गद्ाांश (काांप्रप्रहें सन), ककसी किए गए टे क्‍सट के अर्थ के ननर्ाथण की प्रकिया है । गद्ाांश का
उद्दे श्य ककसी उम्र्ीिवार की ककसी प्रवषय को सर्झने, जानकारी का अनुर्ान लगाने,
व्याख्या करने या ककसी ननष्कषथ पर पहुुँचने, र्ूल‍याांकन करने और किर एक प्रणालीगत
तरीके से प्रश्‍न का उत्‍तर िे ने की क्षर्ता है ।

प्रत्येक प्रश्न र्ें उत्तर के रूप र्ें चार प्रवकलप होते हैं । हालाांकक, प्रश्‍न चुनौतीपूणथ होते हैं और
उन्हें गद्ाांश की ठीक सतही सर्झ से अनिक र्ूलयाांकन की आवश्यकता होती है । इसनलए,
उम्र्ीिवार को प्रश्नों पर ध्यान केंकित करने और तिनुसार सही प्रवकलप चुनने की
आवश्यकता है ।

परीक्षा के दृप्रिकोण से गद्ाांश का र्हत्व

सही पररप्रेक्ष्य र्ें उम्र्ीिवार के ननम्ननलखित कौशल का र्ूलयाांकन वस्तुननष्ठ गद्ाांश के

अांतगथत प्रवनिन्न प्रश्नों के र्ाध्यर् से ककया जाता है :
❖ किए गए गद्ाांश की सार्ग्री को सर्झना
❖ प्रवचारों को सार्ांजस्यपूणथ ढां ग से प्रस्तुत करने की क्षर्ता
❖ टे क्‍सट र्ें ननकहत सांिेश का अनुर्ान लगाना
❖ ककसी सूचना का अनुर्ान लगाना या र्ूलयाांकन करना

परीक्षा र्ें पूांछे जाने वाले गद्ाांशों की प्रकृ नत

सार्ान्‍यत: ननम्ननलखित प्रकार के गद्ाांश परीक्षा र्ें पूछे जाते हैं :

❖ वणथनात्र्क: ऐसे गद्ाांश ककसी घटना या यात्रा आकि का बहुत व्यवखस्र्त तरीके से
वणथन करते हैं । खजससे कक पाठक, प्रवषय की कलपना कर सके और लेिक के अनुिव को
सर्झ सके।

❖ कर्ात्‍
र्क: इस प्रकार के गद्ाांश घटनाओां की श्ृि
ां ला से सांबांनित होते हैं जो या तो
वास्‍तप्रवक या काल‍पननक या कालानुिनर्क रूप से व्यवखस्र्त सूचनाओां से सांबांनित होते हैं ,
जो पाठकों को एक योजना की सहायता से प्रिान की जाती हैं ।
❖ प्रववरणात्र्क या व्याख्यात्र्क: ऐसे गद्ाांश व्यप्रित्व, घटनाओां, प्रवचारों या
अविारणाओां की व्याख्या करने पर आिाररत होते हैं । इनर्ें सूचना के बजाय व्‍याख्‍या पर
अनिक ध्‍यान केंकित रहता है ।
❖ प्रेरक: इस प्रकार के गद्ाांश र्ें, एक दृप्रिकोण प्रस्तुत ककया जाता है और लेिक, एक
पाठक को सर्झाने का प्रयास करता है कक उसके द्वारा पेश ककया गया अनिकर्न या िावा
सही है ।
❖ ताककथक: इस प्रकार के गद्ाांश र्ें ककसी र्ुद्दे के िोनों पक्षों पर तकथ शानर्ल होते हैं । यह
हो सकता है कक िोनों पक्षों को सर्ान रूप से सांतुलन र्ें प्रस्तुत ककया जाए या यह हो सकता
है कक एक पक्ष को िस
ू रे पक्ष की तुलना र्ें अनिक बलपूवक
थ प्रस्तुत ककया जाए।

परीक्षा र्ें पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्नों की प्रकृ नत

हर् ननम्ननलखित श्ेखणयों र्ें परीक्षा र्ें पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्नों को वगीकृ त कर सकते हैं ।
❖ र्ुख्य प्रवषय या केंिीय प्रवचार पर आिाररत प्रश्न, इस प्रकार के प्रश्न पूणथ रूप से गद्ाांश
पर आिाररत होते हैं , ये प्रश्‍न परीक्षण करते हैं कक पाठक, गद्ाांश को सर्झने र्ें ककस हि तक
सक्षर् है । इस प्रकार के प्रश्नों के उत्तर स्‍वयां टे क्‍सट से ही आसानी से नर्ल सकते हैं ।
❖ लेिक की राय या दृप्रिकोण पर आिाररत प्रश्न, ऐसे प्रश्न लेिक के दृप्रिकोण पर
आिाररत होते हैं और इनके उत्तर स्पि रूप से उखललखित नहीां होते हैं । प्रश्‍नों के उत्‍तर लेिक
द्वारा अपने प्रवचारों को व्यि करने के नलए उपयोग ककए जाने वाले प्रर्ुि वाक्यों से ननकालने
चाकहए।
❖ स्पि या प्रत्यक्ष जानकारी पर आिाररत प्रश्न, ये प्रत्‍यक्ष प्रश्‍न नार्, किनाांक, आकृ नत,
डे टा, तथ्यों या गद्ाांश र्ें उखललखित राय पर आिाररत होते हैं । कुछ प्रवनशि प्रववरणों वाले
प्रश्न नकारात्र्क होते हैं और उनके उत्तर प्रवलोपन प्रवनि द्वारा प्राप्‍त ककए जाते हैं । सुस्पि
जानकारी पर आिाररत प्रश्नों को गद्ाांश के प्रवनशि िागों को पढ़कर सत्याप्रपत ककया जाना
चाकहए, खजनर्ें उत्तर शानर्ल होता है ।

न, इन प्रश्‍
नों का उत्‍तर िे ने के नलए स्‍पष्‍

चाकहए।
❖ िाषा अनिव्यप्रियों पर आिाररत प्रश्न, ये प्रश्न गद्ाांश र्ें उखललखित प्रवनशि शब्िों या
वाक्याांशों पर आिाररत होते हैं । किी-किी ये पयाथयवाची या प्रवलोर् पर आिाररत होते हैं जो
गद्ाांश के सांििथ र्ें एक शब्ि की सर्झ का परीक्षण करते हैं ।
❖ गद्ाांश के ढाांचे पर आिाररत प्रश्न, ये प्रश्न गद्ाांश की सांरचना और लेिक द्वारा अपने
तकों को व्यि करने र्ें प्रयुि साकहखत्यक तकनीकों पर आिाररत होते हैं ।
❖ सृिश तकथ पर आिाररत प्रश्न, ये प्रश्न एक उम्र्ीिवार की सर्झ और गद्ाांश को पढ़ने
के बाि हर्ारे किर्ाग र्ें बने प्रवश्लेषण को स्पि करने की क्षर्ता का परीक्षण करते हैं ।
एक उम्र्ीिवार को उस प्रवकलप को चुनने की आवश्यकता होती है जो सर्ान है या गद्ाांश र्ें
उखललखित तकथ के रूप र्ें सर्ान पांप्रियों के सार् तकथ की पुप्रि करता है । इस प्रकार के प्रश्‍नों
का उत्‍तर िे ने के नलए आिार तकथ को सर्झना चाकहए और प्रवकलपों का अवलोकन करना
चाकहए और किर प्रश्‍न र्ें किए गए तकथ के अनुसार प्रवकल‍पों को प्रवलोप्रपत करना चाकहए।
❖ कर्नों पर आिाररत प्रश्न, इस प्रकार के प्रश्नों र्ें िो या तीन कर्न किए जाते हैं और
एक उम्र्ीिवार को उत्तर िे ना होता है कक कौन सा/ से कर्न सत्य है / हैं ।
❖ अनुर्ान पर आिाररत प्रश्न, इस प्रकार के प्रश्न लेिक के किए गए प्रवचार या राय पर
आिाररत होते हैं । इन प्रश्‍नों के उत्‍तरों का अनुर्ान इस प्रकार लगाया जाना चाकहए कक लेिक
ककसी प्रवशेष अांश र्ें ककसी की प्रशांसा या आलोचना कर रहा है ।

प्रवनिन्न प्रश्नों के उत्तर िे ने का सही दृप्रिकोण

❖ गद्ाांश के र्ुख्य प्रवषय को सर्झने के नलए पहले एक या िो बार गद्ाांश को पढ़ें ।

❖ गद्ाांश के र्ुख्य या प्रर्ुि वाक्यों को रे िाांककत करें ।
❖ शब्िावली या अांग्रेजी व्याकरण, र्ुहावरों आकि से सांबांनित शब्िों को रे िाांककत करें ।
❖ किए गए गद्ाांश के सांिाप्रवत शीषथक पर ध्यान िें । इस प्रकार के प्रश्‍नों के उत्‍तर,
गद्ाांश के र्ुख्य प्रवषय या केंिीय प्रवचार को पढ़ने और सर्झने के बाि ही िे ने चाकहए।
❖ प्रश्नों को पूरी तरह से पढ़ें , यह सर्झने की कोनशश करें कक प्रश्न र्ें क्या पूछा गया है
और तिनुसार उत्तर िें ।

❖ उत्तर का किए गए प्रश्न के सार् तालर्ेल होना चाकहए।

❖ प्रश्नों की शब्ि सीर्ा, प्रत्येक प्रश्न के नलए आवांकटत अांकों के अनुसार होनी चाकहए।

यहाुँ कुछ तकनीकों का उपयोग ककया जा सकता है , जो गद्ाांश को आसान बना सकती हैं :
1. प्रर्ुि प्रवचारों की पहचान करना: हर्ेशा कुछ र्हत्वपूणथ वाक्य होते हैं जो गद्ाांश र्ें
प्रवचारों के प्रवाह को ननिाथररत करते हैं । गद्ाांश को सरल बनाने के नलए इन वाक्यों की पहचान
पहली बार पढ़ने के िौरान की जानी चाकहए। एक सार्ान्यीकृ त प्रवचार प्राप्त करने के नलए
गद्ाांश को जलिी से पढ़ना चाकहए। इसे किर से पढ़ा जाना चाकहए, प्रववरण जानने के नलए
र्ोडा िीरे से पढ़ें । प्रर्ुि प्रवचारों को िी रे िाांककत ककया जा सकता है ।
2. गद्ाांश को साराांनशत करें : गद्ाांश को पढ़ते सर्य, प्रत्येक पैराग्राि को र्ाननसक रूप
से साराांनशत करने की आित प्रवकनसत करें और आगे बढ़ने पर उन्हें जोडते रहें । यह गद्ाांश
के सर्ग्र प्रवचार को सर्झने र्ें र्िि करता है और पररणार्स्वरूप, उम्र्ीिवार को प्रश्नों के
उत्तर िे ने र्ें आसानी हो सकती है । कुछ पाठक पुन: प्रश्नों का अध्ययन करना पसांि कर सकते
हैं और बाि र्ें गद्ाांश के प्रासांनगक कहस्सों की ओर रूि कर सकते हैं ।
3. सांबांनित वाक्य ननिाथररत करें : सार्ान्‍यत:, एक गद्ाांश के िीतर वाक्य प्रत्‍
यक्ष या
आसानी से जुडे होते हैं । यहाां ऐसे सांबांनित वाक्‍यों की पहचान करने र्ें अभ्‍यास से कािी र्िि
नर्ल सकती है । हालाांकक, अभ्यास र्ें असिल होना सबसे र्हत्वपूणथ प्रबांिओ
ु ां को याि नहीां
करने के सर्ान होगा।

र्ुख्य प्रश्न श्ेखणयाां

सार्ान्‍यत:, इस प्रकार के प्रश्नों के उत्तर पररचयात्र्क या सर्ापन पैराग्राि र्ें होते हैं । पहले
और अांनतर् या िोनों पैराग्राि का पहले त्वररत पठन इसर्ें सहायक होता है ।

लेिक की राय और दृप्रिकोण

ऐसे प्रश्न लेिक के दृप्रिकोण पर आिाररत होते हैं और उत्तर स्पि रूप से उखललखित नहीां होते
हैं । उन्हें लेिक द्वारा अपने प्रवचारों और राय को व्यि करने के नलए उपयोग ककए जाने वाले
प्रर्ुि वाक्यों से ननकालना पडता है । यह प्रश्न इसनलए तैयार ककए गए हैं खजससे कक गद्ाांश
र्ें प्रयुि सार्ग्री, शैली और वाक्याांशप्रवज्ञान का प्रवश्लेषण करके प्रवषय पर लेिक के दृप्रिकोण
या उसके ज्ञान की जाांच करने की क्षर्ता का परीक्षण ककया जा सके। ऐसे प्रश्नों का उत्तर िे ते
सर्य उम्र्ीिवार को लेिक के सार् सहानुिूनत रिने की आवश्यकता होती है । इस तरह के
प्रश्नों का एक उम्र्ीिवार कई र्ोचों पर परीक्षण करता है ।

सर्ािान दृप्रिकोण
आप लेिन शैली और उन वाक्यों की तलाश कर सकते हैं जो लेिक द्वारा उपयोग ककए जाने
वाले स्वर को ननिाथररत करते हैं , जो उत्तर के नलए एक सुराग के रूप र्ें कार् करते हैं । यकि
गद्ाांश का एक प्रवशेष िाग प्रश्न के रूप र्ें है तो लेिक द्वारा उस िाग को सर्झाने के नलए
उपयोग ककए जाने वाले तकथ को सर्झने की कोनशश करते हैं ।
वैकखलपक रूप से, पाठक कुछ वणथन करने के नलए लेिक द्वारा प्रयुि किया-प्रवशेषणों और
प्रवशेषणों पर ध्यान केंकित कर सकता है । ये शब्ि उसके प्रवचारों की र्नोिशा और तीव्रता के

स्पि या प्रत्यक्ष जानकारी

ये गद्ाांश र्ें उखललखित नार्ों, तारीिों, आांकडों, डे टा, तथ्यों या राय पर आिाररत प्रत्यक्ष
प्रश्न हैं और पहली बार पढ़े जाने के िौरान आसानी से िे िे जा सकते हैं । उत्तर प्रवकलप िी
प्रत्यक्ष वाक्य हो सकते हैं , खजन्‍
हें गद्ाांश से चुना जाता है । प्रवनशि प्रववरणों के नलए प्रर्ुि

िों को पहचानने के नलए गद्ाांश को स्कैन करें ।
कुछ प्रवनशि प्रववरणात्‍र्क प्रश्न नकारात्र्क होते हैं और नहीां, को छोडकर, अनिकाांश और
न्‍
यूनतर् जैसे शब्िों द्वारा एकल होते हैं । यकि आपको नकारात्र्क-प्रवनशि प्रववरणों के नलए

ये प्रश्न हर्ारे सर्झ कौशल और लेिक की राय से सांबांनित हर्ारी क्षर्ता िोनों का परीक्षण
करते हैं ।

गद्ाांश के सर्ग्र प्रवचार को सर्झने से इन प्रश्‍नों का उत्‍तर िे ने र्ें र्िि नर्लती है । गद्ाांश
को पढ़ते सर्य, उम्र्ीिवार को लेिक द्वारा प्रस्तुत तकों को सर्झने की कोनशश करनी
चाकहए।

िाषा अनिव्यप्रि प्रश्न

ये प्रश्न गद्ाांश र्ें उखललखित प्रवनशि शब्िों या वाक्याांशों पर आिाररत होते हैं । हालाांकक, किी-
किी, पयाथयवाची या प्रवलोर् शब्‍
िों पर आिाररत प्रश्न हो सकते हैं , जो गद्ाांश के सांििथ र्ें शब्ि
के प्रनत हर्ारी सर्झ का परीक्षण करते हैं । पाठक का उद्दे श्य शब्िों के शब्िकोश अर्ों से
नचपके रहने के बजाय गद्ाांश के सापेक्ष शब्‍
िों के प्रासांनगक अर्ों को सर्झना होना चाकहए।
ये प्रश्न गद्ाांश र्ें प्रयोग िाषा और प्रवषय को सर्झने के नलए सरल, ज्ञात शब्िों और उनके
शाखब्िक अर्ों को स्र्ानाांतररत करने की हर्ारी क्षर्ता का परीक्षण करते हैं । वे हर्ारे तकथ
कौशल और गद्ाांश के िौरान लेिक के प्रवचारों से सांबांनित क्षर्ता का परीक्षण करते हैं ।

एक उम्र्ीिवार को उस प्रवकलप को चुनने की आवश्यकता होती है जो सर्ान है या गद्ाांश र्ें

Introduction and Meaning

Comprehension is the process of constructing the meaning of a given text. The comprehension
aims to test a candidate's ability to understand a subject, to infer the information, to interpret or
come to a conclusion, to evaluate and then answer the questions in a systematic manner.

Each question contains four options as answers. However, the questions are challenging and they
require an appreciation of more than just the superficial understanding of the passage. Therefore,
the candidate needs to concentrate on the questions and choose the correct option accordingly.

Importance of Comprehension from Examination Point of View

The following skills of a candidate are assessed through various questions under objective
comprehension in the correct perspective

❖ to understand the content of the given passage.

❖ ability to present ideas in a cohesive manner.
❖ to infer the implied message from the text.
❖ to judge or evaluate information.

Nature of Passages Asked in Examination

Generally, the following types of comprehension passages are asked in the examination

❖ Descriptive Such passages describe an event or journey etc in a very systematic manner.
So that the reader can visualise the topic and enter into the writer's experience.
❖ Narrative Such passages relate a series of events either real or imaginary or
chronologically arranged information is provided to the readers with the help of a plot.
❖ Explanatory or Interpretative Such passages are based on interpreting personalities,
events, ideas or concepts. The focus is on interpretation rather than information.
❖ Persuasive In such types of passages, a point of view is presented and the writer seeks to
persuade a reader that the assertion or claim put forth by him is correct.

❖ Argumentative Such passages contain arguments about both sides of an issue. It could be
that both sides are presented equally balanced or it could be that one side is presented more
forcefully than the other.

Nature of Questions Asked in Examination

We can classify the questions being asked in the examination into the following categories.

❖ Questions based on Main Theme or Central Idea These types of questions are based on
the passage as a whole; these questions test up to what extent the reader is able to
understand the paragraph. Answers to such types of questions can be easily found from the
text itself.
❖ Questions based on Author's Opinion or Attitude Such questions are based on the
author's viewpoint and the answers are not explicitly mentioned. They have to be derived
from the key sentences used by the author to express his thoughts.
❖ Questions based on Explicit or Direct Information These are direct questions based on
the names, dates, figures, data, facts or opinions mentioned in the passage. Questions with
some specific details are negative and their answers are to be found by the elimination
method. Questions on explicit information should be verified by reading specific parts of
the passage that contain the answer.
❖ Questions based on Implicit Information Answers to these questions are not clearly
stated but are to be inferred or deducted from the passage.
❖ Questions based on Language Expressions These questions are based on specific words
or phrases mentioned in the passage. Sometimes they are based on synonyms or antonyms
which test an understanding of a word in the context of the passage.
❖ Questions based on the Organisation of the Passage These questions are based on the
structure of the passage and the literary techniques used by the author in expressing his
arguments.
❖ Questions based on Analogous Argument These questions test a candidate's
comprehension and ability to illustrate the analysis formed in our mind after reading the
passage.
A candidate is required to choose the option that is similar or conforms to reasoning along
the same lines as the arguments mentioned in the passage. The key to answering such
questions is to understand the base argument having a look at the options and then eliminate
the options according to the reasoning provided in the question stem.

❖ Questions based on Statements In such types of questions two or three statements are
provided and a candidate has to answer which of the statement or statements are true.

❖ Questions based on Guess Such types of questions are based on the given views or
opinions of the author. These questions answers are to be guessed as such as why the author
is admiring or criticising someone in a particular part of the passage.

Right Approach to Answer Different Questions

❖ First read the passage once or twice to understand the main theme of the passage.
❖ Underline the main or key sentences of the passage.
❖ Underline the words related to vocabulary or english grammar, idioms etc.
❖ Pay attention to the probable title of the given passage. Answer of such questions should
be attempted only after reading and understanding the main theme or centrai idea of the
passage.
❖ Read the questions thoroughly try to understand what has been asked in the question and
answer accordingly.
❖ The answer should be in sync with the question given.
❖ The word limit of the questions should be according to marks allotted to each question.
❖ Summarise or go through all the answers carefully before proceeding to another part of the
question paper.

Solution Guidelines

Here are some techniques that can be used to make comprehension easier:

1. Identification of key ideas: There are always certain key sentences that determine the flow
of the ideas in a passage. To make comprehension simpler, these sentences are supposed
to be identified during the first reading of the passage. The paragraph(s) should be read
quickly to get a generalized idea. It should be read again, a little slowly, so as to know the
details. The key ideas can also be underlined.
2. Summarize the paragraph: While reading the passage, develop a habit of mentally
summarizing each paragraph and keep linking them as you proceed. This helps in
