Activity Title : Conducting Survey, Experiments and Observations
Learning Target : Differentiate survey from experiments or observations.

Survey
Survey is defined as the act of examining a process or questioning a selected sample of individuals to
obtain data about a service, product, or process. Data collection surveys collect information from a
targeted group of people about their opinions, behavior, or knowledge. In doing a survey, the
researcher must understand the right mode of inquiry for establishing an inference whether in a large
group of people or from a small number of people in a group. The very aim of conducting a survey is
to present and explain the actual experiences of a certain population.
Example: Survey on the most preferred learning modalities of you school in the new normal.
Experimental Research
Experimental research is a study that strictly adheres to a scientific research design. It includes a
hypothesis, a variable that can be manipulated by the researcher, and variables that can be
measured, calculated and compared. Most importantly, experimental research is completed in a
controlled environment. The researcher collects data and results will either support or reject the
hypothesis. This method of research is referred to a hypothesis testing or a deductive research
method. .Example: A study on the effect of online games on the students’ performance.
Observation
An observation is a data collection method, by which you gather knowledge of the researched
phenomenon through making observations of the phenomena, as and when it occurs. You should aim
to focus your observations on human behavior. It may take place in natural settings and involve the
researcher taking lengthy and descriptive notes of what is happening. Example: Observation on the
behavior of customers amidst the Covid-19 Pandemic.
Activity: SEE THE DIFFERENCE. Identify whether the following characteristics being mentioned in
the statement is a Survey, Experiment or Observation.
____________1. It involves techniques of gathering data of a variable under the study from the
respondents of the population.
___________2. It has a systematic procedure to test the hypothesis.
___________3. The researcher manipulates one of the variables and tries to determine its influence.
___________4. The data is usually obtained from the standardized procedure like asking the
respondents for information through a questionnaire.
___________5.The goal is to record what you see and hear on the ordinary daily life of people.
___________6.It is an affair of systematic and deliberate study through an eye.
___________7. It can be carried out through questionnaires, interviews and documentation review.
___________8. It collects and analyze the data from the responses of samples.
___________9.The researcher can manipulate the variable involve in the study.
__________10. It allows the researcher to study people in their “natural setting”

Activity Title : Conducting Survey, Experiments and Observations
Learning Target : Identify the steps in conducting survey, experiments or observations

Survey research means collecting information about a group of people by asking them questions and
analyzing the results. To conduct an effective survey, follow these six steps:
1. Determine who will participate in the survey
2. Decide the type of survey (mail, online, or in-person)
3. Design the survey questions and layout
4. Distribute the survey
5. Analyze the responses
6. Write up the results
Experiments. The Scientific Method is a series of organized steps to which an experiment is done.
The Scientific Method helps you plan, predict, research, conclude and maybe even publish your
findings. The Scientific Method will make your experiment more organized, easy to interpret and learn
from.
The Steps of the Scientific Method are:
1) Pose a Testable Question.
2) Conduct Background Research.
3) State your Hypothesis.
4) Design Experiment.
5) Perform your Experiment.
6) Collect Data.
7) Draw Conclusions.
8) Publish Findings (optional).

How to Conduct Observations for Research

1. Identify Objective
2. Establish Recording Method
3. Develop Questions and Techniques
4. Observe and Take Notes
5. Analyze Behaviors and Inferences
Separate the difference between what you observed (which are factual behaviors) and why what you
observed happened.

Activity. STEP ME IN!

Directions: Arrange the following into series of steps based on the methods used. Put a series of
numbers (1-5 or so on) on the space provided.

A. Experiment
________Lino wanted to know if a bean plant will grow more quickly outside or inside.
_______ He constructed his hypothesis on his study.
________Lino performed a 3- week experiment.
________Lino concluded the answer to his question to find out a conclusive answer to the question.
_______ He gathered data and relevant information on his study for three-weeks.

B. Observation
________Miss Morales wanted to know how their customers interact with employees.
_______ She decided that note taking is the most common method.
________ Miss Morales developed her objective and determine specific questions in understanding
what she trying to learn.
_______ She analyzed the factual behavior and happenings of the observation.
_______ She visited, observe and take down notes on the behaviors, actions without disrupting the
environment.

C. Survey
______ Mr. Alejandro wanted to know the percentage of Senior High students who has access to the
internet and other learning modalities for his study.
_____ He decided to use a survey via Google forms as an online tool for an easier access.
_____ He created the questionnaire and encoded it on the platform.
_____ He sent the link of the survey to the students.
_____ He analyzed the result based on the responses of the students.
____ He collected all the data from the platform.

A survey is one of the best tools to understand the people’s attitudes, feelings or choices on a certain
issue. There are varied ways in conducting a survey. Each has its advantages and disadvantages that
will fit on your methods and purpose.
A. Face to face structured interview.-It involves the person himself/herself conducting the
survey.
B. Telephone Survey. It uses telephone or cellular phones to ask individual a particular
questions.
C. Paper-and-Pencil Survey- a traditional method wherein the respondents must be present in
the administration of the survey.
D. Mail survey- Questionnaires are mailed to individual who are given a sufficient time to answer
the information being asked.
Activity. Let’s Survey!
Direction: Read the given situations below. Choose one situation and conduct a survey based on the
chosen situation. Please be guided on the things you have learned on the previous lessons about
designing the questionnaire in your survey.Choose the one that can be applicable to you and safe for
you at the same time.

You want to construct a survey that shows what are the

effects of Pandemic in a Filipino family.
