Manila Bay Beach Nourishment Project

Respond to the following discussion questions:

 What can you say about the controversial Manila Bay Beach Nourishment Project?
Another controversial issue is the case of the Manila Bay Beach Nourishment Project. It's
an artificial beach in Manila, the Philippines, built by the beach nutrition process. DENR's Manila
Bay rehabilitation project includes a dolomite "beach." The DENR said the project for beach
feeding is more than just esthetics. The department is planning to cover around 500 meters of
the shoreline of Manila Bay with crushed Cebu dolomite with a budget of P359 million from
President Rodrigo Duterte's contingency funds. He said it was a strategy to support environment-
friendly behavior among Philippines in the hope of white sand inspiring people and attracting
local and international people. DENR said beach feeding is "not a permanent remedy" for
erosion fighting, and it enhances Manila Bay's beach width. But according to hicap “Dolomite
contains high amount of heavy metals such as aluminum, lead and mercury, which would
contribute to the pollution and acidity of Manila Bay.” That’s why it is not to the marine life on
the bay, and we all know that it can easily to wash-out if there typhoons come in our country.
Oceana said “Under the Fisheries Code, Local Government Code and the Environmental Impact
Assessment System Act, government agencies are required to undergo Environmental Impact
Study process and Environmental Compliance Certificate for this kind of project,” And lastly at
this time the funds that use on artificial white sand is bust be needed to fight against the corona
virus or give it to all Filipino suffered on hunger during this pandemic, we don’t need this kind of
project now we need solution in our current problem which is the virus.

 If you are the members of the DENR, what would be your proposal for the rehabilitation of
Manila Bay and help boost local and international tourism? Discuss in detail.
Manila bay has a good view, especially at sunset, but the water has a bad smell, so if I’m
a member of DENR, I would propose cleaning the water of Manila Bay to remove the bad smell
on bay walk. But there’s an existing project to clean the Manila Bay. It’s called "Battle for Manila
Bay" to stress how the water body has become heavily contaminated. According to Greenpeace,
environmental nonprofit pollution covers the shorelines of the bay, overflows its waves, and
frequently causes injury to marine creatures. It is called an "unflushed toilet" by
environmentalists. Through cleaning the water of manila, it may bring back the life of the bay. By
cleaning the water of the bay, it can boot our tourism because if the water is clean it will not
produce a bad smell and it is the one problem for the tourists that visit our country, especially
for the tourists who want to see the beautiful sunset there. And also, people can swim there
without getting harm to their health and if this happens, it looks like South beach in Florida.
