Concepts of Community and its Sociological Concepts

Background Information for Learners

What is a Community ???

A community is a place where one lives, works, and

plays. A community denotes a group of people
occupying a definite territory, living together with
families, and the neighborhood. A community is a
social group with some degree of "we feeling," living in
a given area.Community is a set of primary and
secondary groups in which the individual carries out important life function.

Aggarwal (2006) furnishes us with several definitions of community:

• Clusters of individual lives make-up communities, societies, and
cultures. To understand some of the complexeties, complications, and
confusions within the life of judt one member of a community are to
gain insights into the collective (Coles and Knowles, 2001);
• For Bill Lee (1992), community is simply a group of people who have
something in common;
• For the Greeks, it means “fellowship” that is, a group of people who
come together fo mutual support and to fulfill their basics needs.
• Boothroyd (1990) sees community as “a human system of more than
two people in which the members interact personally overtime, in
which behavior and activity are guided by collectively-involved norms

or collective decisions, and from which members may fell freely
secede”.
• It is “a collection of people who have become aware of some problem or
some broad goal, who have gone through a process of learning about
themselves and their environment and have formulated a group
objective” (Roberts, 1979).

The Four Traditions

1. In the first tradition, the complete community, collectivities based in
size from villages to metropolises are analyzed holistically.

Example: Las pinas City relate among themselves and to other people
living in Metro Manila.

2. The second tradition, the community of limited liability focuses on

neighborhoods and similar areas of larger communities; it considers
the sentiments and motivations of people living in the neighborhood.

Example: “Tagalog Community”, the “Ilocano Community”, and other

community for those coming from Bicol, Pampanga, Cebu and other
Philippine provinces.

3. The third tradition of the community as society examines various

groups for whom prestige or moral worth or both are in some way
important.

Example: “Philippine Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism”, in the

field of engineering, we have the “Philippine Society of Mechanical
Engineers”, lawyers have “Integrated Bar of the Philippines”.

4. If the attention is directed to communes and to certain organizations

which have a sense of community, then its study falls under the
personal community. The basis here is one of the shared interests in
which prestige or moral worth, if an issue at all, is of minor
importance.

Example: Knights of Columbus, Camera Club of the Philippines,

Batangas Mountaineering Society.

The Nature of Community
Not only is the concept of a community a "construct" (model), it is a
"sociological construct.". It is a set of interactions, human behaviors that
have meaning, and expectations between its members. Not just action, but
actions based on shared expectations, values and beliefs, and meanings
between individuals. To understand how a community operates, and how it
changes, it is necessary to learn a little bit about sociology the science. The
mobiliser is an applied scientist; social scientist. While a pure scientist is
interested in how things work, the applied scientist is interested in taking
that knowledge and getting useful results.
The Four perspectives
1. Systems perspective. From a systems perspective, community, just
like a church, is similar to a living creature, made up of different parts
that represent individual functions, activities, each operating within
specific boundaries to meet the needs of the community.

Example: the Department of Health focuses on the prevention and

treatment of diseases and injuries, the Department of Education
ensures quality education, the Bureau of Revenue collects proper
taxes.

2. Social perspectives. This perspective describes the social and

political networks that connect individuals, organizations, and its
leaders. A clear understanding of the different networks is crucial in
planning how to engage in community activities.
3. Virtual Perspectives. Today, individuals rely heavily on computer-
mediated communications. Virtual communities are social groups or
groups with common interest that interact in an organized fashion
using the Internet.
4. Individual Perspectives. Individuals who are living in a community
have their unique sense of membership. Some may even have a sense
of belonging to more than one community.
