Masthead
The masthead is the name of the magazine and it has a bold font, positioned at the top so it
is visible when stacked on shelves. It is conventionally the largest text on the page and
spans the whole width of the page; the name will often signify the genre over-lapped by the
main image on an established brand.

The masthead of Empire magazine is a large red font is to catch your attention
The font in red fits in with the style of the magazine as it looks like the flashing lights
advertising the theater. This neon sign style of font is very eye catching.The black
background makes the image look real and because of the black background the text stands
out. The mast head is conventional as it is at the top of the page, similar to many other
magqazines.
Main image
The main image uses direct addresses and this is more engaging to the audience, as it is
more eye- catching to the audience because it makes them feel more engaged with the
magazine. The main cover star is relevant to the genre of the magazine.
The image is centered, and the face is never overlapped by the text.The image and
background takes up the whole cover. Mise en scene “which means in the scene” is present
on the cover, it includes lighting costumes, makeup and hair setting peoples movement
+expression, this creates meaning and engagement for the audience.

Empire magazine is solely based on Edgar Wright who is a director of film. Edgar is also
surrounded with all the actresses and actors that he has directed over the years. Also, the
mood of the lighting gives him a creepy presence. The main image is eye-catching as the
costume is metallic, which reflects the light. The futuristic woman is set in front of strip lights
which look like they could be a tunnel leading somewhere in a sci-fi movie. She is set central
to the page and your eye is drawn to her.

Positioning Statement: The Positioning Statement is


small and positioned near the masthead and it tells
you the genre. It positions the magazine in the
marketplace and usually appeals to the audience like
a tagline for the magazine.
This issue of Empire magazine’s Positioning
Statement Is ‘The world's best movie magazine.’ The
Empire is saying they are better than everyone else
and this is persuasive because they are saying that
you can’t get any better.

Main Cover line: the main cover on Empire magazine


is Edgar Wright The Cover line is positioned on or
close to the main image and is bigger than the other
cover line linked to main image anchors it (fixes the
meaning) It’s to inform the audience what is in the
magazine layout- larger bolder different colour font first. The main cover on Empire
magazine is Edgar Wright and this will appeal more to the audience than smaller text
underneath to give more information as he is well known.

Subline: The Sub-line is the text underneath main cover line smaller text, it also
provides more information about the article.
The sub line in this magazine is the white text underneath Edgar Wright.
Barcode:The Bar Code is small plus positioned at the outer edge.

The barcode on Empire magazine is halfway up on the left and it tells the audience that it
cost’s £4:99.

Price and issue information:The price and issue information is usually displayed on the
front cover of the magazine under the masthead.

The issue information on Empire magazine is at the top of the page on the red ‘M’ it says
October 2021 and it is in wight font to make is stand out

Puff and Incentive:The Puff looks like a sticker and draws the audience's attention to. It
usually has an incentive that gives the audience an extra reason to buy the
magazine or a special cover line.The puff on Empire magazine is on the top right
in yellow and pink, and it has a cover line inside the puff. The large black writing
inside stands out on the yellow behind it, and the pink also stands out against
the yellow and catches the audience’s eye.

Buzzword: Words like ‘exclusive’ plus ‘free’ are in the magazine which creates
and designs a buzz and has something that appeals to the audience.

My magazine has no conventional Buzz words, but this magazine has the words
“2 great mags for £6.49” is a good offer that would make the audience's eye to
think they are getting a good deal.

Skyline:- The position that runs across the magazine above the masthead. Usually has a
cover line or positioning statement.

The sky line on Empire magazine is on the top of the magazine in white and yellow colours.
It is in a blown up font with key information and this is there to entice the audience to buy the
magazine and an indication of what is in the magazine.

House style: This is a brand style and will reflect genre plus target audience, font and colour
scheme.

In Empire magazine, the word Empire is always across the top. There is always one
background colour and always an image in the middle.

Fonts - The masthead is consistent throughout, most of Empire magazine, it is in Bold, and
clear to see, and it is also the same size.
