Good day, everyone!

In this video, we are going to talk about one of the functions of communication,
social interaction!

For the definition, social interaction is the that uses communication to socialize or interact with other
people.

This function of communication results to the development and maintaining of social relationships,
bonds, and intimacy with others.

In other words, if the purpose of your communication with a person or group of people is to simply
interact with them, the function of communication being applied is social interaction.

Some situations where you use the said function of communication are inviting your friend to eat lunch
together, greeting your teacher “good morning”, appreciating the haircut or hairstyle of your partner,
and encouraging your classmate to continue giving his/her best and not lose hope.

Now, we will give a situation where communication is used for social interaction.

Face-to-face classes will now resume and you will finally meet your classmates in the physical classroom
after almost two years. You jumped on the school bus and greeted the driver “Good afternoon, Kuya”.

Then, you sat on a seat next to your classmate and said “Hi, wassup? You look great as ever and I am so
happy to see you!” and continued on your conversation to catch up with each other.

Reaching the school, you got off the bus and went to your assigned classroom. Your teacher is not in the
classroom yet but you saw an unfamiliar female classmate, probably a transferee. You approached her
and said “Hi! I am Jabriel. Nice to meet you! Welcome to BRafeNHS!”.

Then your teacher enters the classroom and the whole class greeted “Good afternoon, Teacher!”. The
class then proceeds to all the school tasks for the day.

But before going home, you invited your classmates to a short bonding by asking “Hey, do you guys
want to grab some street foods before going home?”. Then you and your classmates chitchat while you
eat and everyone went home safely.

For the final part of this video, here are some tips to use communication for social interaction
effectively.

First, use the appropriate type of language depending on whom you are conversing with to not sound
rude and disrespectful.

If the person is younger or in the same age bracket as you, then you may use informal language. But if
the person is older such as your teacher, then you must use formal language and honorifics like “Ma’am
or Sir”.

Second, make sure that your facial expression, tone of voice, and other verbal and nonverbal elements
of communication match what you are saying.

You must maintain your smiling face or at least your usual face, maintain eye contact, and do not show
some gestures that may be interpreted you are getting bored or are uninterested.
Finally, learn how to start, keep, and end a conversation. You can start a conversation by talking about
the weather, complimenting the person, or simply saying “Hi or good morning”.

To keep a conversation, you may talk about trends, your common interests, or asking each other about
what they did, feel, or like.

Finally, you can end a conversation politely by thanking for the nice conversation and saying that are
going to do something or promising to continue the conversation some other time.

And that is all for this video. Thank you so much for watching!
