CONSTRUCTION METHODOLOGY

DRAINAGE BLANKET – {GSB}

4.02 SCOPE:
The work shall consist of laying and compacting well-graded materials on prepared sub-grade
in accordance with the requirements of the specification. The material shall be laid in one layer
as directed by the Engineer in accordance with the lines, grades and cross sections shown on
the drawing.

MATERIAL:
The material used for the work shall be a crushed Stone upon the the grading required and
shall conform to table 400-1 of MORTH (5th Revision) Specification (Grading v) . The
material shall be free from organic or other deleterious constituents.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMEN:

The water absorbtion value of the coarsed aggeregate shall be determined as per IS:2386(Part –
3);if the value is greater than 2 %, the wet aggregate impact value (AIV) test shall be carriedout
in accordence with IS : 5640) .
Physical requirements for material of Granular Sub-base As per MORTH 5 th revision Table No.
400-2.
1. Aggregate Impact value (AIV) IS:2386 (part-4) or Max. 40%
IS:5640
2. Liquid limit IS:2720 (part-5) Max. 25%
3. Plasticity Index IS:2720 (part-5) Max. 06%
4. CBR Value at 98% of MDD IS:2720 (part-16) Min. 30%

BLENDING / PREPARE MIXTURE :

Mixing shall be done mechanically by the mix – in – place method, the equipment used for the
operation shall be a rotavator or similar approved equipment capable of mixing the material to
the desired degree and as instructed by the engineer.

WORK METHODOLOGY:
The Granular sub-base material of grading specified in the contract shall be spread on the
prepared sub-grade with the help of motor-grader of adequate capacity. Moisture content of the
material shall be checked and suitably adjusted by sprinkling additional water from the water
tanker suitable for applying water uniformly and at controlled quantities to variable widths. At
the time of compaction, the moisture content shall be 1 % above or 2% below the optimum

moisture content. Immediately thereafter, rolling shall start. Vibratory roller of minimum 10 to
12 tones capacity shall be used for compaction. Rolling shall start at the lower edge and
proceed towards the upper edge. Each pass of the roller shall uniformly overlap not less than

1/3 of the track made in the preceding pass. The speed of the roller shall not exceed 5 km per
hour. The required compaction shall be 98% of maximum dry density achieved with Modified
Proctor Test.

TESTS FOR GRANULAR SUB-BASE

 Gradation - As required by MORTH (5 th Revision) Specification

- One test per 400m3

 Plasticity index - One test per 400m3

(L.L: 25 Max., PI- 6 Max.)

 Field Density - One test per 1000 m2

98% minimum.

 Moisture content
before compaction - One test per 400 m3
(+)1% to (-) 2% of OMC
 Deleterious Constituents - As Required
 C.B.R (4 days soaked) - As Required
minimum 30% at 98% compaction
 Water Absorption value
of coarse Aggregate - 2% maximum.
