MATHEMATICS 10

Subject Teacher: CAROLINE AFANTE CAYABYAB Date: February 11 2022

I. Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

Illustrates the center-radius form of the equation of a circle. (M10GE-IIh-1)
Determines the center and radius of a circle given its equation and vice versa. (M10GE-IIh-2)

Specific Learning Objectives:

1. Write the equation of a circle in standard form (center-radius form) and general form.
2. Determine the center and radius of a circle given the equation.

II. Content
Domain: PLANE COORDINATE GEOMETRY
Topic: The Equation of a Circle
Lesson: Writing Equation of a Circle and Determining the Center and Radius of a Circle

III. Learning Resources

the Center and Radius of a Circle

IV. Procedure
A. Introductory Activity
 Preparation
 Prayer
 Checking of Attendance
 Reading of Class Rules
 Motivation
Show pictures of a map, telecommunication towers, communities affected by certain
natural calamities such as earthquake and volcanic eruptions.

Page | 1
The Teacher says:
Look at the pictures on screen. Are these familiar? Was there any instance when
someone asked you about the location of a place or a landmark? Were you able to give
the right direction and how far it is? Have you ever wondered how your cellular calls
are transmitted? What about the effects of certain natural calamities such as
earthquakes and volcanic eruptions? How do you know that your location is within the
critical area? Is it a good decision to moved out when these happens?
These are some but few of the real-life applications of the equation of circles. As
you go through the lesson, think of this important question: “How does the equation of a
circle facilitate finding solutions to real-life problems and making decisions?”

B. Activity/Strategy
 Warm-Up Activity
The teacher will make a recall on the essential mathematics concepts needed by the
students in understanding the equation of a circle.

1. Simplify
a. √ 16
b. √ 20
c. √ 22
2. Make it Perfect
Find the missing value to complete the square then express each as a square of a
binomial.
d. x 2+ 14 x +¿ ¿ _________
2
e. x −2 x +¿ ¿ _________

 Unlocking of difficulties
 CIRCLE - is the set of all points, (x, y), on a plane having the same distance from a
fixed point called the center of a circle.
 RADIUS -the distance between the center of the circle and any point on the circle.
 DISTANCE FORMULA – an equation that can be used to find the distance between
any pair of points on the coordinate plane. If (x, y) is any point on the circle with
center (h, k) and radius r, then r is the distance from (h, k) to (x, y). The distance
formula is
r =√ ¿ ¿
 Presentation
The teacher…
1. introduces the topic which is the equation of a circle.
2. presents the two different forms of the equation of a circle and show its graph on
the coordinate plane.
3. discusses how to write the equation of circles both in standard and general form
by illustrating it with examples.
4. discusses how to determine the center and radius of a circle given its equation
then illustrate it with examples.

C. Analysis
The teacher gives the students opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of the equation of
a circle by performing an individual activity then asking them the questions that follow.

Page | 2
1. Write the equation of the circle given its center (2, -8) and radius of 9 units in both
standard and general form.
2. Determine the center and radius of the circle, given its equation:
2 2
x −4 x+ y −6 y +9=0
Questions:
a. How did you write the equation of the circle? What two parts are needed to
be able to write its equation?
b. How did you determine the center of the circle? How about its radius?

D. Abstraction
The teacher asks the students to complete the statements below to find out how well they
understood the lesson.

Complete the statements below:

I have learned that …
1) when the center of a circle is at the origin, the equation to be used is ___________ .
2) when the center of a circle is at any other point (ℎ, 𝑘), the equation to be used is
.___________________
3) a circle can also be represented in its general form which is written
as________________
4) for a circle to exist, radius is __________and coefficients of 𝑥2 and 𝑦2 should not be
equal to __________ .
5) given the coordinates of the center and any other point on the circle, the length of the
radius can be computed by using the ______________ .
6) to write the equation of a circle, the two necessary parts must be obtained:
(a)____________ and (b) ____________.

E. Application
The teacher provides the students with opportunities to think deeply and test further their
understanding of the equation of a circle by solving a problem on the real-life applications of the
equation of a circle then relate it to the current situation they are in.

The Provincial Disaster and Risk Reduction Management Committee (PDRRMC) advised the
residents living within the 10km radius critical area to evacuate due to eminent eruption of a
volcano. On the map that is drawn on a coordinate plane, the coordinates corresponding to the
location of the volcano is (3, 4)
a.) If each unit on the coordinate plane is equivalent to 1km, what is the equation of the circle
enclosing the critical area?
b.) Suppose you live at point (11,6). Would you follow the advice of PDRRMC? Why?
c.) In times of eminent disaster, what precautionary measures should you take to be safe?

 VALUE FOCUS
 Social Responsibility-Tolerance, Concern, Care, Respect & Responsibility
