MEANING AND FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT (Explained in Taglish by Sir RDS)

Ang sarap isipin na darating ang araw na mula sa pagiging isang simpleng estudyante magiging managers
tayo ng restaurant, sa banko, sa mga korporasyon o sa sarili nating negosyo. Pero bago natin marating
yun kailangan muna natin malaman kung ano ba ang “management” at ano ang mga tasks na ginagawa
ng isang “manager.”

Ito ang isa pinakaunang specialized subject mo as ABM student. Nagtataka kk aba kung bakit? Kasi lahat
ng mga susunood mong pa-aaralan ay iikot sa mga functions ng isang manager, finance manager,
accounting manager, marketing manaer, Chief Executive Officer at marami pang iba. Kung baga ito ang
basics. Ready ka na?

DEFINITION : Management is the process of coordinating and overseeing the work performance of
individuals working together in organizations, so that they could effectively and efficiently accomplish
their chosen aims or goals.

So explain natin in detail (1) “process” – ibig sabihin merong systematic na procedure or method na
kailangan sundin. It is not as easy n autos lang ng utos, or upo lang sa table, o titingin tingin lang sa mga
empleyado. May proseso paano maghire ng employee, paano gumawa ng produkto, paano i-motivate
ang empleyado, paano mag-operate ang negosyo, at halos lahat ng actions within the business. Eh sir
bakit may process? Kasi without process, hindi magiging maayos ang flow ng operations and
mmagkakaroon ng inconsistencies. Halimbawa na lang sap ag-hire ng emplyedo, kung hindi dadaan sa
examinnations, interview at character reference hindi mo mapipili ang competent na empleyado para sa
trabaho.

(2) “coordinating and overseeing the work performance of individuals working together” – from the
term management, “man” , it is the most important business resource, without manpower kahit lhi-tech
ang machinery at equipment mo, kahit strategic ang location mo, balewala ang lahat if hindi mo ma-
supervise at mamotivate ang manpower mo.A good manager is good at handling people. The success of
the company depends on the people working on it.

Halimbawa sa isang fastfood chain, ung yung mga crew ay sumesweldo ng tama at nasa oras, hindi
overworked, nararamdaman na mahalaga siya at masaya sya, magiging masaya ang pag-take nya ng
order, babatiin ka nya pagbukas ng pinto, at magiging friendly sya. Sab nga mmadedefine mo ang
manager na naka-duty sa pamamagitan ng mga empleyado na nagtratrabaho doon.

(3) “effectively and efficiently accomplish their chosen aims or goals.” – sumusuod tayo sa process ng
management bakit? Syempre para ma-achieve ng company ang goals nito. Effectively ibig sabihin
naexecute ng tama at naattain ang goals. Halimbawa, target sales of P100,000 para buwan na ito, kapag
nakamit ito ng kompanya, very good effective ang management. Pag sinabi naman na efficient, nakamit
ang objective with minimal wastages. Halimbawa, nakamit nga ng kompanya ang target sales na
P100,000 pero ang taas ng bill ng kuryente, ang daming defective products, ang taas ng overtime pay, o
ang daming complaints, ibig sabihin effective nga pero hindi efficient ang manager.
FUNCTIONS OF MANAGEMENT

Mayroong limang functions of management and basically as a manager ito ang magiging guide natin in
managing the business.

(1) PLANNING – Involves determining the organization’s goal for performance objectives, defining
strategic actions that must be done to accomplish them, and developing coordination and integration
activities.

Sab inga bago ka sumabak sa giyera alamin mom una sino ang kalaban mo, ilan ang tauhan mo, kaya ba
ng mga kagamitan at armas mo, yung sitwasyon ba ay papabor sa iyo at marami pang ibang
konsiderasyon. Same as with manging a business, halimbawa for a particular dday in arestaurant, bago
ka mag-open kailangan identify mo muna kung enough ba yung number ng people nan aka-duty
(considering their productivity and situation at hand, halimbawa Valentine’s Day so maraming tao) if
enough, well and good pero kung hindi ano plano mo? You also have to check sa products mo, enough
ba yung materials mo? Di ka ba ma out of stock? (considering not only the availability but also yung
quality, baka marami kang stock expired naman or low quality) If okay, well and good, if hindi, ano plano
mo? You also need to check your equipment and machines. Baka mamaya hindi functional or for repair
it could affect productivity. If okay, well and good, if hindi what are your actions. You are checking
everything kasi meron kang target, for example, sales target, if di mo i-check yung people, products and
equipment it may hinder your business from achieving it.

(2) ORGANIZING - Assigning tasks, setting aside funds, and bring harmonious relations among the
individuals and work groups or teams in the organization.

So after mo mag set ng obejccetives and goals, and ma-chheck lahat ng dapat icheck before operating,
sa you will organize. Yung alin po Sir? First, you need to communicate your goals to your team, dapat
alam nila yun para alam nila kung ano ang dapat maachieve nila, For example P25,000 sales for the day,
eh may 5 kang cashier so ang target nila ay tig-P5000 or higher. Then give them the materials in order
for them to perform the job, a working cash register, available products, baryang panukli at kung ano pa
kailangan nila.

(3) STAFFING – Indicates filling in the different job positions in the organization’s structure.

Sa staffing pumapasok ang hiring process. Parang audition sa The Voice at the end of the day ang
pinakamagaling na singer ang nanalo. Same as with this, may positions to be filled up, kapag napili mo
ang pinakamagaling it will benefit your company. Kaya may exam (to test knowledge), preliminary
interview (to check soft skills, confident, friendly), final interview. medical examination (to check if
physically healthy and fit) and character reference (to check attitude and character of the applicant. The
success of the organization depends on its people.

(4) LEADING – entails influencing or motivating subordinates to do their best so that they would be able
to help the organization’s endeavor to attain their set goals.
Dito pumapasok ang role mo as motivator. Di naman pwedeng after mo bigyan ng task yung employee
mo yun na yun. Diyan pumapasok yung kahit simpleng kinukumusta mo sila, at some time tinutulungan
mo sila at yung pagbibigay ng incentives. Sa halimbawa kanina, kapag naachieve ng cashier ang higit pa
sa P5,000 na sales meron syang certificate of achievement, or meron syang libreng coke as simple as
that na pwedeng magdrive sa kanila to perform better. “Shadow of the Leader” if you are happy,

(5) CONTROLLING – Involves evaluating and, if necessary, correcting the performance of the individuals
or work groups or teams to ensure that they are all working toward the previously set goals and plans of
the organization.

Dito yung ineevaluate mo ang nagiging performance ng operations mo by supervising everything. Ito
yung moment na patayo tayo na lang ang manager at titingin tingin. (so ibig sabihin marami na dapat sya
nagawa) If may nakikita syang threat in achieving the goal might as well i-correct nya na yun
immediately. If everything is working as planned naman, kailangan nya imotivate pa ang employee to
maintain their smooth operations.

At the end of the day if na-achieve ang goal, ikaw bilang manager must recognize ano ba ang mga
ginawa nyo para maging successful ang operations para sa susunod uulitin nyo ulit ito. If hindi naman
naachieve, identify mo mga dahilan bakit? After mo ma-identify yun, you will go back again to planning.

Di masamang magkamali, ang mahalaga, ikaw a sa manager you constantly search to improve your
management skills.
