FIELD STUDY LEARNING

The Flexible Learning

1 EPISODE

FS 1 1
Environment

This Episode 1 provides an opportunity for students to examine and reflect on a school environment
that promotes learning and development.

 At the end of this episode, I must be able to determine the characteristics of a school
environment that is safe, secure, and supportive of learning (PPST 2.1.1).

1. A physical environment conducive to learning has consistent practices that:

 keep the school safe, clean, orderly, and free from distraction;
 maintain facilities that provide challenging activities; and
 address the physical, social, and psychological needs of the students.
2. Display boards can be powerful in communicating information about the learning environment. They
help in building and establishing the school culture. These boards become one way for everyone to learn
about the vision-mission, goals, and values that the school upholds.
3. As a basic part of the school’s visual environment, display boards have four general purposes:
 Decorative – they offer visual stimulation and appeal to aesthetics. They set the social and
psychological atmosphere of the school.
 Motivational – they encourage students to perform better and have greater confidence. An
example would be the display of students’ outputs that show that each output is recognized and
valued. The bulletin boards help celebrate the learners’ growth and progress.
 Informational – they are used as a strategy to readily disseminate information.
 Instructional – they move students to respond and participate through interactive displays. They
get students to think about and communicate their learning.

Learning Episode 1: The School Environment Field Study 1Page 1

4. The set of criteria for evaluating bulletin board displays includes effective communication,
attractiveness, balance, unity, interactivity, legibility, correctness, and durability.

My Board Display Layout

Backdrop

What do you think was the purpose of the board display?

The purpose of board display is to disseminate important information such as announcement
about certain activities, events, memorandum, and highlighting student’s achievements. In
addition, it is also an excellent method to make the students stop and take a look on
educational posters it shows. Display boards are important in a school because it serves as a
medium of information dissemination, adds appeal to the school setting because of its aesthetic
purposes, and encourages students to strive in terms of their education.

Did the board display design reflect the likes/interests of its target audience? Why? Why not?

Learning Episode 1: The School Environment Field Study 1Page 10

Board display usually incorporates what is “in” in the school current time. That said, it captures
the students interest and make them read the information provided.

Was the language used clear and simple for the target audience to understand? Why? Why not?
Since display boards should be look and read upon, it is a must to use a language that can be
understood by the majority of the students. You do not want a display board that is too hard or
complicated to understand because students won’t spend time trying to understand something
they can just pass through hallways and classroom.

Was the board display effective? Why? Why not?

Board display is an effective form of information dissemination and communication with the
students since it serves its purpose which are the following: to inform, entertain, and motivate.

What suggestions can you make?

To maximize the positive result we can attain through board display, and for it serve its purpose, I
suggest that teachers or anyone who is in-charge of designing it to be mindful of its format. Look
carefully if the design you’re planning to incorporate suitable to both topic and audience. Correct usage
of grammar must also be observed, as well as conciseness, so that the readers will immediately
understand the message it conveys. Additionally, you might consider making the text font a little bit
bigger, so that the students will not have a hard time reading the information posted.
