Context:
Every product that is available in the market has its own distinct packaging and
labelling. Packaging and labelling are important because they add to the marketability
of the product. In order to succeed in the market, your product must be competitive.
Most companies invest time, effort, and resources on their product’s packaging and
labelling, to ensure that they are designed appropriately and that they are attractive and
distinct.
Functions of Packaging
1. Promoting and selling the product - it is attractive, colorful and visually appealing
packages. A well design package is a powerful selling device because it helps the
product stand out from its competitors.
2. 2. Defining product identity - used to promote an image such as prestige,
convenience or status.
3. Providing information - it gives customer useful information on direction for using
the product, its contents, product guarantees and potential hazards.
4. Expressing Customers’ Needs - when designing packages, companies analyze
customer lifestyles and create packaging that meets their needs for size and
convenience.
5. Ensure safe use - proper packaging helps to eliminate potential injuries or misuse
of a product. Child-resistant packaging is special packaging used to reduce the
risk of children ingesting hazardous materials. It is designed to resist tampering
by young children.
6. Protect the product - it must be protected during shipping, storage and display.
Purpose of Labelling
1. Providing the necessary information about the product such as its contents,
features, instructions as to its usage and manufacturing information.
2. Promoting the product with the use of branding, and attractive, colorful marks.
Marketing Strategies
1. Print Media - the finished products can be marketed in print advertisements such as
newsmakers, magazines, brochures, and flyers.
2. Product display - the finished products can be displayed and sold through exhibits,
markets and bazaars.
3. Internet marketing - this is promoting the finished products through the internet, e-
mail, and social networking sites.
With today’s technology, marketing of products is easily done by both the sellers
and buyers who also make the products. More and more entrepreneurs use technology
to market their product since it is more economical than having an actual store.
Through it requires a gadget such as a computer or a smartphone and internet
connection, marketing is more convenient and hassle-free with the use of technology.
