CLIMATOLOGY Thermal Comfort

what is THERMAL COMFORT ;

THERMAL COMFORT is the outcome of a well-balanced combination of build-

ing systems adapted to both the location of the building as well as the type
of activity performed within the building or the room of the building. One of
the first steps to consider is the design of an efficient building envelope.

FACTORS OF THERMAL COMFORT;

Environmental factors
Air temperature. This is the temperature of the air surrounding the body. ...
Radiant temperature. Thermal radiation is the heat that radiates from a
warm object. ...
Air velocity. ...
Humidity. ...
Clothing insulation. ...
Work rate/metabolic heat.

PHYSIOLOGICAL ASPECTS ;

Thermo-physiological comfort is concerned with the heat balance of the

body during various levels of activity. In most environments, body tempera-
ture will be above that of the environment and in order to maintain the heat
balance between the body and its surroundings, the body generates heat
through its metabolism.

BODY HEAT BALANCE

The core temperature of the body remains steady at around 36.5–37.5 °C

(or 97.7–99.5 °F). In the process of ATP production by cells throughout the
body, approximately 60 percent of the energy produced is in the form of
heat used to maintain body temperature.

COMFORT RANGE

Monitor and maintain ideal home humidity and temperature: The EPA rec-
ommends indoor humidity stays between 30% and 60%. Comfortable room
temperatures are generally considered to be around 68° Fahrenheit. At
night, some sleep experts recommend keeping a bedroom around 65°F

COMFORT CHARTS

Comfort charts are the practical application of concept of effective tem-

perature. ... The chart is prepared showing percentage of people feeling
comfort at different effective temperatures. From comfort chart, engineers
find the effective temperature for a point corresponding to a particular
DBT,WBT and RH.

ACHEIVING THERMAL COMFORT;

Humans generally feel comfortable between temperatures of 22 °C to 27 °C
and a relative humidity of 40% to 60%. first cool the air to 14 °C (this re-
moves some of the water from the air), and then heat the air to 24 °C.

4 ways thermal comfort can be achieved through good design, construction,

and maintenance
• Use a HVAC system that regulates MRT. ...
• Minimise leakage. ...
• Design and build for some occupant control. ...
• Maintain the thermal environment, and make changes as necessary.
