Population and Sampling Method

I.Most Essential Learning Competencies

 Describes adequately research design for quantitative research, data gathering instrument, sample,
data collection and analysis procedures, and prepares data gathering instrument.

II. Facts

Population. It is any complete group (i.e., people, sales territories, stores, etc.) sharing a common set of
characteristics. It can be defined as including all people or items with the characteristic one wish to
understand and draw inferences about them.
Sample. It is a subset or a part of a larger population. It is “a smaller (but hopefully representative) collection
of units from a population used to determine truths about that population” (Creswell, 2015).
Two types of sampling method
1. Probability sampling – is a random selection of the samples. Each sample or element of the
population has an equal chance of selection.
2. Non-probability – is when a researcher cannot employ random selection. It is based on researcher’s
choice, population that is accessible and available.

Random sampling method (such as simple random sample or stratified random sample) is a form of
probability sampling. It is important to understand the different sampling methods used in research. The
method used should be mentioned clearly in the research paper.
Sampling is a statistical procedure that is concerned with the selection of certain individual observation
from the target population. It helps in making statistical inferences about the population. Sampling design
refers to the technique or procedure used by the researcher for selecting items as samples from the
population or universe.

Types of Probability Sampling

1. Simple random sample. Every member of the population has a known and equal chance of being
selected.
2. Stratified random sample. Population is divided into mutually exclusive groups such as age groups
and random samples are drawn from each group.
3. Cluster (area) sample. The population is divided into mutually exclusive groups such as blocks, and
the researcher draws a sample of the group to interview.
4. Systematic sampling is where every case after a random selection is selected. For example, if
surveying a sample of consumers, every fifth 8 consumer may be selected from your sample. The
advantage of this sampling technique is its simplicity.

Types of Non-probability Sampling

1. Purposive sampling – employs a procedure in which samples are chosen for a special purpose.
2. Snowball sampling – the researcher identifies a key informant about a research of interest and then
ask that respondent to refer or identify another respondent who can participate in the study.

3. Quota sampling is gathering a representative sample from a group based on certain characteristics of
the population chosen by the researcher.
4. Convenience sampling is a method of selecting samples that are available and are capable of
participating in a research study on a current issue.

III. Activities

Activity 1 Identification
Direction. Identify the population and sample from the given statement by underlining it. Single line for
population and double line for sample.

1. There are 138 Grade 12 students at Mallorca National High School. Using simple random sampling, the
researcher will have 85 respondents.
2. We have 100 male and 100 female in the resort, using quota sampling we have 100 respondents, 25% male
and 75% female.
3. 300 out of 400 undergraduate students from three Dutch universities who volunteer for your psychology
research study.
4. A high school population composed of 30% senior and 70% junior high school students with a sample size of
80% of the total population.
5. There are 300 senior high school students and the number of students who attended the online class are 95
which will be used as the respondents.

Activity 2 Fill in the Blanks

Direction. Write the correct answer on the space provided.

6. _____________________________ is a technique that has a multiplier effect, that is, one person is
asked to refer the researcher to another respondent and so on.
7. _____________________________ is the common sampling technique in which very member of the
population has a known and equal chance of being selected.
8. _____________________________ is used if the researcher cannot conduct random sampling. It is
based on researcher’s choice, population that is accessible and available.
9. _____________________________ is a formal process of choosing the correct subgroup called a
sample from a population to participate in a research study.

10. ____________________________ is used when the target respondents in a research study is spread
across a geographical location. In this method, the population is divided into mutually exclusive
groups.

Activity 3. Sampling Design

Direction. Create your own simple research design based on the given topic. Write your answer on the space
provided.
