
lobby, hallways, and classrooms.
2. Pick one and evaluate the display.
3. Propose enhancement to make the display more effective.

OBSERVE

As you look around and examine board displays, use the observation guide and
forms provided for you to document your observations.

An Observation Guide for BOARD DISPLAYS

Read the following carefully before you observe.
1. Go around the school and examine the board displays. How many board displays do you see?

2. Where are the display boards found? Are they in places where target viewers can see them?

3. What are the displays about? What key messages do they convey? What images and colors
do you see? How are the pieces of information and images arranged?

4. What materials were used in making the displays? Are borders used?

5. Do you notice some errors? (misspelled words, grammar inconsistencies and the like)

6. Are the messages clear and easily understood?

7. Think about what got your attention. Why did it get your attention?

8. Take a photos of the display boards (if allowed).

Based on the questions on the observation guide, write your observation report:

San Vicente Elementary School was in Matag-ob, Leyte's Brgy. San Vicente. Outside
their rooms, there is only one display board, which is located near to the hand washing
facility at the entrance gate. However, inside their classrooms, there are numerous board
displays with charts containing subject content posted on the board display, particularly at
the back wall where they can be easily seen upon entering the classroom, as well as bulletin
boards in the Principal's office that display pictures and names of the teachers. The
organizational structure of the school is also accessible. Cellophane was used to cover and
protect the board display. In terms of information and accuracy, the borders and backdrop
color utilized in the display board were OK, but I think it lacked appeal because the colors
were not consistent.
From among the board displays that you saw, pick the one that you got most interested in.

My Board Display Lay-out

ANALYZE

What do you think was the purpose of the display?

A display board is an essential component of any institute, school, or classroom. The display
board was read by students, teachers, parents, and visitors to the institute. The information on the
bulletin board offers the initial impression of the school. The aim of the display board in such situation, in
my opinion, is to grab the viewer's attention and explain what was done and what was learnt.

Did the board display design reflect the like/interests of its target audience? Why? Why not?

Yes, the board display design reflects to the likes and interests of its target audience.

Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand? Why? Why not?

Yes! The wording chosen was clear, uncomplicated, and appropriate for the intended audience.

Was the board display effective? Why? Why not?

Yes! Although the color that were used was not that attractive, but still correctness and
appropriateness did no fail to convey message to the target audience.

What suggestion can you make?

Although the colors chosen weren't quite as attractive, their accuracy and appropriateness
ensured that the message was conveyed to the intended audience.
Based on your suggestions, propose an enhanced version of the display board. Use the form
below.

REFLECT

1. Name at least five skills that a teacher should have to be able to come up with effective board
displays. Elaborate on why each skill is need.

a. Innovative: I feel that even though the theme for bulletin board display is old, the instructor
should attempt new things. The instructor should be able to come up with something fresh, new,
unusual, and intriguing to keep the kids' attention.

b. Resourceful: Not all schools supply everything needed for bulletin board setup. As a result,
despite a shortage of resources, a teacher should be able to handle effectively.

c. Creativity: There are several tools accessible on the Internet to help teachers improve their
creativity. The bulletin board may readily catch the attention and eyes of the pupils by being
creative. Which of the skills you named in # 1 do you already have? Recall your past experiences
in making board displays. How do you practice these skills?

d. Tech-Equipped: It's essential to stay current with the materials accessible on the Internet.
Fellow instructors share a lot of valuable information on the internet. The trick is to choose
materials that are relevant for your intended audience.

e. Organization: The bulletin board's content and layout should be carefully considered. It's
important to find a balance between photos and text.

2. Which skills do you still need to develop? What concrete steps will you take on how you can
improve on or acquire these skills?

Among the traits I've listed above, I consider myself to be organized, resourceful, and
tech-savvy. If I don’t have a lot of materials and resources to work with,   I make it a point to
make the best of what I have. I n terms of technology, I'm learning how to assess if the
accessible internet materials are beneficial and acceptable for the pupils to ensure that what I
display in the bulletin board is also discussed in the classroom.
