TITLE: Factors And Effect Of Smoking And Liquor Addiction On The Senior

High Students At Burgos Agro-Industrial School

II. INTRODUCTION

One of the most common issues among the senior high students of Burgos Agro-

Industrial School (BAIS) is cigarette smoking and liquor addiction, which have both negative

impacts on their health and academic performance in school. This issue has been a nuisance

ever since traditional face-to-face classes were still evident. However, this issue seemed to

worsen when the pandemic started. Since school has been closed and the new learning set-up

was implemented (Modular learning, Online learning), most students have focused on their

vices and totally neglected their academic responsibilities. As a result, many students were

not attending their online classes, not answering their modules, and couldn’t pass their

requirements on time due to this behavior. Studies have found that people who smoke are

much more likely to drink, and people who drink are much more likely to smoke. Alcohol

and tobacco use may lead to major health risks when used alone and together. In addition to

contributing to traumatic death and injury (e.g., through car crashes), alcohol is associated

with chronic liver disease, cancers, cardiovascular disease, acute alcohol poisoning (i.e.,

alcohol toxicity), and fetal alcohol syndrome. Smoking on the other hand, is associated with

lung disease, cancers, and cardiovascular disease.

Additionally, a growing body of evidence suggests that these substances might be

especially dangerous when they are used together, when combined, alcohol and tobacco

dramatically increase the risk of certain cancers (NIAA). Hence, we conducted this study to

further understand why certain students engage themselves in smoking and alcoholism. And

to raise awareness for students to prevent this addiction for the betterment of themselves. We

can’t stop addiction, but surely we can prevent it.

III. PURPOSE

This study aimed to determine the factors and effects of smoking and liquor addiction

on the senior high school students at Burgos Agro-Industrial School (BAIS). Furthermore, to

educate and raise awareness about its negative effects on their health. Also to motivate and

influence them to quit this habit because it won’t cause them anything positive in the long

run.

IV. DESCRIPTION

Most people are aware that smoking and heavy drinking are unhealthy habits, but not

many realize just how much harm they can cause. According to our observation, about 30%

of the senior high school students in BAIS have already smoked cigarettes and drunk alcohol.

They knew that this would not benefit them in any way, but they still engaged themselves in

these vices for personal reasons. Recent studies have identified a range of factors that

influence uptake and patterns of smoking and alcoholism among students, and some of the

most common factors are peer pressure, family problems, and stress. It seems like students

have made smoking and alcoholism a coping mechanism for their personal problems. If this

unhealthy habit still continues, it could later lead to addiction. Addiction to smoking and

alcoholism will only result in numerous health risks, and this will also affect their academic

performance in school.

Therefore, for us to help reduce and prevent smoking and alcohol addiction among

our fellow students, we plan on conducting advocacy campaigns in school about the factors

and negative effects of smoking on one’s health and school performance. We will also paste

some infographic posters in school regarding this issue. Through this, we will be able to

provide them with knowledge on this matter and be able to influence and motivate our fellow
students who are currently and still planning to engage in these unhealthy habits. We can’t

stop addiction, but surely we can prevent it.
