Work Group or Work Team?

Part 1: Work Group

All throughout my high school journey, I used to join and participate in different

organizations not just because I am aiming for extracurricular activities, but solely

because I enjoy working and mingling with other people regardless of what grade level

they are in. In relation to the work group lesson, I will share how I participated in an

organization in our school. I was a former president of the Supreme Student

Government of our school.

Considering that I have the highest position, I am obliged to do the

responsibilities of a leader. Since I dominate and take control of the group, I share every

information I have within my members in order for us to achieve our goals for the

school. I created platforms that we are going to implement in the school. All the details

are shared among the members and I conducted several meetings as to how we are

going to take actions regarding the plans we have for the school.

However, it is not denying that some of the meetings conducted had created a

negative synergy in our organization. There were times that since all my members are

knowledgeable enough and are competent, we sometimes clash our ideas during

meetings because we would gather, exchange irrational concepts and eventually, we

would realize that having the meeting was a bad decision. Meanwhile, when it comes to

having events in school, in which all of our participation and service are needed, I, as

the leader, monitor each of my members in order to know who is working or not. By the

end of the event, I will commend my group as a whole for doing a successful job at the

event. However, I will talk individually to my members whom I found lacking at a certain

aspect during the event. Through that, my member becomes aware of how she

performed and worked at the event and will take accountability for his/her actions, and

will realize how he/she can improve himself/herself.

Lastly, since we are in an organization, there are positions needed to be

occupied. I assessed my members according to their skills to know which position in the

organization fits them. I appointed them to their positions according to their capabilities

that will help in operating the organization. By this, all the positions are aligned with the

requirements and qualifications needed. For the whole year, we were able to have a

successful organization that was commended and acknowledged several times for

doing activities efficiently and effectively that contributed to the betterment of the school.

Part 2: Work Team

Talking about being in a work team environment, I used to be a leader in a team

of five whenever I was competing for Quiz Beez. I remember frequently reviewing and

preparing with my team members for an upcoming competition. Since all of us are

involved and are contributing, as a leader I had to make sure that everyone is

participating and is consistent in giving correct answers to the questions thrown at us.

Since we share the common purpose of winning the competition, we usually have a

positive synergy as we always put our brains together in order to provide the correct

answer to every question. Whenever we don't get an answer right, no one blames

another since we are a team and that the answer of one is the answer of everyone else.

That’s why we take accountability to every decision we make, either it’s right or wrong.

Most importantly, since we’re competing for a Quiz Bee in Mathematics, we

acquired the same skills of being good at it. Before we became a team, there were

series of elimination rounds in order to know who qualifies the best to make up a team.

If I didn’t have the same skills with my members, I wouldn’t be able to join and

participate in the first place. That is why these characteristics are very important in a

work team as the output you desire as one is at stake. So, as the leader, I had to make

sure that we would come up with the best choice or decision we can have as a team for

us to achieve the goal that we aim before entering the competition.

Fortunately, all the hard works were paid off and because of my leadership and

my member’s utmost participation and dedication in making the team win, we

successfully hailed champions in that Mathematics Quiz Bee competition.
