ASSIGNMENT No. 1

DYNAMIC COMPACTION

NAME: PEREZ, QUEENIE DIMAGAN

STUDENT ID NO.: 20216050428

Problem:

The project area consists of a layer of waste dump with a medium density. The thickness of
the soil is to be repaired (D) is about 6m in Area A, and (D) is 3.50 m in Area B. The tamper
weight (W) is 14 tons and a diameter of 1.6m. Planned after dynamic compaction on the
surface soil will be done with compaction machine. Plan a dynamic compaction program in
these areas!

Answer:
For H, from the previous example wherein W = 20 tons and H = 16.5 m. By ratio and
proportion,
20 14
16.5
= H
; H = 11.55 m
For S, S = 1.5d ; S = 1.5 (1.6m) : S = 2.4 ≈ 3
@Area A
E= 6 x 250 kJ/m3 = 1500/9.81 = 152.91 tons.m/m 2
AE = 1m x 250 kJ.m3 = 250/9.81 = 25.5 tons.m/m2
AE = 152.91 – 25.5 = 127.41 tons.m/m2
N xW xH xP N (14 x 11.55 x 1)
AE = S
2 ; 127.41 = 3
2 ; N = 7.09
@Area B
E= 3.5 x 250 kJ/m3 = 875/9.81 = 89.19 tons.m/m2
AE = 1m x 250 kJ.m3 = 250/9.81 = 25.5 tons.m/m2
AE = 89.19– 25.5 = 63.69 tons.m/m 2
N xW xH xP N (14 x 11.55 x 1)
AE = S2
; 63.69 = 32
; N = 3.54

So the number of drops at each specific point location (N) is 8 blows for Area A and 4 blows
for Area B per compaction point, with a distance of compaction point (s) is 3m.
