Reges Oceanfront Resort to defy Governor Christie’s veto and declare their beaches

Reges Oceanfront Resort supports smoke-free beaches

Wildwood Crest, N.J. – April 12, 2022 – Reges Oceanfront Resort declared a ban on smoking
on their beaches beginning as soon as May 1.
This decision by the resort comes in defiance of Gov. Chris Christies’ veto on the legislative ban
on smoking on beaches, waterfronts and public parks.
“We make this move in an effort to keep our resort as family friendly as possible,” said Anthony
Mollica, president and general manager of Reges for the last 34 years. “Our ban will also help to
reduce the waste on the beach and keep it as beautiful as possible for all of our guests for years to
come.”
New York City Parks has also banned smoking in their outdoor spaces, doing so rather
successfully. When making their decision, they argued that studies suggested that sitting 3 feet
away from a smoker outdoors can expose an individual to the same level of secondhand smoke
as if they were sitting indoors with a smoker.
“The last thing we want to do is expose any of our guests to harmful toxins. We want each
guest’s stay at Reges to be as relaxing as possible, without the potential harm from secondhand
smoke,” said Mollica. “Ultimately, this wasn’t a spur of the moment decision.”
Reports from across the country and over the years support the resort in its decision. One such
report was released in 2005 by the California Air Resources Board (ARB), which evaluated the
monitoring of the outdoor exposure levels to secondhand smoke on the health of California
residents. The ARB used the report to adopt a regulatory amendment that identified secondhand
smoke as a toxic air contaminant.
“All we want is to make sure everyone has a good time at our resort,” said Mollica. “And to us,
that starts with banning smoking on our beaches.”
