Task – Apply critical thinking to work practices


This assessment task is due on the date specified in your ‘Training and Assessment Schedule’. Any requests
for extensions must be submitted in writing to your Trainer / Assessor prior to the due date and a new date
must be negotiated and approved.

Task - Performance Objective

For this task, you are to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to use advanced-level critical
thinking skills in the workplace context.

Task - Procedure

1. The role of critical thinking – Appendix 1 Part A


Complete the short answer questions regarding the use of critical thinking in your workplace.
2. Lead critical thinking processes – Appendix 1 Part B
Using the proposed workplace scenario in the Appendix work in groups of 3 to apply critical thinking
skills to identify possible solutions to the scenario.
Photograph your brainstorming / butchers’ paper notes to Moodle as additional evidence.
Record (in writing) and present to your group members your ideas of possible solutions and justify
your decisions (3-4 mins).
Seek feedback from your team members regarding your critical thinking processes and record it in the
table provided.
Individually complete the proposal (using the template provided) to propose your preferred solution
to the workplace issue. Your preferred solution does not have to be the same as anyone else’s – this is
your proposed solution and justification.
3. Lead critical thinking processes in the workplace – Appendix 1 Part C and Appendix 2
Use a minimum of two (2) critical thinking tools / techniques to conduct a critical thinking review of a
current workplace practice to complete the questions in this section. Use Appendix 2 to assist with
your brainstorming and analysis.
Uploaded to Moodle as additional evidence for this task.
4. Develop critical thinking mindset – Appendix 1 Part D
Complete the short answer questions in this section, including your self-reflection relating to your use
of critical thinking in the workplace and how this could be improved.
Following the analysis in questions 1 and 2 above, develop a plan to more effectively evaluate
workplace processes in the future.
5. Knowledge Questions – Appendix 1 Part E
Complete the short answer questions in this section.

● Completed Appendix 1 Part A – The role of critical thinking (short answers)


● Completed Appendix 1 Part B – Lead critical thinking processes with a record of your critical
proposed solutions, feedback following your small group presentation and your individually
completed proposal.
● Photograph your group brainstorming posters and upload them to Moodle.
● Completed Appendix 1 Part C – Lead critical thinking processes in the workplace with details of your
critical thinking against a current workplace practice.
● Appendix 2 – your brainstorming notes using a minimum of two (2) critical thinking tools /
techniques as part of Appendix 1 Part C to be uploaded.
● Completed Appendix 1 Part D – Develop critical thinking mindset with your self-reflection and plan
for the future
● Completed Appendix 1 Part E – Knowledge Questions

Your Trainer / Assessor will be looking for evidence that you can:
• develop solutions for two different workplace limitations using critical thinking concepts.
In the course of the above the candidate must:
• use a range of critical thinking techniques to identify and address limitations in workplace practices
• ask questions to broaden understanding of task requirements
• use various information sources to provide answers to proposed questions
• develop a proposal to articulate to a broad range of workplace stakeholders a solution to an
identified issue
• incorporate feedback and self-reflection to critically assess performance.

Your Trainer / Assessor must also see evidence that you have knowledge of:
• critical thinking concepts and the value of applying such approaches in a work environment
• key characteristics of critical thinking processes
• sources of reliable information relevant to workplace practices
• key components of decision- making frameworks
• features and limitations of workplace practices
• legislative requirements relating to workplace practices
• components of self-evaluation and development.

Recording Evidence of Assessment

You must upload into Moodle (as per the submission guide) your evidence as specified in the Task
Procedure and Specifications above. Your Trainer / Assessor will review your submission and provide you
with either a ‘Satisfactory’, ‘Not Satisfactory’ or ‘Further Evidence Required’ grade.

If you receive a ‘Further Evidence Required’ grade, the Trainer / Assessor will provide you with detailed
feedback as to what additional evidence needs to be submitted in order to finalise your assessment. You
can contact your Trainer / Assessor at any time throughout the assessment process, should you have any
issues or concerns.
