What is New?
Data is defined as pieces of information or facts known by people in this world. It
is measured, collected, reported and analyzed whereupon it can be visualized using
graphs, images, or other analysis tools. Research data are raw materials of research
investigations that the result from measurements or observations is recorded after an
experimentation or study.
What is it?
Types of Data
Qualitative data are merely descriptive observations gathered from sensory
experience such as looks, smell, feels, tastes, and color. It is the information about
qualities; information that can’t actually be measured.
Other examples: present or absent, yes or no, negative or positive,
Quantitative data are measurable, numerical observations gathered from
experiments.
Examples. age, height, weight, distance, speed, and test score.
Learning Activity
Read the following statements then answer if each statement is either Qualitative
data or Quantitative data. Write QL if it is Qualitative data and write QN if it is
quantitative data.

1.____________ The candy was sour.

2. ____________ The bug is 5 cm long.
3.____________ The roses are red.
4. ____________ The mass of the beaker is 122 grams.
5. ____________ The slug is slimy.
6. ____________ She is 150 cm tall.
7. ____________ The organic soap is highly effective.
8. ____________ The car speed is 120km/hr.
9._____________ The is a presence of bacteria in the water.

Methods of Data Collection
Researchers are concerned with analyzing and solving problems. These problems
come in many forms, can have common features and often include numerical
information. It is therefore important that researchers should be competent in the use of
a range of quantitative methods. Data is required in order to perform quantitative
analyses.

What is it?

In quantitative research, data can be gathered from either a primary or a

secondary source. Primary data refers to data that has been collected directly through
first-hand experience. On the other hand, secondary data are those which have already
been collected by someone else and which have through some statistical analysis.
Primary data may be collected through observation method, interview method,
questionnaires and experiments. Observation method is a method under which data
from the field is collected with the help of observation by the observer going to the field.
Interview method involves presentation of oral-verbal stimuli and reply in terms of oral-
verbal responses, the interviewer asks questions to respondent. Questionnaire is sent
to the persons concerned with a request to answer the questions and return the
questionnaire. Questionnaire consists of a number or questions printed in a definite
order on a form. Experiment is a controlled study in which the researcher attempts to
understand the cause-and effect relationships.

meaning.
